I love the analogy of blood bank to a Financial bank. There is still a lot to do. Do we have a national policy and action plan for blood bank and transfusion services in Cameroon. It does not surface to create blook transfusion services without equipping and making them functional. I totally agree with Dr, Elvis

A friend posted the information about this meeting on his status...I asked and he later sent the full video of the zoom to me. I've gone through some of it. . My name is Ashu Egbe and I'm a 58 years old sickle cell patient aka warrior. Yes, I've been living with sickle cell for 58 years. I know of a few warriors older than me (early 60s) and many in their 20s, 30s and 40s. So sure, sickle cell is not the end of the world. I'm glad to know that the medical professionals are showing more concern about this blood condition because so far, it's mainly the warriors that have been championing the awareness campaigns. I personally have been advocating for sickle cell for over 30 years. And 3 years ago I took early retirement to focus on the sensitization campaign but also for better management of those who are living with sickle cell. Eradication of SCD by 2060 is a good and ambitious project. I would rather talk of the considerable reduction of the number of children born with sickle cell disease. This is what our campaign dubbed "Operation know Your Genotype" is all about. It's so simple; if the population, especially the youths, are encouraged to know their sickle cell status (genotype) before marriage then they'll take informed decisions. Like the lady in the UK said, it will not be to discourage carriers from getting married. It's not in anyone's interest to stop people who are in love to end their relationship, after all, some people can decide not to have biological children and instead adopt. That is why we are targeting the youths so that at the early stage in a relationship it's possible to stop if they realize that they're not compatible... especially if they would want to have children in future. . We have therefore been going to institutions of higher education where most of the youths are likely to start love relationships. The churches and community centers too are great places to go to. We also adopted the strategy to train volunteers in sickle cell advocacy. This is a good strategy because the advocates become more knowledgeable to go out with the "Know Your Genotype" message/slogan. These are young people who can easily carry the message to their friends. We've also tried training staff of civil status registry of councils. So far, 2 councils in Douala opened their doors to us. These are persons who are in contact with people who come to register their weddings. We believe that if they have to advise the future couples, they should be in a position to provide the correct information. Some people argue that it may be too late at that stage for a future couple to stop the wedding, but at least they'll be informed. . Let me end here by saying that for the management of sickle cell regular controls is very important. The Baptist Health Services have in most of their hospitals an outpatient "sickle cell clinic" that holds once a month. Our organizations (CASC-Cameroon & Ashu Egbe Foundation) are in partnership with Mbingo Annex Mamfe & Bonaberi in Douala. And also a Full Gospel hospital in Limbe (Balm of Gilead Health Center). Sickle cell patients go there for their monthly controls. There are testimonials by many warriors and mothers of warriors that since they started attending the clinics they can go for many months without hospitalizations due to crisis. If this proactive method is practiced in many hospitals it will help many warriors to start living more comfortable lives and feel acceptable in their communities. .
