I rewatch this periodically to frame my thinking for rock slope engineering.
I can't think of what the products are of the ball-milling strategy and how it works (is F2 created) ? How this creates a chemical change is beyond me unless temperatures are also increased or some sort of catalyst present.
Hi Rob - The energy resulting from the impact of the ball milling media with the soil allows for the cleavage of the C-F bond. Fluoride was recovered using a fluoride ion selective electrode providing evidence that defluorination is occurring. This publication provides more details if you are interested: www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0048969720362513 This technology has also been recently endorsed by the USEPA as one of the most promising technologies for the destruction of PFAS in soil. Hope this answers your question and thanks for checking this.
@@stefanomarconetto1133Thanks Stefano for this clarification and prompt response. Quite nice to get such a prompt response! Unfortunately I don't have access to the full paper but believe you that this technology is endorsed - 98% remediation is truly amazing but still have some questions. I might be able to get a copy online elsewhere as I am interested in the particulars. Since F2 is toxic I am assuming that F2 is absorbed by the fluoride ion selective electrode but can't remember my electrochemistry if you would have to apply a voltage and the efficiency of it for mopping up a truck containing seems large. I guess you have to scale up the electrode? Sorry, I am a civil engineer but my chemistry degree is a few years older.
