3rd year tree? nah it's done. You have more patience than most of us, It'd get no mercy from me if it's still producing meh fruit after 3 years.
Got one that is almost a year old. It is still loaded with fruit. I managed to try one but I think it was too early. Beautiful tree
Spectacular!
wow 37*F, we're still hitting 81*F today. Those CLBCs sure do look perfect. I knew they were a top fig but WOW.
Lovely fig
I have a very mature tree. And I got my figs off of it probably starting three weeks ago all the way up to about about a week and a half ago ago. So hopefully as your tree matures, you will get more figs earlier for a better ripening. 😊🪴
So seems like it ripens all in very quick succession. I love that!
They do seem so thick and sweet like candy! Drool . . . again!! Well done :-) I love diatomaceous earth so much!! Hope it works for you!
Yeah girl! The more I learn about it the more impressed I am! 🥰
Thank you so much for posting! I'm curious what agricultural zone are you in? All my fig trees have almost lost their leaves!
No problem! I’m in zone 5B/6A. But it’s thanks to the greenhouse. 😁
Hi, Nice video and setup. I am a fellow fruit and fig grower from Connecticut. I have RLBV, RDB and Adriatic JH in the ground for three years now. I cover them every winter, after pruning them to 4’ high. One important thing to do is to have a strategy for voles, mice or rats. I put a bowl of moth balls under the cover, which keeps rodents away. My trees produce very well for me, the first two ripening most of their crop, but AJH ripens a quarter at best. Where did you buy the GH from? How much did it cost to purchase and construct?
Thanks so much for the rodent tip! I’ll add that to my arsenal! I bought the GH from Costco online! I bought it last September when they reduced the price for the season by $2k. All in, it cost me about $13k + heaters, water pump, pebbles + $9k for cement.
Did you take a water meter and stick it in the ground before you watered that tree on Friday? If you didn't, you overwatered it on Friday and that is what caused it to split. I always use a water meter whether my fig trees are in the ground or in a container each and every time no matter how many days go by. If they are in containers I stick the meter in the top, then stick it through the holes on the bottom just to double check. I have been growing fig trees for over 40 years and learned through my mistakes.
I never thought to do that! Thank you for the tip!
Hahaha, I expected you to say WOW! 😂
I like to keep you all on your toes! 🤣 honestly though, I expected a huge “wow” too. It has all the makings of a “wow” fig - doesn’t it? I think the next one will be better. 🤞🏻
Thank you for the cutting! I can't wait to get it growing. I have had over 40 different varieties over many years and never though about this one. The CLBC looks like a winner also in the video where you and your mom are having a taste test. Happy that I bought that one from you also! Did you get any figs ripen the first year with your MIB?
I didn’t get any to ripen until year 2. But I’m not in a terrific zone either and didn’t have the greenhouse until October last year. You may have a different and better environment! CLBC and Noire de Barbentane and LEON’S Montenegro REALLY SURPRISED me. Unbelievably good. Also, JHA. I’m loving this hobby so much! 🤗
I have decided that next year I will be planting 5 of my fig trees in ground. CH, Bethlehem Black, Brown Turkey, unknown, I-258. Might plant one in my greenhouse. But not sure about that yet. Still having figs here. Was nice to have that warm up again.
Oooh! I keep remembering how you have JH Adriatic in ground - am I remembering wrong? Cuz I think the adriatics are hardy and it is such an amazing fig that I want to try it if I ever get it to root! 😄
@@afig3539 No, I don’t have any figs in ground yet. I have Adriatic JH though & it’s a wonderful fig! I’m thinking RdB is a good candidate for in ground fig. Just had 3 B Madeira figs tonight. 2 amazing & 1 a little unripe.
I would love to know your top 5 of the year after all the harvest is done this year!
You got it! So far… 1. Madeira Island Black, i258, CdD Roja 2. Leon’s Montenegro 3. JH Adriatic + Strawberry Verte 4. Socorro Black + Zingarella + Ciliegia Dolce + CdD Blanca Negra 5. Texas Peach + LdA I’ll adjust it once I taste St. Martin, Figo Preto, and Nichadam Haven, CdD Mutante! The picks are purely based on flavor. I think the amount of sun my figs are getting has really affected their flavor + my fertilization (JADAM)
TEXAS PEACH 🍑 FIG 👀👀👀 OMG 😱!!! Now I have to find one of those to add to my collection. -Calvin
😂 Yes, you do!!
poor zaffiro got left out
🤣 It turned out to be my St. Rita!
