You use 80/20 bronze 12/53 in LL16 right? I wonder what kind of Elixir in LL16 when its brand new? A phosphor?
@@mauricedumlao5871 Yamaha use 80/20 bronze 12/53 on there guitars to the best of my knowledge
@@gavincarrollmusic7401 thank you I purchased LL16 D instead of Fg5 because no Fg5 satin is available. all are Gloss finish. I think 2024 is the last production of Fg5 matte finish. And will upgrade ebony pin bone nut and bone saddle :) thank you for your reviews about yamaha. Happy new year
@mauricedumlao5871 your very welcome brother, congratulations on your new purchase I hope it brings you many years of joy , happy new year 🎉
I have both of these guitars and I agree that they are both fantastic as good as almost any guitar I've played. I also have a 1978 Martin D18 of which I am the original owner. Of the three, it's a personal preference. The Martin is between the 2 Yamahas. It's brighter than the FG5 and a bit bolder than the ll16. For giggles I bought a Yamaha FG830. I looks very similar to the LL16 and to my unbelieving ears it sounds and plays on par with the other three guitars for about $325. The FG830 is not just a great budget guitar, it;s a great guitar. I should probably make a video about it
@@DavidShapero That's crazy when you think of it but I believe everything you said , I have been watching videos on the FG800 and from what my ears are telling me it sounds incredible, given how cheap it is aswel is outrageous ! Yamaha are doing it right 👍
Hi, can you recommend the new pins that fit the ll16 please?
@@MegaEldude I just bought a cheap set and sanded them down to fit
Just sold my FG5 last month in order to purchase the new FG9, could not be happier with it and wouldn’t trade it for the world. At the same time cannot stress enough how nice of a guitar the fg5 is, especially for the price. Such a warm sounding guitar, it really does sound vintage. Was surprised Yamaha never used a Torrified top on the FG9 and would love to know how it would sound. If I had to pick one I’d still choose my FG9 all day long as I find it’s more versatile. Thanks for the video, was the exact comparison I was looking for when I came time to make my decision, cheers.
@@erikjakobsson5128 Yep I agree no doubt the FG5 is a stunning guitar but the FG9 is something special ! Enjoy your FG9 👌
They both sound amazing. They have their own sound, very different from Martin, Gibson, Guild, etc. At that quality level, which is high in the FG5 let alone the FG9 it just comes down to personal preference. The sound is full and robust. Should be even better once broken in. I have a owned a D18 back in the day- apples and oranges. Not on quality mind you, just sound profile. Certainly these are worthy of consideration. Enjoyed your playing!
I think the only things this video convinced for me is I now need both of these. I've been between fg3/5 and the ll16. yikes.
I have the FSX5 and it is quite nice. I yave played LL16 but like the FSX5 better.
FG9 is better with indian rosewood back but twice price sorry
@@gibsonj45hu Don't be sorry it's just a matter of opinion! I like the FG9M that's why I bought it! Same price here in Ireland 👍
@@gavincarrollmusic7401 FG5 same price is in Irland the FG9M ( mahagoni back ) ? You are a lucky man !
I think the five piece neck it what interests me the most on the LL. Otherwise, I like the FG.
@@jimsteele2072 the ll16 is ridiculous value for money they are definitely one of the best guitars in the world in it's price category , incredible guitars
Sounds fabulous! Both sound great. I love my Yamaha LL-TA sound, seems better than all other guitars I've tried, and it's like 1 k new, you can't beat that... Well, in fact if you want an Adirondack Top and Rosewood B&S, check out my Recording Kings videos on my channel... You might be surprised... Astonishing value around 600 Euros and sounds like 3 k...
@@77guitarts22 I have been tempted to buy a recording king several times they do sound incredible and for half nothing! Some great guitars out there now it's hard choose
FG9 sounds cleaner and clearer

I think they made a design mistake with the pure maple center stripe. For this amount of money they should have used the same japanese rope patterned stripe design from the top binding. Just for the beauty and as well for a consistent corporate design art to mark IT as there speciality and identity design mark.

Great vid, cheers. Really good sound too with that 57 👌
Yes thanks. Very different and it's easy to see why you have both.
I can't seem to find the difference online! An FG5 seems a lot lower priced than an FG5r/FG5m - but they all seem solids so why the price difference?
