BWV 4 - Christ lag in Todesbanden | Zimmermann Band
Bach was only 21 or so in 1707 when he wrote the first version of Christ lag in Todesbanden and already, Bach was writing masterpieces with huge emotional depth and symbolism.*
Bach was also already a well-cultured and international composer. This cantata is scored in the French style by including a second viola part yet includes a rustic Italian violin concerto in the Aria 'Jesus Christus, Gottes Sohn' while also developing the German school further than his contemporaries or predecessors.
The cantata is based on the verses of the hymn of the same name by Martin Luther, written c. 150 years earlier. A short sinfonia in the grave style sets the scene before the opening chorus properly opens...

BWV 230 - Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden | Zimmermann Band
Closing Zimmermann Band's Easter 2021 Bach series, the motet BWV 230 - Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden is a setting of the Psalm 117 - O praise the Lord all ye heathen (BCP). Despite being the shortest psalm in the canon with only 4 verses, Bach still find time to write four fuguettas on different themes. For respite, Bach sets the words 'Denn seine Gnade und Wahrheit' ('For his merciful kindness ...
BWV 244: Matthäus-Passion - Erbarme dich, mein Gott | Zimmermann Band
The Matthäus-Passion is more about meditation and the emotional torment of the characters rather than the actual plot, although there's a lot of that too. At its heart is 'Erbarme dich, mein Gott' which takes place just after the cock crows and Peter betrays of Jesus for the third time. Here, the violin solo is performed by Maxim Del Mar and the countertenor is Tristram Cooke, accompanied by st...
BWV 245 - Johannes-Passion: Ach Herr, laß dein lieb Engelein | Zimmermann Band
Concluding Bach's Johannes-Passion, the poignant chorale 'Ach Herr, laß dein lieb Engelein' asks for Jesus to be laid to rest in the comfort of Abraham before the triumphal conquering of death and the second coming. In all of the angst, pain, and confusion of the Johannes-Passion, from the opening chorus of 'Herr, unser Herrscher' to 'Es ist vollbracht', Bach chooses to end with hope; simply th...
BWV 61: Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland - Siehe, ich stehe vor der Tür (Recitativo) | Zimmermann Band
Zimmermann Band presents the spine-tingling recitativo from J. S. Bach's Cantata for the first Sunday of Advent, Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland (BWV 61), composed 1714 in Weimar at the age of 29. In this cantata, Bach combines the French style with the Germanic chorale tradition to dramatic effect; particularly in the overture, referencing the practice in Louis XIV's court where such pieces would...

HERR, dieser wunderbare Gnade bin, elendiger Sünder, überhaupt NICHT wert....😢
Hier uit Johannesburg
The face diapers drove me from this. It's like imposing anti-logos deception onto Logos perfection.
Beautifully sung, and must've been a joy to sing for these smart musician-singers without all the hand waving in their faces. Bravi.
❤
Lose the masks
Love the Bass. Hope you have a brilliant career. You're so worth it.
What a fantastic bass !
Großartig!!
SOLI DEO GLORIA🙏🙏🙏
My go-to for BWV 4…
Mine was put out by Vanguard Records in 1960. Dark, heavy, passionate. But I can't find it on the net.
Bravo!!
Halleluja !!!!!!!!! Um das geht's!!!!!!!
Stunning texture of voices, superb melodic tension, excellent artists, composer God of notes...supreme art, thank you Supreme Kantor..
Petit ensemble d’une qualité exceptionnelle !!!😮❤
Maravillosos😍
Lovely performance!
Thank you for the English subtitles What a wonderful prayer
It makes no sense to sing this piece with a quartett of solists. It lacks the energy in the initial Gloria and the final Alleluja. By the way is interpretation is not expressive.
What "Gloria"? You don't know what you're talking about. Keep your lame aesthetic judgments to yourself.
I can't agree. I think it works far better with a quartet than with a choir even of 12, let alone more.
What a beautiful voice Caroline Halls has! The whole quartet is top-notch.
So clear. Flawless. Perfect. What church is this?
Good job Chris, Ollie, Tristram and co :)
Excellent!
Grazie infinite
Einfach perfekt!
REALLY ! This should have had at least a million views !! O u t s t a n d i n g 🌹♥️
St Gabriel's in Pimlico, London, the church is beautiful, along with this inspired rendition of Luther's handiwork.
Absolutely beautiful the ensemble and the voices BUT the accelerare in the Halleluja of the first choir is not necessary. I had the chance of doing this cantata with Thomaskantor herr Hans-Joachim Rotzsch and he didn't increased the tempo signifincantly; he just let him go with the natural rythim of the semiquavers in the score. Notwithstanding the aforementioned, I think this is one of the most beautiful verisions of this cantata I´ve ever heard. Congrats!!!!
I see they placed the singers in front as was done in Bach's time.
The beauty of this Kantata is out of this world , and unrivaled, and indescribable, and off the charts
Maravilhosa interpretação.
Ideal music for COVID times! Real memento Mori consideration!
I really like the bass soloist. I'm glad he sings the low E2 (one ledger line below the bass staff). I as a bass singer myself cringe when I hear some baritone alter the music so he doesn't sing the low E.
I feel ya, but altering the music is better than trying to sing the low E and failing.
@@mwnyc3976 Pick a bass, not a baritone to sing the solo. That low E is an easy note for me to sing.
Schitterend!
First, my apologies for not replying in Italian. Performing BWV 4 without cornett and trombones is legitimate. Bach is known to have performed this piece three times: in 1707 in Mühlhausen, and in 1724 and 1725 in Leipzig. Only in 1725 did he use the cornett and trombones.
Unfortunately the players are wearing silly masks. It must be a modern Catholic church because the crucifix is put off to the side. Suggest listening without watching.
Looks like Pugin church. Sorry the furniture placement upsets you.
@@riverstun What is Pugin church? That's no furniture, that's my Lord.
It's an Anglican church, built 1851-53.
@@mwnyc3976 Thanks. Designed by Pugin. Got it. 🙂
Wow, this is maybe even better than the Christ lag in Todesbanden on the other video. And, again, it's probably the most ginger Bach on RUclips.
The profound of Bach's music is equal to the infinite expanse of the universe
an outstanding performance of the cantata. The best I have heard!
Have you heard Harnoncourt's?
hey, just a random chorus member doing his homework here. was here for "es war ein wunderlicher Krieg", and thought what you've accomplished with only 4 singers was AMAZING! that song inherently has such little breathing room amidst that many Germans lyrics that need every consonant to be taken care of, and they were delivered perfectly!
Beautiful performance; marvellous singers and musicians. Must find more about this great ensemble.
English translation 😂
Quark
