Matt Learns Cello
США
Добавлен 9 окт 2013
I'm learning how to play the cello. Sometimes it can be daunting to keep up the motivation to practice, and I find that looking back on old videos and recordings helps a lot with motivation - "wow, look how far I've come!"
Cello isn't my first instrument. I played electric guitar in metal bands starting in high school. I started taking lessons in 2016, and stopped in 2018. I picked it back up in 2023, and now I'm going to start documenting my journey.

[2025-01-14] Vivaldi Double Cello Concerto in G minor
Woops! Last video got out of sync with the audio. It's not a perfect rendition but I'm pretty happy with it.

This feels much better! Recorded with my AKG C214 this time.

I learned the first half of this a long time ago, but I've been working on the second half and polishing up the first part. The intonation isn't great here, which is weird, because it's mostly in first position, and a comfortable key, at that. I'm going to re-record this and get a bit more focused time on it.

I’ve been working on this almost all year on the side. My practice time has been mostly dominated by orchestra rehearsal, but I can’t stop with Bach. Intonation needs work, but I’m decently happy with the tone quality and phrasing for now.

I could have sworn that I recorded this already! Evidently not. I'm a big fan of the Sarabandes in the Bach cello suites. Beautiful and resonant. But that also makes them hard - the smallest mistake stands out like a sore thumb.

This is the piece I've been working on the most recently. The gigues are so much fun to play and quite challenging.

I've been working on this one for months. I feel a tremendous sense of loss and hope in this music, which is part of what has kept me practicing it so much.
[2024-01-27] Gigue in G Major from Bach Cello Suite 1

A bit of extracurricular learning here. The gigues may be my favorite movements in the cello suites, close with the Sarabandes. I'm interested in eventually doing an arrangement of them to fit with the Celtic jig form, so learning them is the first step. There's much work to be done here - the shifts and key changes make intonation challenging, and I'd like to do better with my dynamics.

Recorded the first page of Squire's Tarantella. It's fast and fun and there's so much to work on.

New strings! I was given a set of used Magnacores from my cello rental shop in July after expressing an interest in different strings - however, I had already bought a set of Dominant Pros from Shar Music. The Magnacores sounded great for a while, but were getting a bit - idk - harsh? I tried a cello that had Rondos and really loved the tone, which reminded me that I had the Dominants at home. ...

Book five of Suzuki method. Intonation, dynamics, tone quality. Some of these shifts feel impossible, and then I nail it once, and then they feel merely difficult. I’m getting better with intonation, but I think I’m starting to use a drone as a bit of a crutch. I need to pay closer attention to tuning notes properly when there’s a stretch without a reference.

These shifts are hard. Some sour notes. Trying to figure out a good balance between tone and volume for the dynamics.

That slow tempo syncopation is downright sloppy! I hereby sentence myself to ten thousand years metronome dungeon no trials. This was last weeks assignment. I didn’t record it because my family was in town. I’m currently working on the last allegro, which I will hopefully have down well enough to record next week.

After last week, my teacher was good on the technical aspect, but wanted to hear better dynamics and tone. Armed with exercises and a focus, I practiced that a bunch, and you can sort of hear a difference.

Bravo! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Very nice!
Nice work!!!
Wonderful. What a lovely thing to have done in your lifetime.
Found you through Reddit! Great work. Let's team up sometime.
That would be great! I'd be happy to work together
🥰
I'm curious: Does your left hand feel stiff/tired when you play? Also do you find it hard to keep your thumb under the 2nd finger on the left hand?
Yup! I have a habit of keeping my hand and fingers perpendicular to the neck, which develops a lot of tension. I've been adjusting my posture since this video to encourage a more angled and relaxed approach.
That is perfect, you want the hand to angle back towards the scroll. You can actually do a little test - when your fingers are perpendicular, if you stretch with your index and pinky (as if you were doing an extended fingering), you'll notice the two fingers fight each other and hurt. If your hand is angled back, you'll notice that the extended fingers stop fighting each other and actually share the same resources.
The other thing to note is that when the hand is angled, the fingertips are more parallel with the floor. Because the string should be held down by natural back and arm weight (never hand squeezing), and gravity points down at the floor, you get a more direct and solid weight transfer into the fingertips.
This is pretty good! How long have you been playing for?
Thank you! I've been taking lessons consistently since March of 2023, and had taken lessons for maybe 1-2 years in 2016-2018.
also, you're going for that late 90's early 00's Emo look, huh? 😏
Haha! The eternal struggle of wanting to grow my hair out, being too lazy to get it cut, and not liking the awkward stage...
reminds me of Over the Garden Wall
Listening to this: ruclips.net/video/9kgRHg3TaAI/видео.html and yeah! I can hear it.
