I used to live in the Royal Train Shed, Wolverton Park. I loved having all the trains going by all the time. The balcony of my bedroom overlooked the line in and out of the Works, and I'd regularly see all kinds of stock moving around, including the Royal Train itself on many occasions. Watching the rail head treatment unit at night was spectacular from the lounge!

Hold on, I'm confused! To read The Guardian, the country's rail system is in a parlous state. And yet what I see here are fast trains, one after the other, sleek, heavy-duty rolling stock, no trafic jams, decent on-time performance . . . certainly puts the U.S. to shame; what am I missing?
