Why do to uncouple the trains in the yard? Isn't that extra work uncoupling then recoupling when they are put back in service?

It’s probably a yard move
this was probably a previous shuttle train as the S train, having many routes but specifically the one on far rock away has only 5 carts so this can provide a subtle explanation. Hope you find this helpful!