@@RadarsRadicalRides do you mean FG9r/FG9M? Both the FG5 and FG9 are all solid but with the FG9 your getting Adirondack spruce top and a bolt on neck plus the over all construction of the guitar is higher quality
@@gavincarrollmusic7401 I think I've got myself all confused there! It seems to be a £2000 difference between the 5 and the 9 which threw me. I have a hummingbird which TBH I've never got on with that well, and I actually prefer playing my old FG750S. So I'm juggling between the D-18 of something like the FG9m. Any thoughts? I suppose that the Martin would make a better 'heirloom' to my daughter but I won't make that the driving force if the Yam plays and sounds better.
@@RadarsRadicalRides My opinion on that is the FG9M is far superior to a standard Martin d18 , I would even prefer the FG5 to a standard d18 but that's just me . Although the FG9 is expensive but it really does hang with guitars worth 8 or 9 thousand euros, they are built to last aswel
@@gavincarrollmusic7401 I can easily believe you! There's a reason that I have Yamaha instruments and motorcycles! And I'll be honest with you I haven't been that impressed with either my Gibson or HD ;-)
Own an FGX5, love it. Not sure if or when I’d be able to spring for the $$ of an FG9 though.
Relax and enjoy which great sounding Instrument you already have. Tame your mind and your GAS!🤔✍️🚔🙏🎸🎸🎸
I have an FG5. It is the only “big” guitar I own. I absolutely love it, but I’m more of a small body guitar player, preferably with short scale to help my old fingers a little. I am planning to buy an FS9-R after I’ve saved a few more pennies.
@@richardstones6445 the FS9 sound incredible, I am more of a dread guy but I wouldn't mind picking one up sometime 😀
Hey mate, got a fg5 ordered, just wondering what pick up you installed? Thanks
Hey dude I use the LR Baggs anthem it's my favourite pickup, the LR Baggs hi fi pickup also looks great but I have not tried it yet
@@gavincarrollmusic7401 Cheers Gavin, did you install ? Pretty easy ? I sold my Martin d10 for the fg5, I hope Iv made the right decision lol
@@dylan3058 I had my guitar tech drill out the endpin and hole for piezo under the saddle then I installed the pickup, with the hi fi you would only need to drill out the endpin it's very straightforward to install. Really think you will be happy with the FG5 brother they are awesome
@@gavincarrollmusic7401 nice one man.
Sound class did you buy in ireland.that sound hole looks larger .
Thanks bro both were baught on line . Standard sound hole not modified or anything
I've owned an FG5 for a couple of years. I guess based on this review, I'll stop looking for an upgrade to the FG9. I like the sound projection from the 9 but the 5 has all of the tone qualities I look for. The FG9 seems to me to be a bluegrass instrument. I'm more 60's folk.
FG5 is sweet mellow tone to my ears and the FG9M is just a power house , both cracking guitars brother I think the FG9 will open up and get sweeter in time tho
Weird but my FG5 doesn't look like yours. Different rosette and pick guard .
It's a stranded FG5 but I removed the fake ebony pickguard because it was noisy with a pick , it's just a sticker but underneath is a stranded plastic pickguard. You will need to remove the glue once you peel it back it took quite a bit of elbow grease
The deep tone of the fg9 is unbelievable!
She's a keeper 😁
Yes, but they are more clearly an with more definition and articiulation sounding guitars. They do not have the Martin vintage oomph with the" built in loudness button" ✍️ for more upper bass warnth.
I too bought a FG5 over a D18. While the lower price was nice, it was not a factor in my decision. The FG5 just had a nicer tone than the D18 and it also played better - I really don't like the Martin modified low oval necks. If Yamaha would make a FG9 with the ARE treatment coupled with the look of the FG5, I would buy it in a heartbeat. Not a fan of the FG9 fret markers...they're classy and nice, but just not for me.
Yeah I totally get you , the FG5 looks vintage and is a cracking guitar I won't be parting with mine it's a quality instrument. That said the FG9 is a level above and it would want to be for the money, it's not cheap by any means . That Adirondack top really puts some power behind it aswel . Its basically like an FG5 on steroids
Can’t speak to the FG9 but I own the FS5 and love it. I got to guitar center a couple times since and the only guitar I ever found that I liked better was the FG5. I’m looking at getting the FG5 now and possibly a ll36 or ll26 for something in rosewood
You just can't go wrong with Yamaha brother
Enjoyed the comparison, such beautiful sounding guitars. I was set on a D-18 too but after tons of research i've just bit the bullet and ordered a FG9M! Only thing that I'm anxious about is that everywhere I'm reading that they recommend only using the light strings on them, have you been sticking to this or got any experience putting mediums on it? Cheers!
