Thank you for the video. Good job on your race. Really nice to see the course on Thursday compared to when I raced it on Sunday although this is under my friends account.
Thanks for watching and for your comment. I lost track of the weather after I left. How was the course on Sunday?
My biggest repect to all of you! I'm just 62, from Germany and I love Cyclocross in a very deep way.Good luck at all your ways, looking forward, we have good days in front of us : )
Thanks for watching and your kind comment!
My opinion: Use tubes for road bikes and tubeless for MTB. I'm riding a 29+ MTB... Tires are hard enough to find let alone inner tubes. No clue where people get those orange Tubolinos from.
Agreed the wider the tire, the more appropriate tubeless is. but now that so many road tires are getting wider, tubeless is more of an option. TPU tubes like Tubolino are easily gotten, especially from AliExpress where the prices are about a third of what you are likely to find on Amazon or local bike shops.
I agree with your assessment of the course and conditions, Congratulations you had a nice race .. Well done

Mike- stumbled onto this video yesterday. I can see that you were in my nrighborhood. I had the event in my calendar but it ended up conficting with the USA Long Course National Triathlon Championships in Daytona FL. Within the national and world multisport community we find it very challenging to find videos with the intricate description and depth as your video that serves as an inspiration..The video provided a unique perspective on the cyclocross course and narrative for master competitors committed to compete at a very high level. Keep up the good work. Lets connect. Peter Hackbert National Aquabike Champion 75-79.

@ I used Specialized Crux with knobby tubeless tires. Any gravel bike would work fine.
Great video that displays the ethos of the master competitive cyclists.
Thanks for watching and for your comment. Yes cyclocross definitely tough no matter what your age. I love competing with these guys. All of us do our best, but completely respectful of each other.
Thanks and ...thanks! What more to say! Hope to see you at an event soon!
Great video and effort! The important thing is... you were there!!
Yes! 11 hour drive for 40 minutes of “fun”😂
Very nice video - thanks for posting. As a longtime cyclist (raced a little in the 80's), I might have to try one of these someday. I have a cross bike and have been known to hang around/ride with a few cyclocross miscreants here in NC, so I have no real excuse not to!
Thanks for watching and commenting! Yes, give it a try. It’s very hard but very rewarding and as far as bike racing goes, it’s relatively safe.
Well done on the video and your race. Cool you had your son in support - did he race too? I am all too familiar with getting passed by Derek Bateson somewhere on lap 2 and seeing him agonizingly inch away in the distance. Great to see him and fellow NCCX racer Alan Lesage at nationals.
@@neilashton9459 Thank you for watching and commenting! Yes, my son raced the following day in the extremely competitive 35-39 group. He just turned cat three so it was his goal simply not to be last, which he did meet. No mud for him. The ground was frozen the next morning. Our bikes were close enough in size that we could use each other’s as a possible pit bike.
@mikem4814 my wife and I just watched your video!! We really enjoyed it as it is a great document of the difficulty of the mud in our race. Crazy to think that the sunshine would make 32° F (0° C) dirt into mud so treacherous !! Absolutely agree (with your Strava comment) " ... old men running around in the worst conditions... "Amazing that right after the race age is briefly lifted and all of us enjoy the excitement/joy/enthusiasm of an 8 year old!!!
If any sport will keep you young it’s this one!!
I raced against Joe Saling in the 80's he & his wife Dot. Champions then🎉
EVERYONE has raced with Joe. He’s been all over the place.
Yes, that was a bit of a surprise. He wasn’t even in the first row at the start. I wish I could’ve seen what was going on up front. It must’ve been quite a battle.
Nice effort Mike. Tough conditions. I got the story straight on the New England guys, but Smith was a shocker. His results hadn't been anything special this year. Pan Ams were against nobody. But he was champion in 2018 . . . Guys a stud I guess. Come up to New England some year, do Noho. Have a great winter!
Louisville again hosted, but made the course much more difficult compared to last year's easy course that favored power over skill. After a warm and almost bone-dry season in the northeast, the cold, mud and ever-changing conditions were a shock. No way did I keep up with the top guys, but you can sort of follow them through the announcer's play-by-play at end of each lap. At the end of the video there is some talk among the leaders about what happened during the race. The end of each lap: 16:00, 20:47, 25:00.
Wow, that was so cool to watch! Thank you for sharing your video!
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for commenting!
Rewatching this day before nats 2024 (injured at home). Imagine being in this age-group and having to race against Frank, George, Dave Goodwin and Paul Curley ( two riders who usually beat Frank) every weekend? Welcome to New England CX! If you're racing this year, goid luck, have a great race.
