Is the teaching of the writing system the only reason why you wouldn't recommend Rocket for Russian? I have started learning Russian with Rocket. The fact that they use latin letters for Russian words is very bad. But I guess this will change in a more advanced level. It's actually very easy to learn the cyrillic alphabet. I learned it within a few days by RUclips tutorials. So I think the writing system shouldn't be a reason not to choose Rocket Russian.

I did about an hour a day of Duolingo for 6 months and a lot of supplementing my learning with Spanish verb workbooks, reading short stories, and RUclips videos geared towards speaking. I was really able to communicate a slew of wants and needs in Spanish in a city where very little English is spoken. I can also have a decent amount of varying small conversations. I like Duolingo but ultimately you need to do a lot more than just rely on the app. Additionally my listening comprehension was bad, but my wife typically has a decent ear for Spanish and she struggled in this new region of Mexico we went to. Gonna have to really ramp up my listening intake via podcasts and programs. I do feel that Duolingo helped with some listening to Spanish speakers when at the store in the US for example, but in Mexico I barely got anything! 😂

While I agree with your accessment on Super Chinese, it is much better than Hello Chinese thus should get better rating then HelloChinese. I have used both and dialogs in Super Chinese are much more meaningful and useful, pronounciation lesson makes your practice and not act as pasive learning so as while using Hello Chinese.

The Castilian Spanish course is a bit poor. There appears to be no quality control over production, because its native Spanish speakers, most particularly the male one, has a habit of poor pronunciation and slurring words together, making many totally unintelligible. On a few occasions I noticed the wrong tense of word being spoken, possible due to lazy editing by the audio engineer. The audio on the mp3 files is a bit woolly too, as are the French and German ones (and probably the rest too), and contain many transient clicks that can hurt the ears. I had to load all the files into an order editor to raise the treble content for better clarity and remove the transients before saving them at a bit-rate of 160kbps, which is far more sensible than the over-the-top 320kbps that Pimsleur supplies them at. Alas, considering it's supposedly one of the market leaders, there's an overwhelmingly strong sense of amateurism about Pimsleur's product.

You forgot to mention that Rocket doesn’t use native speakers throughout. Who wants to hear another English speaker with our lazy vowels trying to speak another language? Not me. The voice recognition can still give you 100% even for really bad pronunciation so it’s not very useful. You also used the Spanish flag, but there’s no Castilian Spanish available. The Spanish course is the South American Spanish of Chile, where there’s no vosotros or ceceo.

Been using Memrise for European Portuguese. The App says, "nos" means "us" and not "we." Also "maravilhoso" means "wonderful" and not "marvelous." It drives me crazy. The versiou I have is so very rudimentary.

I am doing Memrise in European Spanish at the moment. I love the videos of real people and I especially love the up-to-date language used. What other course would teach you "mierda" in the very beginning? Or "tienes condones"? (Do you have condoms?). I am not really learning Spanish since I reached a fairly high level having lived in Mexico for several years and having majored in Spanish at university, but I am doing European Spanish to see how it is different from Mexican Spanish, which is probably the most taught variety of the language. And I am really enjoying it and actually learning some new words that are quite common in Spain and not in Mexico. What I would definitely not recommend is Duolingo. It is basically a translation course and even with that premise it does a poor job. Up-to-date vocabulary and phrases, used by native speakers, do not exist in the Duolingo world. "Your insects are on my plate" is not something you would ever say in Italy. Or "my snake eats your cakes", "the butterflies in the zoo are his", and "I am a butterfly." The list goes on. One thing I also noticed is that mistakes on Duolingo are never corrected. You can read the comments and see how five years ago a mistake was pointed out and it is still there.

Having been through most of Pimsleur Spanish, I think your review is very accurate. I like using the "Quick Match" as a way to review by ignoring the multiple choice and trying to translate the phrases, it becomes a review of most of the major the phrases in a lesson. Although as you said, it would be nice to have a complete transcript.

Nice reviews. I always feel like I have to defend Duolingo a bit for motivated learners. So, first it does have grammar tutorials both on the web and app (the bulb icon after you click on a skill). But their focus is to teach inductive grammar (as in indirect and intuitive learning) instead of explicit grammar rules. It does offer progression and does a great job teaching you how to structure sentences. Also, they teach you vocabilary many times without you noticing first. Then they ask you directly just to make sure. The cons are: unpopular courses are forgotten by the staff and rarely updated; it lacks speaking activities and dialogues. However, their Spanish, French and English (for Portuguese speakers) are really well done. They've added dialogues, reading and listening exercises.
