Love the beats. And very informative. Doing this this coming spring.
Useful information ❤
Great video. You answered all of my questions. We moved into a new place with older trees and some are getting very tall, but not bushy. I'm going to get out there and prune. There's about 5 bushes in a row
I have two stems and it’s tall, how do I make it shorter without killing it, I gave this lilac bush to my mom it was her last Mother’s Day gift, I removed it and moved it up to my house, I just moved it again to the deck area, bc my grandsons dog goes out there I was afraid he’d kill it.
This plant is very special to me I want to take care of it and not let it die
Our Rose of Sharon bushes are beautiful, and huge! They'll be trimmed back this fall, for sure! Vey informative video. Thanks!
I don’t ever remember my grandmas trees getting that many stalks../ suckers …seems like hers 😢 hard 4/5 My grandmother’s purple lilac trees only had 4 to 5 tree branches she didn’t get all those suckers like I see on your tree …is there different trees that grow differently …that are of the lilac Family
Why not just trim to ground?
Man, I was waiting for the big reveal at the end! I wanted to see what it looked like in the summer with the blooms on it! 😅
Thank you, best video I have seen on pruning a rose of sharon that has gotten too tall, mine are about 8 foot and I have it tied up, the branches have gotten too heavy and out of control, now I know how to cut it back to a good height and still have it look nice and healthy. Best video yet!
love the music
Hi Bob, I transplanted a rose of Sharon last fall. It is looking stressed right now (May) and the buds at the top are brown and dry. Should I prune it now or wait until fall? Thank you
What do you advise for propagating a Rose of Sharon? I want to take a cutting and I suspect that soft wood in the late spring/early summer is best, but is that accurate?
They make insane amounts of seeds...mice food
Very informative...thank you!
I want to avoid all the little new plants that arise under my Rose of Sharon, should I cut off all the seed pods in Fall?
Looking like Marlon Brando's gardener brother...
Would’ve been great to have tight camera shots to see exactly where he was making the thinning cuts.
Very boring speaker. I had to quit watching before getting half way through.
Hi Bob, Thank you for sharing your helpful information. Lots of great tips here!
Excellent video Thank you! -maybe a bit slow for me but i guess some beginners will appreciate the pace, to consider each piece of information...+ people really need to chill out anyway! ...i know you know this so i wonder why you don't use anvil pruners & loppers for dead wood -so's not to dull the blades of the bypass tools faster than necessary. i use an anvil pruner quite a lot. it's a quicker, easier cut for dead branches also, and i've never had to sharpen any of my anvil pruners or my anvil lopper in several years now. i'm sure that if i used my bypass tools for everything i'd have to sharpen them much more often.
Thank you for the video!
Too slow, make it quick and lively, speak louder.
is this hibiscus good for infusions ?
totally agree on the music, not necessary and distracting with the sound of the wind, etc. good information though
Very helpful ! Bob, you just saved my white lilac shrub! It's about 6 years old and has never been pruned and yes, the flowers are getting smaller. We also lost about 1/4 of the lilac two winters ago after a few "polar vortexes" . I was going to have hubby dig it up (and replace it, of course), but you've given me hope that it can be saved! Thank you for your video.
Great video! But what I would like to know is, do you cut it above or below the nub? Thanks!
What is the date of the pruning? When should I prune? Late fall or early spring? THANKS!!
early Spring before leaves appear
Now, if I could just keep the Japanese beetles from desteoying the flowers it would be great.
great info
Thanks for a well produced pruning tutorial.
This was an excellent video--thanks very much. I've just completed my pruning task in Manassas, VA.
thank you
Great stuff thanks but I wish the music had been left out - completely unneccessary, in fact quite distracting.
How do I kill these they a r e so invasive I want them gone from my yard!!
MrDoritodude They're so beautiful
Nice video. I pruned our plant tonight, and it was much easier with your instructions. I'm just wondering why an Ann Arbor resident would allow an MSU staff member Into her property! LOL
Helpful video, thanks. We bought a house that came with two larger lilacs, trees really, along the inside of our back yard fence. I actually like no low growth and I like the taller, tree look. I do get some sprouts at the ground level that I just clip off. I will likely do some pruning to keep the lilacs from getting too high and keep them at least within 6' step ladder reach. Question: The lower parts don't get much sunlight as the fence blocks it, the lower branches tend to get moss growth. I brush and pull it off with my hands. Is the moss bad for the these lower branches or trunk of the lilac?
Great video, man! I just got a rose of sharon, by chance, and I've never cared for a hibiscus...This video was a great help! One question - I got these as full trees just popped out of a neighbors yard, and was wondering if I can get some lower lateral branches if I hard prune it way down (they're like 8ft already!) and start from there. I am in 5b and we're having a cold spell, if that will affect the timing for doing this. Thanks, and great video!
I have cut a Rose of Sharon that was 5 to 6 feet down to a 3 foot plant so that it would be easier to move. After it was moved and it began to grow back, I trimmed it to a few main branches to develop it into a good structure. Often when you cut a plant back hard you get abnormal amounts of shoots that grow too close to each other and further pruning to thin it becomes necessary.
Hi Bob, great video, thanks for the tips. I have a large unkempt lilac in the front yard that is in desperate need of a heavy prune. Is it ok to do this in the late summer or early fall? I hope all is well with you.
Thanks this was helpful. I have two "trees" like you said are all flowers at the top. I am guessing to do your method I need to slowly start removing the big thick over grown branches to allow more light to the lower potion of the lilac tree. I would guess some are at least two inches thick. I would venture a guess that both plants are at least 8 ft tall and bending way over. Luckily there isn't any dead wood on either but I haven't done much with either over the years. Thanks again. Tim
AH! what about the shape.....not very good....i would have cut it to 5 foot...then shaped it in a more rounded fashion....These shrubs get VERY ratty looking and need to be kept under control....think you could have done better!
Yes they can get pretty big. The one we chose we to show selective pruning and not serious heading back techniques. You are correct some get very big and would need a more agressive type of pruning.
I have one the size of a Buick and I just take a trimmer to it every spring. I take off a foot all around it!!
Thank you! By far the BEST video I could find that explained exactly how to prune my plant!!
Thank you so much in taking the time to share me how to cut back my Rose of Sharon. Very informative video and now I can go trim mine!
You prolly dont care but if you guys are stoned like me atm you can watch all the new series on Instaflixxer. Been binge watching with my brother for the last days :)
@Nasir Bennett Yea, have been using Instaflixxer for years myself =)
What time of year do you trim it back? I was told by someone for Zone 5 here in New York that I can trim back the Rose of Sharon in March when the plant is dormant during the harsh winter. Ours have never been properly trimmed and mantained. Tim
Tim, the best time is early spring well before it blooms. Since it will for flower buds on the new growth that comes out that same season.
Robert Bricault I also heard you can do it in the fall when the leaves have fallen. Did I miss when is the best time to prune in this video?
yes