Where can I acquire a cutting? Also, will you ship to FL?
Sure thing. You could email me. I do PayPal. A-fig@att.net is my email and we could communicate easily that way.
👏👏👏
LOL, bummer it was not up to your standards🤗 I think your thoughts are correct and it is going to give you better tasting fruit next season.
I was glad to finally have a fig that wasn’t AMAZING so people take me seriously! 🤣
Hi there, Texas upper hill country here and suddenly fig obsessed. I guess I’m super lucky with climate. I’ve collected 7 varieties and trying to root 6-7 more. Rooting has proved to be a high learning curve. I will get there! I have 7 acres separate from total 44 acres. Trying to get a good forest going, but figs are my favorite! Let’s do this! Keep going! Do the solar greenhouse! Keep those roots alive!
Love that!!!! Keep on keep in’ on sister! 🥰
Alma or Holly smoke
Yes! Exactly!! Thank you!
I'll need to trade something for one of those
Nice video
Looks delicious
Mine didn't taste like peaches either? But, mines first year, maybe in further years..
I'm looking for some Olympian fig cutting just wondering if you have any
I sure will! I’ll post them on Figbid.com and can let you know here when I do that unless you want to email me: a-fig@att.net
Wow I can’t wait to see how they do that close to the water
I want to give some feedback on Corky’s. I’m growing Corky’s for 6 years. 3 years in CA and 3 outside of CA. In CA it was one of my favorite figs so I planted the tree in ground in my new location. Since leaving CA the tree dropped most of is main crop. The few that didn’t weren’t worth eating. While the tree produced 40 okay Brebas this year I’m going to dig out the tree this winter. So unless you are interested keeping the tree for Brebas I would cull it.
Darn! That’s what I was afraid of! I really appreciate the info…thank you very much!
Good compare all good varieties
😮
Great video very informative!
Hi, thanks for the video. I replicated your set up and even ordered the same filter from the States as I’m in the UK. Question if that’s ok, is any part of your pipe system horizontal at all and roughly how long is the pipe you used? I set mine up with the filter in a pond and the pipe running up a 45 degree bank but it stopped pumping when the water reached the near horizontal section of the pipe. I’ve altered it so it’s always at an angle but it still only pumps about 75% of the way along the pipe then the pump goes slack. It’s roughly 8m of pipe currently so maybe too long. Any thoughts?
I BELIEVE your only issue is pressure. I think if you prime the pump enough, you will get the suction activated. Have you tried that already?
@@afig3539 it was one of the things I was going to try, adding more water. I think I need a second person in to pour it in as I’m pumping. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼
Yes, you definitely do and it will absolutely work and you will be so happy! 😁 Also, to me it seemed that when I left the handle in the upright position, it held on to the pressure longer (when I was filling buckets; so that your not priming it every time).
@@afig3539 I finally got it working with some extra priming and I love it. I’m going to add another check valve as the one on the pump doesn’t seal that well. Thanks again
@@mouse5178 my pleasure! I’m so excited for you! It’s been the best most nutritious way to feed my garden!
Figs are close to mulberry in flavor
I’m going for the CLBC this year
Woohoo!!
Looks SO good
Do you sell cuttings of MIB?
I will! On Figbid, in another month.
Still pushing out high quality figs!!!!❤
Yes, girlfriend! 😍😄
You too!
Between Socorro black and spadafora dark which would you prefer? Looking to buy some of your cuttings.
John, first thank you! Second, the Socorro Black is top-rated by taste and production. There are those out there that believe it may be the same as Irene’s Black Greek! If you have the space for it, I will send you the Spadafora Dark as a gift because to me, they are INCREDIBLE- the both of them. The SPDK is a workhorse and a cherry flavor - it has blown my mind this year. 🥰
@@afig3539 so I jumped the gun. It might be a couple more weeks till I can make my order. That is a very generous offer. Hopefully 🤞 it will still stand after the first. Still getting used to this fixed income stuff.
What do you prefer if any: the plastic pots or the fabric pots for your fig trees?
Now that my trees are maturing, I prefer plastic because they retain the water. The fabric pots lose so much fertilizer and water and dry out so quickly during hot days when it is crucial for them to stay hydrated.