I play 12s but honestly I don't buy into it being an issue! The most important thing is to get the guitar set up to your own strings , once you do that it shouldn't be an issue brother
I have the FG9M and have played D’Addario phosphor bronze strings my whole life. It comes with 80/20 Elixirs which I thought I hated, but man they work with the FG9. Might actually keep running the strings it comes with myself.
@@jmsamborski Yeah, same! Haven't been able to put the FG9 down since it came, what a guitar! I also have also used those strings forever and in mediums, but i don't think i'll even bother going up to mediums on the FG9 either. I've bought a pack of D'Addario XS phosphor bronze lights to try when (if ever) these 80/20 Elixirs die, but will be very happy to continue with the 80/20 Elixirs forever if the XS's dont float my boat!
@@arranatkinson8348, I've had my FGX5 for 4 years now and have tried a number of strings on it. So far I like the D'Addario XS 12's best.

The atmosfeel pickup on the X is even better than the Anthem.

I just could not justify the outlay for an FG9. not enough of a player. But its my dream guitar.
Treat yourself go for it 😁
I have an LL16D and an LL16/12. I love them both. Just increadible guitars. Also have an FG820 which gets played almost every day. Dont have an Fg5, and a few things Ive seen online of it would put me off. I want an FG850, and a CRF3, or whatever the little all solid "travel" guitar they make. Played one at the shop and fell in love! Thanks for the post mate.
Awesome brother Yamaha are just incredible, the main thing about the FG5 is the pickguard it's not real ebony it's a fake sticker but underneath that sticker is a standard plastic pickguard, I removed the sticker because it was very noisy with using a pick !
Thanks for the nice video. Great choice, I love both of your guitars. As a owner of 2 Yamaha FS3s, I really wish Yamaha would release FS9M with 25inchs scale length. As a singer, I really like the scale length of Red label FG/FS for finger-picking and light strumming!
The FS9 will most certainly be out this year keep an eye out brother
@@gavincarrollmusic7401 Wow, you were right! FS9s are out!
yeah, but its not the red label scale length. It's 25.9 like the FG9.
@@jmsamborski FS9 has 25" just like Red label. It seems to be a great one for me! My wallet says no, right now, and I am still very happy with my FS3.
@@shogi6790 You're right, the FS9 is 25. I stand corrected.
Hi Gavin. Thanks for the demo. The FG9 sounds absolutely fantastic! The FG5 sounds great too, in a more subdued way. As a singer, I would probably get the latter, which, I think, would complement my voice. The FG9 seems to be what I call a guitarist’s guitar, i.e., great for bluegrass and instrumental music, but a little intimidating for someone who enjoys singing ballads and fingerpicking. Does that make any sense to you?
Its a great choice for a singer songwriter, great for strumming chords alot of power behind you and it's incredibly dynamic highly recommended the FG9 brother
I would also say the FG9 is actually great for finger style. Its dynamic range is ridiculous, especially for an Adi top. It can be played whisper quite. Because of the above, I’m actually forgoing picking up the FS9 I planned on gettting. The FG9 just does everything exceptionally well.
@@jmsamborski I was looking at the FS9s and they sure do look impressive but I would agree with you I think the FG9 ticks the boxes they are really really good
I have both the LL16 and 5 too. I changed the saddle back to urea on my LL16…bone made it much too bright and tinny. Great review and both are awesome guitars. Myself I prefer my 5…of course it is $1000 more in Canada…much lighter and warmer sound.
Hey James I also did the same with the bone on my 16 and put back in the plastic, I didn't like the sound of the bone atal in it ! Great to see you on here thanks brother 🙏
@@gavincarrollmusic7401 All good Gavin and thanks for reply.
@@gavincarrollmusic7401 One thing is that the LL16 is my “bling” guitar…absolutely stunning to look at. I recently picked up an LS6 and those are amazing OOO size. Could not find an LS16 (all wood one) but I don’t think that makes so much of a difference in sound. Certainly I can’t tell.
I ordered an FG9M after playing one. I played it against an LL36 and loved them both, but they were very different. The FG9 just had everything for me - warmth, volume, resonance, and responsiveness. Thanks for sharing!
Hope you really enjoy it when it arrives it's a super instrument brother 😀
I think for my preferences would go with the LL36. But, I did enjoy the FG9 Mahogany when I played it.
Having both the LL36 and FG9M, the FG is probably more immediately impressive because it's louder and has more clarity. The LL36 is sweeter sounding and sometimes is just more of a joy to play. Get the LL36 next time, totally worth having both.
@@jmsamborski Yeah, I actually bought one not long after I made this comment! I can't decide which one I like better. I have several great guitars, but these two are getting all of my playing time lately. Happy playing!
