NICE !!!!
Loved it!
Great sir ! !
Very cool, BD! Loved it!!
I have a 1928 National Hawaiian German Silver Tricone style 1 square neck " like Sol Hoopii and Sam Ku played . It is amazing ,it sounds incredible , the nickel plating is all most like new on this guitar . I compared it to a brand new National Tricone style 1 with the wooden square neck and they sounded quite different . I'm not sure if the new one was Brass or German silver . My 1928 sounds just like the recordings from the late 1920's and early thirties . Thanks for the great video !
Very cool. I would bet the GS and regular brass both new would sound pretty different. However the old ones got the mojo! I don’t know about the brass compounds and thickness difference from new to old. If you find out more, let me know. You can always call National…thanks for watching!
I think I prefer the nickel plated German silver.
I agree with you that the wood one has more bottom end. It also projects more than the metal ones.
nicely done , that was kind of you to make mention of the tiny screw that falls through.
Made in china-
Amen, the corners cut couldn’t have saved that much money…
And the winner is, the German Silver, plated or not.
I am curio😂, do you still have the Republic resonator, and what do you think about them after a few years?
Hey John, thanks for checking out the video. No I do not have the guitar anymore. I bought the smaller size for travel and the travel ended. Also was not real impressed with the build quality, not enough to keep it. Not knocking Republic as it was an ok guitar if you can’t afford another superior brand. I am glad that there are less expensive guitar providers like Republic. However, if one can hold out for a National, it’s worth the wait…only a personal opinion.
I wish that you would had a German Silver Tricone added to this comparison.. It would be fun to have that represented…TY
Hey leeasnin, thanks for watching and commenting! Much appreciated. Although not compared to wood. This past video digs into German silver. Personally, I would always go for German silver if affordable / available. Generally to my ears, much mellower sound (metal finger picks and metal slide). If I could only have one guitar, it would be unfinished German silver cutaway!! Thanks again. ruclips.net/video/mwFaoUQb0XY/видео.html
@@bfrank3468 Thank you. I own a Style 1 Antique Brass Cutaway Tricone and a deep body Maple M1 Tricone. I have a German Silver Style 1 Cutaway Tricone on order showing up next week. So, I’ll be able to answer my own question myself…😎👍🤔✌️ Thanks again!
@@leeasnin2442 please let me know what you think after you get a little time in. Nice mix of reso’s! It is a bad collection disease for sure
@@bfrank3468 Will do! Yeah, I have some guitars for sale to make room for the newest addition!
Love this 'un too!
Infectious tune to go with a playful video! Thanks!
Just picked up a Rogue trolian CT44 for cheap. My problem was completely different than yours. The action was way too high. After watching your video i took mine apart just like you did. The piece glued into the biscuit slot wasnt glued in. I remove it and sanded abot 1/16 inch off and it made a world of difference. Action is better but still high enough for slide and the intonation still a little sharp but 1000 percent better. Thanks for the video. I was intimidated to tear it apart until i watched this.
That is great! That is the best compliment I could get! Wasn't so bad was it. A few minor things to try for intonation. Sometimes the cone (with strings pretty loose) can be shifted just a little bit back and forth. Also you can twist it (the cone) changing the angle of the bridge slightly. I think National makes a compensated bridge, someone also mentioned an aftermarket bridge available I think… if you have the time and energy you can usually get it a little better, never perfect. Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated.
I love just the sounds of a steal National! I’ve got to save up and get one of these.
Great video. What did you use to clean it?
Hey Bruce, thanks for checking out the vid! Very little cleaning. A damp cloth, mostly dabbed. A heavy cleaning or hard rubbing would remove the blues and greens pretty easily.
SO FINE! Love your music, BD!
that looks so cool.
Lovely!
Thanks for this great comparison! So on the video it sounds like the wood body would cut through in a group just as well if not better than the steel. Is that your in-the-room experience? I play fiddle tunes, no chords, with a flatpick and am so far drawn to the wood body.
The wood body would cut, but not as strong as the metal, however more full. All reso’s are very loud. My favorite wood for a flat pick would be a wood body triolian single cone. VERY strong attack. I think I have a comparison video up with triolians. Personally really dislike the wood resorocket, very flat sounding. Only National that I purposely sold due to the sound. The M1 is great, but more sustain than attack. Try to check out the WB Triolian. Very clean attack, less sustain. Thanks for watching and commenting, appreciated!
I like the unplated one the best
Me too, even sound across all strings, for my style anyhow…Thanks for checking out the vid!
Thanks very much! It was good to point out how strings, tunings and finger hardware affect the sound. What are your thoughts on a slotted vs. solid headstock? Keep up the good work!
Although some say there is a difference. I cannot tell or hear one. Some say different string tension, but again can’t personally tell. Other factors are much more of an influence. Strings, picks etc. thanks for watching!
Great song!
❤
Thanks! This was entertaining. Did you sand or remove any of the protective coating that National supposedly applies?
No, only scraped a bit (not intentionally) off with the metal finger pics. Oddly enough this is the 3rd National Rsorocket that I have owned and really do not like the resorocket sound as much as single or traditional tricone models. So it doesn't get played much. If I did this again, I would just put many many coats of Incralac and a different model to start with - thanks for the comment!
I really enjoyed your interesting video... I also enjoyed your commentary and humor. Could you tell me who did the background music it was awesome.
the infamous BD Frank
COOL WORDS , COZY CLOSET , GOOD SONG !!!
