Fascinating, thank you. Went Waialua High 60's but no idea of this history. We lived across from Meadow Gold Dairy and remember hearing the sugar cane trucks busy all night long and the smell of burning sugar.

This is so fascinating. It is helping me research my family history. I know my Great Grandfather worked at the sugar factory here. Thank you for this work!

I remember a story my Dad told me about when he was stationed at the army barracks in Hilo: When the '46 Tsunami was coming in, the base was only notified by a small boy who had seen the wave coming in and was running into town and barracks trying to warn everyone he met, so some of those stationed in the barracks quickly climbed onto the roofs of the buildings on base, and watched the massive wave come in sweeping all before it far inland. When the wave rolled onto the base grounds it was as high as the roofs, even lifting up some of the buildings. When it swept past the roof my father clung to, a great big fish swam past him and an army buddy of his, and as it swam past them his army buddy, being a fine fisherman, instinctively tried to grab it, but it's fins cut into his hand and arm so he had to let it go. Luckily, they both survived the experience. My Dad, born & raised in Hawaii, served during the war, then married my Mom also born & raised in Hawaii with inherent roots in Hana, Maui, and they had 8 children after moving to the mainland.