I wonder if you put a makeshift greenhouse over it in early spring if it would give it a jump start. Like put rebar in the ground now. Then in spring use pvc pipe to make hoops. Then greenhouse fabric on top. I’m thinking of doing this with my one of my fig trees this fall. Or next spring plant it.
Omg…it’s awesome that you suggested that because I AM going to do that! They call it a solar greenhouse. I ordered heavy duty plastic tarp and rebar hook stakes! My plan is to build up the wall about another 3 layers on the back side so that it captures the sun all day long and keeps the heat within. I’ll fill it with leaves this fall and maybe throw a blanket over. What do you think? I’m hoping it’s easy and doable for people in our climate.
@@afig3539 I think it’s a great plan. It may still die to the ground but it probably will give them a big jump start in the spring. Put some mint garlic to keep out mice & other creatures. (Heard it helped)
@catherineshiddengarden2596 great thinking! I also need to make sure I leave a couple of openings in the bricks for air circulation. I’m really excited! I hope, I hope I don’t kill my Negronne and RdB!!!
@@afig3539 well you can always take cuttings off of those two and save them. And if it does kill the mother plant, then you have cuttings to root.
I have one fig that turned into being a english brown turkey type who has very similar leaves to my olympian. My olympian produced its first figs, they dont form well, the bottom gets red orange when fully ripe the rest remin juicy white but it taste exactly the same as my EBT, but the the EBT forms correctly and the inside is all amber/orange, its juicier more like honey vs olympian more sugary. Im keeping the EBT because it my mother’s first fig tree, that never gave fruit til i learned figs last winter, so it gave its first figs, 40-50 of them.
Thats exactly what I was worried about this Olympian - was that it may be a brown turkey! For a second, I forgot I was talking about the Olympian thought I was talking about the BT. That’s why I said it’s taste like the ones in stores. I only realized after the fact that it’s not supposed to taste like that! 🤣
@@afig3539 olympian is an english brown turkey type. Just like how MBVS is a chicago type
Ahhhh ok
These are the only ones that ripened for me in Northern NJ. I love them
I have one had a ton of growth not many figs though. Great video
I live in WNY and would love to grow figs! Which fig would you suggest for my region and flavor? Have a great day!
Ooh! Fun question! Do you have an idea of what type of figs you would enjoy most (honey/berry/cherry/caramel/sugary)?
@@afig3539 Hi! I love all figs! Growing up, my dad would make "holiday trays" for Thanksgiving and Christmas, that consisted of fruits, nuts and figs. We also make an Italian cookie Cucidati. So, my answer is, I'm not sure, I've never eaten a fig I didn't love. Lol
Great answer! RdB (Ronde de Bordeaux) berry, early, plentiful! Italian Honey (Lattarula) honey, early, plentiful! JH Adriatic - green exterior/red interior- SUPER delicious, hardy, tangy, very sweet, complex berry flavors! If you are in 5B, I believe that after 3 years, you may be able to put these trees in ground. I am doing that test right now. But you should definitely bring them into your garage during winter until then. 😃
@@afig3539 They all sound wonderful! I am in zone 6b. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
@@michellem9182you should try Niagara Black. Sounds like you are close to that zone.
This is great. What part of the country are you in? (Sorry if you already mentioned it.) P.S. Last year I cut my trees a bit back and piled wood chip mulch on them for protection, and it worked PERFECTLY. Same climate zone as you. I'm in the Denver area. Did a video on it. Hope you have a similar experience with the leaves.
I’m in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago (northern-ish Illinois). Thank you so much for the insight on wood chips! I have pine shavings handy - do you think that would work?
My Chicago Hardy figs were not as good as previous years. They seemed to not want to ripen all the way. Which usually they’re pretty early.
Yummy 😋 YLN so big fig
I am jealous, i have had my tree 2 years and zero figs 😢
Oh, geez, I know that feeling. You will be rewarded though, for this patience! 🙏 I’ve got a Cdd Noir that I haven’t gotten a fig from for 3 years. Maybe next year is my lucky year!
I’m grateful I’m not the only crazy one growing figs in zone 6b!! 🤣😂🤣 I have 17!!!
Definitely not the only crazy one! 🤣
I love your video!! I live in zone 6b. Do you cover them in the Winter? Can you pls make a video before the Winter to show us how you protect them?!! Blessings from Kentucky!! 🙌🏻🦋🙏🏻
Hi there - thanks you and absolutely! I don’t cover them…I did paint their trunks tho - incredibly important! (The white tree paint)
