The Amerigo Vespucci is a sailing ship of the Italian Navy, built in 1931 as a training ship for the training of officer cadets of the normal roles of the Naval Academy of Livorno in Tuscany. The motto of the ship, made official in 1978, "Non chi comincia ma quel che persevera" "Not he who begins but he who perseveres" and expresses its vocation to the education and training of future officers of the Italian Navy. The previous mottos were "Per la Patria e per il Re" "For the Fatherland and for the King"; replaced in 1946 with "Saldi nella furia dei venti e degli eventi" "Firm in the fury of the winds and events". In July 1962 the ship Amerigo Vespucci, crossed paths in the Mediterranean with the American aircraft carrier USS Independence, which flashed its light to ask: "Who are you?", receiving in response: "Training Ship Amerigo Vespucci, Italian Navy". The American ship then responded: "You are the most beautiful ship in the world". The ship takes its name from, the Italian navigator, explorer and cartographer born in Florence 1454 Amerigo Vespucci. He was the first explorer to realize, during a voyage in the service of the Kingdom of Portugal in 1501, that the new lands recently discovered to the west of the Atlantic Ocean were not the extreme tip of eastern Asia, as initially believed, but a part of an unknown continent that he called the "New World", and which in his honor was later named America. The current Commander of the Amerigo Vespucci ship is Captain (Capitano di Vascello) military rank corresponding to that of colonel, Giuseppe Lai, in office since 9 September 2023. It is truly beautiful and a source of pride, to see how Italy is appreciated abroad for its excellence. Japan is a great nation, with great people and this is an even greater honor. In the center is the coat of arms of the Navy, in which the symbols of Venice, Genoa, Pisa and Amalfi, the most famous maritime republics, appear from top left and clockwise. Normally used for sailing is the four-wheel rudder, for which the strength of eight men is needed. At the bow of the ship is the figurehead, representing Amerigo Vespucci, made of gilded bronze. Characteristic of the ship are the friezes on the bow and the arabesque on the stern, made of wood covered with pure gold leaf. Saluti dall'Italia!