I don’t have to imagine it. I’m doing it tomorrow! Course is way more technical than in 2023. Greasy, hilly turns, and will be around 32 degrees race time. If I stay upright for the whole race, it’ll be a victory!
@mikem4814 Mike, follow Goodwin. He has been superb since the end of Oct. He starts slow, so if you find yourself with him don't be nervous about losing contact with anybody up front. David is a good as anybody technically, smooth beyond description and closes (last 2 laps) as well as anybody. Frank's been racing down south a lot last month and the results don't lie, has coming on strong. And Curley is Curley so don't let it come down to a sprint, he's the master. Again, goid luck, have a great race (hope you film/post it).
@@isitrachelorj3953great info, thanks! Who is this? I am Mike Maclaga
@@mikem4814 names Jay McDonald, 25 plus years racing cross, off and on (60-64 now) sprained knee at Really Rad (right behind Goodwin). I like Frank and wouldn't bet against him (you're correct, he is a great guy) but I'm hoping this is David's year. Been friends since we started racing for ncc back in 2000ish. Like I said, David (if you don't know him, look for the long ponytail, yellow helmet) is technically superb, few mistakes, and consistent lap after lap, so if you're feeling good he is a great wheel to follow. Curley will start fast, Frank will probably try to go with him, within reason (Remember last year when Frank sat up not wanting to risk everything to early). Can't help you with Fetherston, don't know him. Good luck!
@@isitrachelorj3953Jay, thanks SO much!
Another tip no one mention is that the rotor can bend first before the caliper is moving. If you tighten the bolts fast in that condition the rotor will not be centered after releasing the brake. Also the bolts can move in the holes of the frame taken the caliper with it as it has to. After that the bolts should not be moving anymore but if you tighten it further down to quickly they will move a bit bending the rotor. Tighten the bolts gradually and gently.
Thanks, that’s some good stuff!
Doesn t matter your place. You are doing something that's really hard. Keep at it. I miss it so much...
I do appreciate those kind words! Yes, I am competitive, but at the same time, I am very grateful to be able to do this. My racing age for CX is 71.
I glide way to much. Note for future races. Pedal pedal.
That mechanical(chain jumped off) really hurt.
Race videos can be very illuminating. I’m always amazed that what I thought I remembered wasn’t quite that way.
after trying all kinds of methods, i eventually just ended with eyeballing the caliper position and gradually tightening the screws.
Yes, i’m thinking that if each piston doesn’t retract the same amount, the caliber assembly won’t self-center. You can also insert something thin on one side of the brake pads before squeezing them down. Feeler gauge great for this.
@@mikem4814True, and I've seen that happen a number of times. If you're lucky, you extend the pistons, clean, oil them, and push them back. If that doesn't work, it's time to replace the caliper. There is a rubber bit inside the caliper that eventually gets old, so calipers last about 5-6 years and they're done for. In fact, I have a new caliper on order right now from eBay for that very reason. I replaced a caliper on my son's bike earlier this year as one piston wouldn't retract right. It seems like I'm always fixing and bleeding brakes. What was so bad about rim brakes on road bikes that we needed to move past them?
@@kurt1391Great info, thanks for your comment! I agree that disc brakes are a bit of a nuisance compared to rim brakes, but they are superior in terms of braking power and smoothness, (with disc brakes I almost never skid unexpectedly) so I’m willing to put up with the extra maintenance.
Nice FYI,a new comer to disc brakes! Thanks😊
You’re welcome!
Fair play this is a good shout those who have worked on bikes for a while will realise that this is a legit move to make ;)
Thank you for that thought!
Yes, it was awesome! If you competed that day, you can relive the course and maybe get some extra feedback. If you ever plan on riding this course, you'll certainly get an idea of what it was all about. This race took place in the morning. I'm wondering how the course held up during the rest of the day. Less traction? Any stories from anyone? Please comment. Thank you!
For years road riders poo hoo,d disks! Now they're giving wrong advice on them.😂
Grease! A sure way to contaminate the brakes when the heat generated from braking melts the grease and spreads it's way to the pads and rotor!😢
Yes, the rotors can get quite hot, but I doubt that this part of the brake assembly will ever get hot enough to affect the tiny amount of grease used here.
The heat can often melt the road and allow tar or asphalt to spread onto the pads and rotor. Concrete roads are fine though :-)
Only bike or can drive car too?
These roads are open to all vehicles; horses too!
