Hi, I just purchased the light meter. I don't understand well, when I change either shutter speed or aperture priority I believe that the exposure meter should calculate either one or the other, but this doesn't happen.
Thanks so much , now I know that HP5 is my choice . I do not like how strong is contrast in 400 TX - which I ordered just before I started to watch your video ! Quick question, what would you say would be most suitable for portraits - i will use small soft boxes as I want to do head shots mainly - school type photos.
Unfortunately I have learned first hand it will not break the concrete
Such a great comparison! Thank you! The Tri-X remains my favourite.
The MB-21 grip (needs 6 batteries) makes it an F4s they were sold mainly in the US. The MB-20(needs 4 batteries) came on bodies outside the US. Though, there is no structural difference between the f4/S/E or no distinctive badging. This also is the reason, regardless of the model, they're all called the F4.
Thanks. My favourite camera. You can use new "G" lenses without aperture rings if you select S or P modes. You can also rewind manually by moving the R1 lever and then using the crank. Helpful if you want to leave the leader out.
very intertesting. thank you
Hi, I just got my camera today for £20. Looking in the manual it does say somethng about the orange dot. I am not so tefamiliar with the terms. Would you explai what it means llease? There are two types of lenses: number one, this is the type of lens I have: X-Fujinon DM Lenses {Lenses with an Orange FUJICA AX-3 Mark on the Aperture Scale) These are capable of full aperture metering and programmed, shutter-preferred, and aperture-preferred automatic exposure. However, your Fujica AX-3 is provided for full aperture metering and aperture-preferred automatic exposure only "Do NOt set the aperture ring to the orange mark" please explain. thank you maybe a detailed video for beginers
great video I'm going to buy this now, had serious doubts. Fun watch tx
Nice Video! Which one has the finest Grain?
Great video!!! I really like it, but were you exposed to the shadows or how did you metered the light with this light meter? All the best
Dude, thank you so much for this! I've been getting into film photography, and my friend gave me this model. Since I had only previously used a Canon Rebel GII, I was completely lost😅 Because of your video I am now using AND understanding my camera and getting some great footage! Thanks again so much!!!
That's awesome. I'm so happy it helped you understand your camera.
Really loved the idea and execution behind this video. I've always wondered how well it simulates the filmstock. Where was that desert camp location? I'd love to camp somewhere similar!
Thanks so much. Happy you liked it. We were camping out in the west desert of Utah in an area just north west of the city of Delta. Near Notch Peak.
@@kevikronicles Appreciate you sharing! I'll have to check it out next time I'm in Utah
How did you manage moving there? Like did you have work lined up??
Yeah my girlfriend got a job as a math professor here. So I found an English teaching job in order to get a visa. It was a very complicated and frustrating process. But I’m stoked I’m here now.
Cool film demo. ... Too cool for a bone dome shield? Obit: "He only paid $2 for film, but couldn't spend anymore for his cranium."
Haha this was a few days before I got my helmet delivered. No worries the cranium is all safe now on the scoot.
The AE-1 Program was my first camera. I still have it, as well as his older sister the AE-1 and about a dozen other 35mm slrs and rangefinders. It is still my go to grab and go camera.
Like... I'd like to try it, but I really don't think you would send me this film to czech republic xDDD Overall I really like experimenting with film, even though the results can be disappointing, that's why I have a few expired stuff in my fridge :D
What film did you use ? Thank you
Where can one buy this kind of film roll? Is there a link I missed?
Is this china?
Indeed it is.
@@kevikronicles No politics- How do you like living there! It sure is pretty. Is that Chongqing?
I only recently got into film photography. I swore by digital growing up, I had tons of digital cameras. Various chargers, cables, cases, just laying everywhere. Well, I'm not entirely sure why, but over the last few months, I just felt this pull to ditch digital, and go full analog. I picked up a Pentax K1000 for 100 bucks with multiple lenses and filters, plus case, and I can't put the thing down. I'm shooting anything I can get my hands on. Black and white, color, expired, fresh, Kodak, Fuji, nameless, I just want to buy up anything I can! I even ended up buying this bulk shipment of "metal can" 35mm film on Ali Express. Should be arriving in the next month or so. It's hard to explain, but your video, the beginning, even though it's meant to be a joke, is exactly how I feel when I receive a new order of prints, and film. I'm really glad I stumbled onto your channel. Subscribed, liked, and I hope to keep watching you and your catalogue grow. Great shots. I love that the film wasn't "perfect." That's the look that I adore when I get my prints back.
