Deep Purple's Burn cover on Hammond Sk2
Here is my interpretation of Deep Purple's Burn with a Hammond Sk2 combined with a pedal board and a Behringer Odyssey analog synth for the "spooky" sound in the solo part. I hope you'll enjoy it.

Ventilator II vs Hammond SK2 Leslie
Просмотров 42 тыс.9 лет назад
Quite a few people would like to know what the Neo Instruments Ventilator II sounds like and what does it change. Here is a demo with different organ configurations. I am comparing the Ventilator with the internal Hammond SK2 Leslie simulator. I have tried to keep the sound quite neutral but I usally mix the ventilator drive with the internal SK2 drive and tweek a bit the sound in order to get ...

    This isn't even a contest ..... Hammond has FINALLY nailed the perfect Leslie algorithm when they introduced the XK-1 and XK-3 .... You don't need another box to muck up the works ! 🙄

    Actually the SK2's Leslie simulator sounds pretty good for a built in effect. Was surprised that it was usable if you needed it in a pinch. The Ventilator II does have a unique sound. I'm shopping for a Leslie effect now for an XK1 I just ;picked up. This one will go on the list.

      @@DaFoozy - Native LANGUAGE? Google is your friend when it comes to lyrics. When it come to lyrics, Joni Mitchell and lots of other song writers care. Even I, as a keyboard player of about 50 years, care about lyrics. So, yah, someone cares. Pretty good keyboard work on your part any way, I mean if anyone cares about slavishly copying someone else's solo. I could never be bothered. I'd rather spend my energies attempting to learn to improvise my own solos. I have NEVER ever heard a recording of Jon Lord copying one of his own improvised solos. He played something new every time, as far as I know.

    A sim will always just be a sim in room (out a sizable pa, a different story) but of the two sims here the SK built in was noticeably better (more accurate rotation, ramp up/down, cab tone sim, and belt flutter/slip simulation). I'm really baffled reading from so many "you need to get a ventilator". It seems like parroting and sales fodder. If you own a newer clone you likely have the best possible already onhand (again, for a sim that is). Rather than throwing $ at pedals consider adding a real leslie ( vintage or new, of any reasonable sort). That's money well spent for working organists (imo)

    • @DaFoozy
      @DaFoozy 2 года назад

      Well it depends. If it's just staying at home and you don't need to carry the Leslie around, yeah of course. Personally, I find the internal Leslie too studio clean, a bit boring. Also, of you want multiple effects before the Leslie such as a valve preamp, you can't use the internal Leslie. I personally wouldn't go anywhere without my ventilator.

      But for the price of a new or good condition Leslie, you can get a Neo Vent, a new keyboard, and a bigass keyboard amp, and still have money left over! I agree, nothing like the real thing, but the pedal isn't a bad substitute for the average keyboard player

    I have the SK2 and enjoy the current generation of the built in Leslie. If the Vent is at factory default, why is the horn rotor going TWICE the speed in 'chorale' mode ?? It is as if they have TWO mikes on it at 180 degrees..... If you can, see what that is all about then post another for us ? Thanks for the effort... Now, for a really live feel, I bought the Leslie 'Studio 12'... that is one little 75lb. powerhouse (with the SK2) !!

  • @steveskouson9620

    OK, first let me say, I am NOT a musician. BUT, I grew up in a family of keyboard players. I can EASILY hear the difference, with the simulator. It sounds like both (Leslie) speaker reflectors are mounted on the same shaft, completely IN phase. You would NEVER hear that, with a real Leslie. Also, with the real unit, you're going to hear the different enhancement units accelerating and decelerating at different speeds. That is a MAJOR part of the Leslie. (The treble horns will speed up and slow down more quickly, than the bass reflector. And, that is just physics.) Close, but no enchilada! steve

    • @richievpiano

      A huge Hammond SK proprietary feature: The horn and woofer speeds can be highly adjustable in the SK models. Then you can not escape hearing the 'doppler effect' differences. Also SK 96 tonewheels are adjustable. No other brand offers that feature.

    • @mississippijohnfahey7175
      @mississippijohnfahey7175 2 года назад

      Uh, the Neo Vent does speed up the treble and bass separately... That's like the main thing it does. Close, but no enchilada Steve :-)

    I can hear it helps somewhat but worth paying 500 or more?? I know us keyboardists are always looking to better our sound, but does the audience care? i doubt it. The real deal is always a real Leslie, even with a crappy organ? and or a clone, anything will sound better with a Leslie.. I find this Neo is way overated!! I heard that the GSI Burn is better for simulated leslie and overdrive, and you can edit more of the sounds!!!

    Thanks for the upload! helped a lot :D I The MK build-in Leslie simulator is really good in my opinion! I think the Vent is more phasing and high end (It has more overtones) and I really love the phasing sound especially in combination with the overdrive as it rotates fast ;) Killing!!! Buying this soon!!

    I've had both the SK and the 'Vent and have concluded that if you want 99% of a real Leslie in an effects pedal, get the 'Vent (especially the Vent II). If you are satisfied with 80-85% of a real Leslie, the SK provides that. If you don't happen to own an SK, chances are the Vent is going to substantially improve the Leslie (and organ) sound on your board.
