Kevin Lee Sun interprets piano music old and new.
In 2011, Sun won the Silver Medal at the Waring International Piano Competition for his performances of the classical canon. In 2021, for his visionary programming of 20th-century music, he was the sole pianist to be named Finalist of that year’s Berlin Prize for Young Artists in Germany.
Sun has performed a diverse repertoire around the world, including at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna, the Villa Elisabeth in Berlin, and the Banff Centre in Canada. Masterworks for solo piano that Sun has performed in recital include Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Schubert’s Wanderer Fantasy, Schumann’s Kreisleriana, Schoenberg’s Suite, and Hyo-shin Na’s Rain Study.
In 2024, Sun's debut album-his recording of Frederic Rzewski’s "The People United Will Never Be Defeated!" (1975), an hour-long set of variations on the Chilean chant "¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!"-will be released on the Navona Records label.

From a solo recital in Sacramento, California
THE ESSENCE OF THE SOUL: Kevin Lee Sun, piano
November 13, 2024 | Music At Noon series
PROGRAM NOTE
_Buffalo_ is a piece dedicated to several of my friends and their families who have lost their mothers. It was inspired by a Laura Kasischke poem of the same name, from the collection _Dance and Disappear._ The poem is a meditation on motherhood, spirituality, loss, and the intimacy found within life’s small joys. These elements become apparent through contrapuntal development, vertical harmonic progressions, and the unfolding of melodic ideas. They create imagistic moments that arise and recede at times gently and violently, much like the poem - an...

Captivating
Thank you, Cobi!! I’d love to hear your take on it one day
sounds a bit as though Eisler became a Scriabinist for a while! He is an interesting polystylist.
Thanks for listening. This does have quartal passages and many interesting colors. I think he might have picked those things up from Schoenberg's First Chamber Symphony, but who knows what other music he studied?
Check out my recording of Schoenberg's Op. 33 as well!
this is so preciousss
Thanks! Yes, I was trying to channel earnest teenager Johann Sebastian ☺️
It's been a joy to behold your mature performances since 2008 when you drew 600 attendees to Sacramento's popular Music At Noon concert series. Your fans at Westminster wish you good health and much creative joy for many years to come.