I've always hated the extreme bokeh thats so common in modern photography, it's always felt so artificial to me, but not on this film.
Yeah not a lot of bokeh on this one. Just lots of weird colors.
Fantastic video! This will blow up, mark my words
Thanks! I'm hoping it does. My last few videos have completely flopped.
Yo, good video! I'm itching to try shooting or recording something on actual film and it was nice to see a literal example of how the film itself impacts an image. I do have some assorted feedback: 1. I'd love to see more medium shots of you speaking to keep interest up. The close up of your arms/hands holding the film could definitely use a break and I think in general shots of people talking is interesting if not overused and interspersed throughout. GXAce is a pretty good example of this on a pacing level 2. I'd also love for you to go more into detail on some of your opinions. You mention liking or disliking the sky in some shots, I think you're mostly basing your opinion on the technical color reproduction but still, it'd be nice to know for sure and overall just expressing your opinion with some fancy/flashy words. ActionButton video game reviews is my go to for fancy word usages 3. I like the drawn lines pointing out and illustrating your points, but them being wiggly was distracting 4. This one is last but maybe the most important, the bass in the last quarter of the video was so intense I had to turn the youtube volume down by half. I don't know of a way to avoid that happening in the future, just letting you know Overall this was super sick, you got some great shots in here. I'm subbing and looking forward to seeing more!
Bro! Thank you so much for this comment. I seriously appreciate the feedback and will definitely try to use it for my next videos. This was super helpful and well thought out. Thanks for the sub!
Was there anything printed around the frame counters on the edges of the film? It looks like expired film, wondering if it's old Kodak stock. Also, what did you use to scan it? Some of those photos might look like that because the scanner had no idea how to set the white balance maybe?
These are some good thoughts. According to the translation on the listing the film was supposedly produced in 2024. There was nothing on the edges of the film, and I have basically no information on what the lab used to scan the film haha. There are a million different variable for why it looks so wonky. Thanks for watching and i really appreciate your comment.
Analogue transparencies is pure... if there are not well balanced aperture and speed you miss the shot. In digital the processor compensates lights and shadows... so the picture is not pure real... Kind regards, Eduardo T. Devereux.
Thanks my friend!
The video was qutie clear and informative! I recently purchased this camera and I am running in to an issue with the shutter speed meter that you see in the view finder (the red LED lights). The camera always shows a blinking light at either 1000 or 2s, indicating that the image will be over or underexposed. I play around with the exposure dial and the shutter speed, but the LED light does not move. Could I be doing something wrong, or is this may an indicator of a damaged light meter? Thanks for any ideas you may have!
That’s a tough one. But i sometime run into the same issue. Is your shutter speed dial on AE or AEL? is your battery dying? Sometime mine shows the blinking light but also a solid light at my selected shutter speed and i just shoot it anyway and they have all come out fine. Here is a link the cameras manual. Maybe there is something in there. www.butkus.org/chinon/fujica/fujica_ax-3/fujica_ax-3.pdf
I got the Electro 35 GSN as my first rangefinder, currently halfway through my 1st roll and I'm so excited to see the results! Yours came out great, really love them.
Thanks so much my friend. Hope you enjoy yours.
Just bought one as my first ever film camera from japan i have very good knowledge of how to use digital cameras and so i wanted a fully manual with high control on the shooting camera that is on the more affordable side and the f4 looked to me as the best choice i can make.
Glad you get to see a different viewpoint of what China is like. It's a complicated country for sure but filled with friendly people, great food, and interesting culture.
00:22 :(
I know that each film has special something, but most of the differences shown here are to be mitigated, either by different developers / developing techniques, or even better, in the post processing. WET post processing. BTW, all those cameras used are OLD, and different, made by different camera makers, so there's a possibility that some exposure times on some of those cameras are not accurate. Not all the time. Just saying... In regards to films, I'm a bit biased. I've never used Tri-X, ever. When I've started in photography, and later professionally while using film, Tri-X wasn't available in my country. Unlike Ilford's HP5. And later when Kentmere showed up I didn't care anymore. Course for me, HP5 was always a king...
bro your faux humility isnt fooling anyone, its pretty obvious your full of yourself
1) setting the right white balance on the digital camera to match the WB of the film is quite important for comparison between those two - there's no auto WB setting for film. In this case that should be about 5300K if I'm not mistaken... Deespite that, (slide) film can still turn out quite weird... 2) Getting the right exposure on slide film is crucial. Period. Or make bracketing just to be safe. Film is expensive for bracketing? This is a comparison, I don't care. Or use external light meter for both, with calculation for difference in ISO of course. 3) (14:05) those lenses and formats are totally different, so... Nevertheless, like for the dog 🐶
9:38 i totally disagree. The film is Miles ahead
i love your video!! really what i want to see!❤❤
Velvia is a daylight film so it has 5500K white balance (this is not quite correct but anyway) which explains why it looks warmer on the first image. It will warm up everything on a cloudy day.
