What Med School did you attend?
Avalon University School of Medicine
I am working RN and still in my BSN school; I have about 8 months left for my BSN school to complete and after that want to go for med school but I am not sure if I can do it because my spouse is also a student, and I am not sure if I can succeed, but it’s always been my dream to be a doctor.
Yes you can! just erase the “I’m not sure if I can succeed” you’ll be amazed what we can do when we go after something that has been a life long dream…at least I speak from my own experience. Now that I’m done I feel so blessed to have pushed on through. It is truly a rewarding feeling that is sooo soo worth it for those that can stick it out. Remember, if it was easy everyone would be jumping in to do it…but what great thing in life comes easy? Rooting for you and don’t let self doubt deter you.
uff please talk about your experience in the ER fellowship later, I'm interested on doing the same, FM residency and ER fellowship.
Hi there, yes I am considering doing this for sure…my Fellowship schedule is intense at the moment but I will definitely make a video regarding this cos a few others are curious about the process and if it’s even worth it.
Can I ask how old you were went you got into to medical school ?
Started medschool in my 30s, my roommate who was also and NP started in her 40s. We’re both done now 😎…I always said to my friend/roommate when she stressed about the age factor, you can be a 50 year old doctor or a 50 y/o NP, regardless, the 50 would come 🤩
Hi , can one work as an ER attending physician after your fellowship ?
Yes you can. As long as the ER is willing to hire you and you’re confident you can handle all bread and butter ER cases/procedures
Thank you for sharing Dr.
You’re welcome
I couldn’t agree more. Currently in school dealing with the exact situation and considering MD school.
Yeah, it’s a sad situation no doubt
Hi Dr. Gee , which IMG school did you attend?
Avalon University school of Medicine
How many different specialties you can apply to, can you apply to more than 1 just to get into something.
I applied to just one but you are allowed to apply to as many specialties as you can afford. Rule of thumb is, you should have LOR in the specialties you apply and a separate personal statement to upload during the application process.
Congratulations! God bless you.
Thank you 🙏
Hello miss cutie doctor. ❤ I have an question, I'm a doctor in india. I've cleared my mccqe1. And I have one question I need to pay tution fee for family medicine residency program in canada as an img mbbs. Pls tell me
Hi there, no you don’t need to pay. The residency program will pay you a monthly salary while you’re training
Hello there , I just failed step, after that ecfmg they send me this email, they suspend my application to any step exam for a year do to anomalous performance, readiness to test and motivation to pass, I don't know what's wroung, I fail my test due to anxiety, I prepared well but I got so anxious tired during the exams and I run of time and leaving some questions without answering and some of multiple flags,,, so what should I do, I already start to study again, should I wait or this will be more reg flags to get match next year, or changing the whole pass to UK? Did some face same problem here?
I’m sorry to hear about all this. Send me an email at drgeemd1@yahoo.com

Hi quick question how older were you when you graduated medical school?
So I started in my 30s, medschool and graduation added another 6yrs
@@DrGeeMD I will be 32 when I matriculate and also have been a nurse practitioner for several years
Do you have published papers?
Well, 2 papers and a book
@@DrGeeMD book about what
@@IK-fg4gw A novel
Great advice! I got a 244 in step 3 doing just uworld
That's awesome! So happy for you!!! The journey gets easier from here on 👏🏽👏🏽
Any information about dermatology fellowship please?🥺🥺🥺🥺 i would appreciate your help on explaining it or telling me where to search more information about it🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️
Also for which residencies is a derma fellowship possible to do after when it's done?
For family medicine, there is only 1 derm Fellowship in the country and they accept 3 fellows a year. Needless to say it’s super competitive. See the aafp link I have below for more information on how to apply www.aafp.org/medical-education/directory/fellowship/detail/9036946
Yes take a break so you can come back with a renewed mind giving it your all❤
You got it!
Thank you for being honest! We need more MDs and offer free college in my opinion so that we have more educated doctors and incentive to become one. Anyone can become a nurse practitioner online etc.
Very well said. Thank you!
