Thank you for uploading this presentation. Understanding these ideas is important to our future as human beings. Rouvroy's and Morozov's critiques are complementary. Both are needed to raise awareness of the dangers of "algorithmic governance." Morozov focuses on the end use and exploitation of data by global capitalism. He is right to point out the lack of good faith and the use of data to manage symptoms of a destructive system. And right to call for practical action. However, this is also basically an addiction. The end result of this addiction is a sort of helplessness. Rouvroy analyzes what intellectual and psychological changes are induced by algorithmic governance and digital addiction. It's important to understand how algorithms are used to inspire "addict-like" behavior that is pre-thought. Morozov is right that profiling is used to prevent positive action against an abusive economic system. Rouvroy is accurate in her description of the way algorithmic profiling has created a culture where "possibilities" are treated as if they are happening. Algorithmically-controlled people fail to individuate, which raises human rights questions. How do we preserve the rights of people without individuation? Would a person with no consciousness of themselves as a subject even desire rights? This undermines human rights by acting on our psychological understanding of ourselves.

Antoinette Rouvroy's work is important to citizens who have been victimized by surveillance abuse by state or local entities. This corresponds to what she says about manipulating people to act in a pre-thought manner. It is also corresponds to governance by treating "the possible as if it is already happening." This has created an entire corrupt industry in the US based on so-called "homeland security." This industry thrives on digital profiling. There is no process if someone is abused by this industry. Big data has basically created the same sort of profiling that was such a controversy with police in the past, but in a manner that is harder to grasp because it utilizes digital profiles accessed behind the scenes.

one can always try to divest from all such destructive, inter-competing, coercive tech. All is not watched, however all is late capitalism now. Algorithms will make jack-shit difference to the incoming reality based on climate, exodus, displacement and the end of exuberance.

I take his point, but in citing the ECB as being the territory that needs to be captured, he misses that if you want to capture the ECB the only election worth fighting is the German one, all the others are mere side shows. In addition it should also be worth noting the success of neoliberalism, which less won elections than meticulously captured the political process through the use of think tanks, universities, etc. When the likes of Peterson spouts his fever dreams about so-called Cultural Marxism having captured or controlling the over arching intellectual framework, that is not what exists, but arguably is something to aim for.

For my french friends: Je me permet de partager mes notes sur cette vidéo. :€

Denisa Kera was a high point, speaks of Hacker spaces as a return to a preinstitutional science of the 16th Century, alchemy and creation of living instruments - giving us new cosmological insights and policy directives, rather than just scientific facts. Minerals Baby is the allocation of resources per human, which she juxaposes with turning raw minerals into gold, something that does not put humans at the center. Minerals have an agency of their own.

really had hard time understanding the depth of the overall point Yetiskin ''tried'' to help the audience gain. She is jumping from one dimension to another with missing the granularity of the connection with each other. She made no sense to anyone and i had quite a challenge piecing things together. Yetiskin, you have to first have a concept and then you have to ''learn'' how to spread that concept without inundating yourself with convoluted ideas.I think the challenge she had was her ability to use the English language translating Turkish sayings into English freezing the audience on the spot. She threw me off by sounding ''w'' like ''v''. I actually think her spiel should be showcased as an example for a bad public speaker. I was amazed during her talk , she really made no sense. She started off on the wrong foot by speaking about ''Gezi'' and connecting the dots. I knew where she was trying to get at by the ''Gezi'' topic and her presumption over People's ''Gezi'' knowledge threw her entire speech down in the drain. Yetiskin, find a day job

Great video. There are not that many people who have the courage to do this. People like Laura Poitras essentially accepted that their lives would be hurt, but they did it nevertheless, for the sake of a better world. These are the people that really care about human freedom, peace and happiness, they inspire millions of us to long for the world becoming a less nasty, threatening place to live. Watching this, we know that you cannot complain about the cruelties of ISIS (the beheading of innocent journalists) without talking about Guantanamo Bay. We are responsible. Maybe one day we will get to a tipping point, where so many people decide to live and let live in peace, that the world will become a true "social" place for all of us. But to get there, we still need people of courage doing a lot of things most of us wouldn't dare. We owe them.

Laura, I enjoyed your presentation. However, quite early in your talk you showed images of US citizens staring vacantly in bewilderment at the events of 11 September 2001. You said you saw innocence. As a citizen of the rest of the world, I saw something different. What I saw, sadly, was childlike and vulnerable disengagement, as people who have voted for decades for political leaders who kept them ignorant of the pernicious US foreign policies that gave rise to the attack on the World Trade Center. Yet demands for accountability and for policies that lead to justice and peace have been all-but absent. The bewilderment is genuine, but the events of that day should have been a wake-up call. A frightened, apolitical public yes. Innocence, not quite the right word.

A call to protest and divest, move on to greener fields! In utter disgust at Google's anti-innovative monopolistic thuggery, especially its latest suffocating devolution into a system that now grants the privilege of free speech on its servers only to people willing to bind themselves to a damning Google account (thus also forcing us to reject Tor), yet again I propose everyone with even an ounce of respect for free association, variety of choice, liberty & dignity to cease all interactions on youtube. They're unworthy of even serving as platforms for our discussions and this architecture seems to have been designed to ensure free/open culture cant fit in through the entrance. If they don't share our aversion to Digital Apartheid, if they wrinkle their noses at 'undesirables', its time for a nasty revelation: 'undesirables' aren't exactly vying for your approval, and we're tired of generating your advertisement revenue. What better time to discard a tumor than right after Bruce's suggestion that 400 MHz of freedom ultimately trumps a Terahertz of shackles and humiliation! P.S This is more of a reminder, folks with an I.Q above that of a desk lamp already piled on the exodus ship last century. ***In loving memory of Aaron Swartz***

Greensboro, North Carolina is a UPS hub. Everything coming to the Charlotte, NC area goes there first. If I order something from Atlanta, GA (four hours south of me) it will pass right through Charlotte and turn around back to me after passing through the Greensboro hub. Just technically interesting, would not surprise me at all the UPS is in bed with NSA.