Hi Kevi, Cool video, a question? Did you set up a custom white balance to digital to 5600K? as films were calibrated for that colour temperature. If you didn't that would give you more accurate results in comparison like this.
Thanks i'm happy you liked it. Yeah I had my white balance locked for daylight. I can't remember the exact Kelvin temperature but i think it was close to 5600K.
I shot Fujifilm almost daily throughout the '90s. One of my clients had an account at a different lab than the one I usually went to. After years of experience, I knew how to set my exposure for Fuji’s slide films. Until I went to the other lab and it didn’t expose or look the same. The ISO was more accurate to the box speed, and the contrast was lower. Turns out my main lab used Kodak chemistry and the other lab used Fujifilm chemistry. It makes a big difference. What brand of chemistry was the film processed in? Were all the digital images shot at a pre-set daylight white balance to mach the locked-in WB of the film? Fascinating comparison. Hope you do more.
Glad you liked it. The lab i used developed these in Fujifilm chemicals. And yes the digital was locked in to a constant white balance in order to try and match the velvia colors as closely as possible.
Really cool comparison. I personally prefer the way saturation was handled with the film on highly saturated subjects like the red flower.
Thanks im happy you liked it. Yeah the flower image came out great im super happy with it.
Film v digital comparisons are utterly useless without giving further details of the development, scanning, and editing process involved. There is no 'Velvia' look - you could give the same developed roll to two different scanners/editors and they would give you different results.
Thanks for this! The velvia simulation is too saturated IMO. Not one of their better simulations. Astia, Nostalgic Negative and Kodachrome are much better simulations for getting that retro film look IMO, though a lot of the differences (particularly around sunsets and sunflares) I think had to do with other factors like the lenses you were using. Also the shade you throw at LA... lol true
HAHA for real. LA is a dumpster fire of a city. And you're absolutely right the sunflares and other parts of the image have nothing to do with the actual comparison. I personally don't like the Velvia simulation on the X100V. Ive got some Kodachrome and Portra simulations that i created myself that i absolutely love. I don't know if you shoot Fujifilm but if you're interested i can share the settings with you.
@@kevikronicles Thanks! Yeah, I imagine you're using the ones that are on FUjiXWeekly? I've tried a few of them out on my XT-50 but I usually just stick with the native simulations. This was a great video though and would love to see similar comparisons with some of the other film settings.
Was surprised the film looked better in almost every image. The film simulation nails the magenta blues that Velvia gives you but the greens are too saturated and I much prefer the draker and warmer/yellower greens on the film.
Agreed!
Did you messing with the settings white balance shadow highlights in camera to match the film
I kept the WB on the digital to daylight balanced. and didn't change any of the shadow or highlight settings.
Contrast and sharpness also depends on the lens so if you want to be objective you have to compare images taken with the same lens.
This is true. Guess i need to by two more Nikon F4's
Hey, what lens do you have? I’m thinking of buying the a used AE-1 but it doesn’t come with the lens
I have a few lenses for my AE-1. I absolutely love the 50mm F1.8 its crazy beautiful and super cheap. I also love my 85mm f1.8 Its a little pricer but portraits are great with it. Then i have a 28mm F2.8 and 200mm F4. I would suggest starting with the 50mm
The K400 seems to be nice for portrait. Hp5 is my actual favorite. Nice for architecture
Yeah agreed. HP5 does great for architecture.
Great stuff as always. Cool seeing all the artwork, but I think my favorite shots here are the industrial ones, especially 7:18. It looks like you found yourself a good lab!
Oh I love that image as well. Yeah I’m pretty happy with the lab results. Their scans are a bit small but they did a great job for the price. I’m going to be checking out another lab this weekend and see how they do.
nice overview, i own 3 of these cameras and they are great but im taking them nowhere near water!
Fair enough! I took mine pretty deep into the ocean on a surfing trip in nicaragua and it got slammed by the waves over and over. Seemed to survive just fine.
My copy survived years of white water kayaking for many years in the late nineties. Still works flawlessly to this day. Took it to a beer festival last night shooting expired film.
