I was there aged just 17 having been a huge fan since '84. It was my first (and last) time seeing them live. One of the most crushing disappointments of my life!

Not my recollection. This was standard set list and length for this tour (see other recordings), they just didn't have much material. Crowd was enthusiastic and there was the usual stage invasion for the encores.

Thanks for posting this. I was at the Lyceum Theatre that night mainly to see Devoto as I was a huge fan of Magazine but was pleased to see this new supporting band and its singer with all those flowers in his hands. I honestly didn't really understand how good they actually were at the time, but wrote the name "The Smiths" down and bought their records when they were released later on. Great memories !

*I remember this gig like it was yesterday. The crowd was as 'reverently rabid' as most Smiths concerts mostly 'descended' into. It cost only a mere 30p and left a wonderfully indelible memory of one of the greatest gigs I've ever been to. The Smiths are IT*

*The Smiths were such an amazing live band. Saw them 3 times, twice in 85 and then 86. Morrissey weas extremely charismatic and coy (he made that very possible). I like the lyrics of 'Barbarism Begins at Home', but the faux-funk they try is adequate, I just don't really think it's their forte. Great band, though. They'll assuredly be forever recognised as one of the 20th century's greatest ever musical combos. Morrissey/Marr are a perfect duo*
