Melinda VanRy - Better With Art
США
Добавлен 15 окт 2020
I'm Melinda. I make art. And I'm here to encourage you to reclaim your creativity and practice creative self-care.
I for the most part ignored my need to make art for YEARS, despite knowing what a good effect it had on my mental and emotional health. Choosing to make art-making a regular practice was transformative. Now I share what I've found, and continue to find.

Only have a few minutes but curious about watercolor? This one's for you!
I didn't have time to finish beautifying last week's chaos and make it into a video for you this week, but that's okay. We can come back to it next week and get a little watercolor practice with a bit of color theory while practicing creative self-care with art-making in the meantime!
Welcome to BETTER WITH ART! I’m Melinda and I’m here to encourage you to reclaim your creativity and practice creative self-care with weekly small-art prompts that can be done in the privacy of an art journal or on paper if you don’t have one.

We're making marks, tearing paper, creating texture, and smearing color for creative self-care. Welcome to BETTER WITH ART! I’m Melinda and I’m here to encourage you to reclaim your creativity and practice creative self-care with weekly small-art prompts that can be ...

Want to power up your creativity? Here's one of my favorite tricks to let go of perfectionism!
Просмотров 27321 день назад
This week it's about LETTING GO OF PERFECTION, and speaking of embracing imperfection, let's quick hit some things I forgot to mention in this video: YES, blind contour drawing is supposed to involve not lifting the pen off the paper, but I got into those fins and spots and forgot! And, Welcome to BETTER WITH ART! I'm Melinda and I'm here to encourage you to reclaim your creativity and practice...

...Nice...
...Nice, I just picked up watercolor & it's a whole new world, thanks for this idea. I am still trying to get over the "STOP! Like I can control the magic happening I don't seem to know there isn't any way to fix... what is really Ok!??! Last night I went from awesome, headstrong into a crime scene! poor tree, LOL!...
Still a great creative self care project for this week thank you for sharing ❤
Thank you. Sometimes quick and easy is all we can manage.
Thanks for this video, Melinda❤ I am perfectionist and always waiting for a right time for inspiration. I strongly feel the need to be free and break my own rules. This video serves that exact purpose to break myself free and enjoy what i am about to do. Thanks again for inspiring all of us out here❤
Sometimes we need to break ourselves free from trying to make something specific and even figuring out what that is, to just make. Simply making what might look like a mess can be just what we need.
I love this. I live with chronic pain and my doc recently recommended doodling or sketchbook keeping for pain and the subsequent anxiety control. Love your approach 🎉
Thank you. I'm sorry to hear you live with chronic pain. I'm glad your doc suggested art-making. It has helped me through some rough times. And those moments and stretches of time caught up in flow, where everything else fades, are wonderful.
Thank you Melinda. Subscribed.
Welcome! 😊
Whew. That was stressful
😆
Can't believe some people's comments 😠
Even the negative comments help grow my reach,. 👍 I don't take it personally or as a legitimate response to what I do. 🤷♀️ Art is subjective; not everyone will like it. And I can't imagine having a life so small and dull as to make a habit of taking time to make obnoxious comments on people's videos. People can be jerks, especially when it's not face-to-face, but pathetically negative to strangers from behind basically anonymous user names. Thanks for not being a jerk. 😊
love the idea and the art
Thanks!
Worst "art" ever 👍
But it got your attention enough to add me to the list of people you wasted time being negative to, so there's that.
i love it
With the pathetically obnoxious comments on this short that I may or may not delete, I'm honestly not sure at the moment whether you"re being obnoxiously sarcastic or mean what you say, but I can thank you for helping me grow my reach either way. 😆👍
@@melindavanry i mean it, i dont understand why people hate it but i think its pretty :D
Honey, these look terrible 🙏
Thanks for taking the time to help grow my reach with your obnoxious waste of time being a jerk to strangers on the Internet, Sweetheart. 👍
Very nice print too 👌
Thanks! I'll be sharing the process soon!
This is a fantastic video! Doodling is a lot of fun. I enjoy playing around with no sense of anything being at stake with it. Just the pure joy of the feeling of seeing what happens while enjoying the tactile sensations of whatever media I'm using.
YES! Which makes it so good for our mental and emotional health! And, thank you.
Have you had any luck using contact paper for larger images?
I don't recall thinking of trying that, but now I need to. I actually just went to look for a partial roll I know I have somewhere but couldn't find it. I will definitely try this. It's supposed to work.
@melindavanry I found another person on YT who has used it successfully, so I hope you have fun experimenting with it when you find your partial roll. :)
@ Thanks for sharing!
Doodling is like thought mapping. Thank you for this important reminder. Your channel is such an emotional saviour!!! Thank you!!!
Doodling is a great way to process our thoughts and practice creative self-care. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
🥰😍🤩Amazing!
I was surprised by and love what can be done with a mark-making brush so simple to make.
Sweeeeeet ❣️
@@sherrigittel4623 Definitely something to keep experimenting with.
What's not to love about interference paint it's always so pretty
It's relatively new fun for me. I'm looking forward to getting even more interesting effects.
@melindavanry Yes if you're anything like me I have so many ideas and so not enough time to create everything that I want to create
@@bonniedahl3156Exactly!
Your voice is relaxing ❤
I'm glad you find it relaxing.😊
I still think they're nice, especially the first one.
Thanks! I have fun.
🤤 I luuuuuuuvvvvv ink! Such a lovely sketch tool! Experiment with different types too!
I'd love to. 😊
Yeah well yellow or gold and black are always winter combinations
I feel so inspired to try this! It's beautiful
Thank you! It's a surprisingly therapeutic process.
Love it. Encouraaging. Thank you.
You're welcome, and thank you. We all need it. Enjoy the process!
I love the idea of the drying rack.
@@marygartner9864 So convenient!
I recently got into fountain pens. It was very interesting because I really don't write much. I just came to the realization that I love putting ink on paper. I so much appreciate this project.
Simply putting ink down on paper can be surprisingly therapeutic. Enjoy!
Thanks for posting. I very much appreciate your insight and enjoy listening to your thought process as you proceed through the project. This looks like a fun project for me as I'm entering the _learning, practicing, experimenting_ phase of watercolors and urban sketching. 😀
Have fun!
You are si good at art
❤❤❤
Like the doodles we would make while on the phone book, waiting on hold. How many pieces of art went into the landfill year after year. Glad you're bringing this back.
It doesn't have to be great art for the making of it to be worthwhile.
I did something like this the other day, kind of unconsciously, because I had a blank piece of paper (the other side of a not-so-great photocopy) in my hand. I think I was dismayed at my old printer's lack of great performance--again--and didn't want to waste the paper. The act of drawing calmed me down while I figured out a better way to do what I wanted to get done. I could have shopped for a new printer but I didn't. 😊
I'm definitely a doodler who finds it helps me calm down and gain clarity. It's like my brain needs something else to do so it can focus on a problem without focusing on a problem. Kind of figure it out while it's not overwhelmed thinking too hard about it or being upset about it.
Thank you for this. I think we can forget how transformative making things can be for our mental and physical health.
It's far too easy to forget and minimize the importance of creativity to our health. I feel like it's part of my purpose to remind people.
I LOVE this!
@@barbaracimini1447 Thank you!.I need to make art and encourage others to.