In the video, I incorrectly show the Phenom Mirror. The Bucklos most resembles the Power Pro Mirror. Apologies for the error! Thanks to @maciuscrol for pointing this out.
Thanks for the weigh in! The weight spec on the bucklos saddle/website is indeed higher and I'm happy that the real saddle is under 200g 😊The Bucklos however is a rip off of the Power Mirror, not Phenom series. You easily can see it on the length of the saddle.
Thank you, that’s a major mistake on my part! I’ll make note of that in the description if I can, or at least pin a new comment noting that correction.
That was actually a very good tip. Thanks!
You’re very welcome. Hope it helps!
Not bad for a quickie advice. Will take it off next time. Some people say (very rarely!) that squeezing the brake might actually pull and bend the disk (temporarily), too. Thus it may not be the 100% solution 100% of the time
I had not heard this, but I was thinking in any case, spinning the wheel with a close eye on the disc will tell you how true it is
Whatt is the product?😊
It is Orange Seal. I am currently using Orange Seal Endurance. Not sure if it’s any easier to remove.
I'll try this! It makes sense.
Thanks for watching and for the comment!
The new Specialized H4, bahaha.
What adjustment did you make to level it? Just the leg screw adjustment?
Yes, the leveling bolts get you there.
@@mikem4814 So I can't get the side to be level both read .8 degree but middle was reading negative 1 and I got that level by removing bolt. Do you think it makes a difference as long both left and right is symmetrical but not level? Tha is for the replay!
@@suadmahmutovic6542I don’t know what you mean when you refer to “side” and “middle.” No matter what you are doing to make the frame plumb (a base with leveling hardware, or scraps of wood under the trainer), the final word is the plumb bob. If the string is the same distance from the down tube when hung from identical points on each side on the top tube, then the frame is perfectly vertical (plumb)
Peoples don't realise this can make small balls of dried sealant and make your tires looks like wavy when the wheel roll , this small balls disturb the right placement of the tire on the rim 😉
Great comment. Also, if tire goes unused for too long and stays in same position, sealant will dry up in one spot, causing a substantial imbalance. So ride your bike!!😀
I haven’t used it yet. I did supply a link to an actual review by Patrick Lino, hope that helps!
How does it feel and hold up at real world conditions?
I finally installed the saddle on my road bike, and it feels great. If it has no issues over time, then I would call this quite the bargain.
Good old pressure washer...
That’s a good idea… if you own one.
I run tubes and don’t have to do all that mess.

Looks like a solid solution. I've got 2 trees that need attention. Cheers
The sprint begins with three laps to go, you have to defend your position. Learn to read the race, watch during the race where does the pack typically have a pause. Don't waste your energy moving around if your not going to break away. Stay to the inside to give yourself a way to move up, it's hard putting your face in the wind sometimes but sprinting is a chess match. I know Dave Bonser over 40 years, he know how to read a race and where to be and where not to be. When the pack pauses move up quickly, sometimes it only takes 10 hard pedal strokes. You look like a strong rider once you get up front at the end you have to defend it because they will come around you. Watch how Bonser keeps defending his position, because he knows they will come around the second the pack takes a breather. I am a sprinter and I wouldn't show my face up front until the last 5 laps, I would let them pull me around and save my energy for the end. I'd watch how the race was playing out lap after lap and I knew exactly when and where I could move up. Good luck stay safe.
Thanks for the detailed comment! Very hard to have a perfect race, and I think I mentioned that knowing everyone in the field and who to stick with is a big help. Regrettably, in 2024 I was only a spectator. I decided from 2023's race that it was just too sketchy and with age safety rises up as a priority. I don't know your name, wonder if we've ever raced together? I took some footage of this years race, hope to get it on RUclips.
@@mikem4814 I don't blame ya I always hated riding or racing in the rain. I admit I"m a fair weather rider. I know my abilities I'm worried about someone else taking me down. Riders today are so squirrely compared to years ago. All categories racing all together can be dangerous. Just watching rider posted videos on youtube make me nervous. I talk to the tv telling them to move up, I have no idea who is riding or their abilities. Some guys are very strong but spend the race constantly moving up by the end they can't compete for the finish. The last lap is the only one that matters. Have you eve raced at the velodrome.

Another reason not to use tubeless tires.
Noted, but this is optional if you wanted to start fresh, or if you were planning to sell the tires. Last time I moved tires to a different wheel, I just left all the old sealant and it was fine. Lately I have been trying TPU tubes, possibly the best of both worlds.
