Hi Douglas, thank you so much for sharing your experiences and insight. It has certainly helped to provide direction on how to get noticed in the industry (and how hard it is). I have recently been making a portfolio of films on my RUclips channel, with my most recent work on the wildlife of Sumatra from my self-funded expedition there. I have other projects in the works too. I'm currently uploading full documentaries, but I also intend to make shorter showreels to share with potential employers in the industry. Do you have any advice on who to send my portfolio to? P.s - I'm also from Hampshire and have spent a lot of time in the New Forest, which is why I find your story especially inspiring!

oh my god i loved Patrick and the Whale! im dutch and i saw it in cinema! Now im finding out there were Q&As! I wish i knew that! This this movie made me cry because of how amazing the shots were and it made me fall in love with whales.

I love the way you describe your encounter with Furiosa and the emotions that came with it! There’s definitely something deeply intriguing about stories of encounters between humans and wild animals. Hello Douglas, thank you for this. I am constantly surprised by the number of people from diverse backgrounds who tell me that the behind the scenes DVD extras from BBC or Nat Geo are their favourite part….a Scottish camera operator spends weeks of trekking to a location in Mongolia , spends 3 days in a camera blind for 30 seconds of Snow Leopard footage. There is huge interest, I have watched BBC Spring Watch BTS and was amazed at the seemingly kilometres of cables snaking its way from remote cameras to a production truck. I am really hoping that you will stick with this as many of us who religiously consume BBC earth and similar material are very interested in the “how” of it. Thank you for doing this.

Can I ask, do you really need a bachelors of science majoring in zoology or something to pursue this career? Will it be a lot easier?

Hi. I have had this lens for about three years now and shoot it on both Nikon D2x and D4. It’s an amazing lens for the price. I believe I paid around 500£ for mine and it was like new. I shot it quite often with 1,4 Tc which still gives fantastic results. It can even go with the 2x Tc when placed on a good tripod and use proper long lens techniques.

I bought this lens a few weeks back for about 450 dollars. very very happy with the lens!!!

I also got this lens right now for my canon 5d mark 4.. the pictures were sharp... very impressed

Will this amazing lens work well on Canon SL3?

I’ve just ordered mine a few days back and I can’t wait to shoot with it.

I use this on my D7200 which is APSC sensor.. also on the D7200 you can crop the image down in the image area setting to another 1.3x so it gives you even more than 900mm.. think its something like 1200mm and still have a decent image

when doing wildlife photography use back button focus .. and al servo .. 150-600 sport is amazing with my canon 5d mark iv

It can be locked at 400mm

Between this lens and the tamron 150-600mm G2 what would your pick be?

What would be a good option for filming deer? At Max up to 600-700 yards away and still make out good detail? The videos will just be for me to look at, I like to keep track of different deer in my area. Looking for most budget friendly options, is that even possible?

The lens lock is meant to be a soft lock in positions other than 150 and 600. It is meant to release upon a gentle move of the zoom ring. Quite intentional.

I thought the zoom was meant to be all wow, the moon pictures weren't all that. The sport version of this is too expensive...

i bought this lense to use on my nikon D7200.. and i goitta say the sharpness at 600mm is fantastic. Really surprised me how quick it was to focus not using any custom settings at all.. fantastic lense for the money

half job, really: without noticing the aperture in each photo, nothing is sure for any focal lens!!

Nice job! I think the greatest thing about this lens is that it puts a long telephoto within reach (financially) for the amateur/hobbyist. I love mine.