No matter the art materials I love the process more than results. Primary, I am a photographer.
Exercising creativity is therapeutic. A few years ago taking pictures was so helpful for me. Being able to focus on what I could frame with the camera helped with the overwhelm and hopelessness.
What is your tissue paper source?
I do use medical exam paper now, but when I filmed this I was almost exclusively using inexpensive gift-wrapping tissue that can be purchased many places. I still prefer it in many ways.
Thank you so much!
You're welcome! Have fun making art!
Great idea.
Neat
Thanks
TY for this.Nice.
Translucent layers are so much fun to work with. 🙂
Do you have a tutorial for this tissue paper?
I do not. Yet.
What the heck did I just see?
Red, I guess.
Well, if nothing else, something that caught your attention enough to waste time being a jerk about. So thanks for helping grow my reach.
Very observant. Kudos.
❤❤❤
😊
Thanks for holding the video at the end so people can look more closely 🙂
That IS something I need to better with. I'm glad you enjoyed a closer look.
😎
This is important now, and we are Really going to need this in 2025.
Yes, it's always important. And you're going to be okay. We never know what a year will hold. But it may not be as bad as you fear. Whatever happens there's always beauty to find regardless of what's going on in the world. Keep looking for it. Keep practicing creative self-care. Keep being the good you want to see.
Thank you. I find it easier to show emotions through art instead of words.
Words are important, but, yes, art is wonderful when they won't suffice, or are hard to say, or when we're not even sure what the words should be. I'm glad you have art as an outlet.
Just pick your glass up and you'll be able to see through both it and your plate to align with your other prints.
Yes, that's the third method I demonstrate in the video. I picked up just the gel plate to print on the page, then placed the journal on the gel plate to print, and last picked up the glass with the plate on it. Yes, overall, the third worked best.
