Funny thing about Joseph Rampal students, they all have a crooked left side posture on the headjoint... they sound good, but as a teacher I always correct the students to be more like in the middle...

Beautiful performance, Bravo! I couldn't help notice that the rendered pitch is a semi-tone higher than printed. Is the audio playback fast, or is it intentional? Thank you! Looking forward to listen to the whole discussion...

I'm very interested to hear you speak about hearing before playing, and how so much classical flute training effectively excluded use of the ear. I'm mainly an organist, and I'm becoming more and more aware of how most organists effectively exclude the use of ears in practice and playing (Charles-Marie Widor complained "les organistes ne s'écoutent jamais!" -- and now the problem is even worse than it was in his day). Of all instruments, the organ lends itself most easily to playing without use of the ears, because it's so mechanical in its operation: the player doesn't control intonation, and color and dynamics are varied through choice of registers or other purely mechanical controls. But, come to think of it. in a certain sense, woodwinds are being treated more mechanically in recent years, what with instruments increasingly built in perfect equal temperament, requiring little or no compensation on the player's part, often at the expense of dynamic nuance or tone color variation.

It took me too long to realize this was a traverso. Gorgeous sound. I like the Sarabande reprise, but with proper theatrical dynamics, it can be made prettier in its short form. But for the Allemande, that F flat, mistake or not, is the most important note in the piece. Like a pebble thrown into a pond, it immediately changes the surface and then it ripples out into bigger and bigger movements. Turning it into an E robs the second part of its cause.