Nice!!
Very helpful video. I’m just about to swap out a cone on a Gretsch Honey Dipper.
That guitar looks beautiful
"I just got myself a cup of coffee" those are screws, Frank. SCREWS.
Look in the background, there is an espresso cup with coffee, yes coffee, though a sip of screws was not completely impossible…
Holy crap! Night and day diff!! Awesome!
Pretty Cool , It came out great looking , Good music in the back round too !!!
I'm fascinated by the hats US Americans wear in their videos. Can i ask you why you chose to wear that hat? Do you wear it when you go shopping? Do you wear it when you watch TV? Many thanks in advance for your reply. Regards, Jan
Funny question. I do wear my hat shopping and out in the world, but not to bed or watching TV, unless specifically requested by my wife. I am not a big national traveler, but know this is not specifically a US thing. Even probably more so in Australia and parts of Europe... Hope that helps
Im sorry to say but these Republic guitars are NOT the best on the market
Which one's are? The one you prefer?
Sounds way hotter
Good comparison! I thought the German Silver sounded a little more musical than the brass. This surprised me - I thought it would go the other way.
thanks for viewing! I agree, with more time since this video, the German silver has held up as the most even across all strings, a little more mellow. But again, I am judging with metal finger pics. I just finished / posted a video with an unfinished German Siiver cutaway, a cover of Boogie Chillen. Check it out if you have a chance, captures the sound well...ruclips.net/video/v8fi6aGxBys/видео.html
Does the saddle come out and does it have to be wood, with all other adjustments my strings are too high ,on other guitars I would sand down the saddle but unsure on this
it does on the national biscuits. Not sure if it is glued on this one. I have always sanded them from the top anyway. National is making adjustable ones now (for intonation not height), expensive though. When I replace my biscuits, I typically order 2 and screw one up. They are not expensive...
Oh and have you ever compared the difference between a well spun cone and hub cap a classic Cadillac. They get really well spun. Just teasing! Cheers
Hmmm, I’m surprised that a guitar from such a well regarded manufacturer had such poor QC. It seems that with a little care it can be made int a decent instrument (eg. New nut, new cone, perhaps a new bridge saddle and a good set up). Problem is they still aren’t cheap (sub $300). I expected more care from them. Thanks for a great video B.
I saw a National Delphi in a shop yesterday. New for sale but I think it has been hanging around for a while. The clear coat on the neck, right next to the body, had lifted off. What is it a Two-Pack resin? There looked to be air bubbles under clear coat at the end of the guitar and, I can’t say for sure, but it looked almost like there was a crack in the wood up by the tuners. All this on a AUD$4395 Instrument. Shocked!
Sounds excellent! Liked and subbed.
Damn, I can’t decide.
Now that this video is over 2 years old, could you share how the GS Raw custom finish looks? If you were to buy another one today, would you go with the raw or the plated? Lastly, on your plated guitars, what does the maintenance consist of on those guitars? Thanks very much...
The GS unfinished pretty much looks the same, perhaps a little more dirty. Very little to no oxidation or visual changes. Used at least 150 hrs plus. Apparently, the GS is much less prone to oxidation that the brass (which have darkened up and started showing some beautiful green and rose colors). I have 2 versions of plated. One: old and beat up and heavily used (purchased that way), I don't baby these. Two: pristine, no scratches, no visual wear. The pristine ones (in order to keep that way), to keep a mirror finish require wiping down and polishing / buffing after EVERY playing. No fingerprints can remain. Every now and then a little Flitz polish (heavy headache inducing ammonia smell). I have played these beautiful instruments out and have had people chastise me if they were not mirror finish clean, really, strangers. This is a lot of responsibility that I cannot keep up! My nicely polished ones now just stay in the cases and are show pieces. When we use to gig (pre-corona), I would use 5 guitars, all differently open tuned reso's. I love not having to care for the guits and having them patina naturally. My personal thoughts are, if you are going to gig, get raw, painted or plated matte. If it is a wall hanger and played one in a while, the polished nickel is unbeatable, like a sweet piece of jewelry. And yes, the GS raw I would buy again. Still one of my favorites
@@bfrank3468 Excellent information. You have been very helpful. Keep up the great work!
Yes...thank you. You two are a sight for sore eyes. In times of darkness we need light...and this is just what i needed tonight.
Great song!!!
Thanks so much for taking the time to do this comparison. You have quite a guitar collection. I would agree with your assessment. All sound great but the GS does sound a bit better than the brass to my ear. The difference between the GS plated and raw is very close but the raw is probably just a little bitter but very subtle. Do you notice a weight difference with the raw since there is no plating? Thanks again...
thanks for the thoughts! Most appreciated. Your observations are in line with mine as well. The non-plated GS is the most even across all strings and the best blending in my opinion, however as you mention the plated does ring a bit louder with more rounded lower mids which cut the harshness. Although, I use metal pics and a metal slide no doubt adding to the "bitterness". Not much weight difference, probably within the margin of rounding so to speak...Nothing noticeable, per my bathroom scale one ounce max. Also other factors, differing necks, heavier Waverley tuners and caked on dirt!! The beauty of the unfinished guits!
@@bfrank3468 Once again, great information. Thanks again for taking the time. All the best!
Great cover, great video, you guys sound great! AhhhhhhBffffffffohhhh. B Frank you surprised me with the bass. Ms. B sounds great! You guys are making some great music! :)