I feel like one of the biggest problems with the NP programs, is that they rely heavily too much on RN inpatient experience! Being an RN is so much different from being an NP because now you’re the one diagnosing, prescribing, coming up with treatment plans, and that’s something you just don’t do as an RN. Yes you get exposure as an RN to different disease processes and you can read the providers notes regarding the patient, but the role doesn’t prepare you enough to be an NP! A lot of people have told me that when they have done the FNP program, they don’t really feel prepared for primary care/urgent care and that their RN experience didn’t relate to the role of being an NP because they had to shift their mindset to think like a provider. So i definitely think NP programs need more clinical hours and they need to stop relying on RN experience. I also feel like there should be more NP residency programs as well. Great video!! Glad this is being talked about more.
You’ve certainly highlighted critical issues in NP education and overall training. Practicing in the RN capacity it’s quite different from practicing at the nurse practitioner level so I do agree that the number of years a person has worked as a registered. Nurse should not carry so much weight when it comes to consideration for NP program admittance/ training. These training programs certainly need a complete overhaul of their curriculum both for didactics and clinical portion.
@@DrGeeMDyess I so agree! Even though no educational program is perfect, i definitely feel like the program could use changes in their curriculum to help better prepare their students to be successful in the field. I went to an informational session for an FNP program the other day, and it was one of the top programs in my state and in the U.S , and they said that they used to required at least 2 years of RN experience, but they stopped requiring a certain amount of experience because they felt like it didn’t translate to how well someone does in the program.
its crazy to me how much you feel like you need to walk on eggshells around this topic. I understand there is some nuance but to me it suggests something is broken if clinicians don't feel like they can speak up about the gaps in healthcare training for a profession that has the autonomy to go into private practice now in many states. I predict that in the next decade we're going to see a lot of malpractice horror stories come to the surface regarding the autonomy that mid-level providers have been given
I couldn’t agree more!
Congratulations 🎉...Do u have to be Tenessee resident to apply?
Thank you! No you do not have to be a TN resident to apply. I’m not a resident of TN. In my case, my home state is Texas and I did my residency training in LA
Nurse practitioners are too busy wanting independent practice to speak about these things
You are absolutely right! The focus should be eliminating the root cause of the issue.
Hi ... i like purple 💜... you reminded of one of my assistant pathology professors from med school ... Same hair color ... great video once again, and thanks for the truth !!! The truth-doctor !
Dr Gee, I am glad I ran into your RUclips videos and I watched several already. I graduate from my FNP school December this year and still dreaming about my childhood dream of becoming an MD. Please keep the videos coming. I am a new subscriber and will be watching all your videos. Congratulations on all your achievements and accomplishments.
I’m glad you found the videos helpful and thank you for subscribing too 🥰
How did you study for your mcat?
Oh my gosh I hated studying for that test. I studied for 2 months and took Kaplan review…my worst section was verbal reasoning, I couldn’t stand it cos it was soo subjective 🙄. I was 8 months pregnant when I took the test, I just wanted to get it over with. needless to say I did “just okay” Mcat is the most ridiculous test I have ever taken in my life…still don’t see how that test should determine who gets admission to medschool IMO. The USMLE step 1 was easier and made more sense, but the Mcat? I think it’s just a test to weed off applicants cos there are limited seats. 😊
@@DrGeeMDstudying and pregnant?!? Women are beyond amazing. God bless you. Thank you for the advice. I took the mcat 15 years ago, didn’t do well and moved on to public health. I’m going to start studying and the thought alone is overwhelming. I don’t want to be like last time, with too many study materials. The mcat is definitely a weed out process and it pisses me off lol I’m trying to stay positive
I AGREE!! I’m a Nurse Practitioner. This is a serious issue, and I’ve experienced it as well. The struggles every rotation to find a preceptor was stressful and the training was not up to par. Glad you are speaking on this.
Thank you! 🙏
This was very helpful, thanks
You’re most welcome!
The only thing holding me back from retaking the CK is the fact that many programs will never give me an interview to explain myself in the first place. I have step one and OET cleared, thinking of taking the CK again
Don’t give up before the battle. Pass your step 2 and apply broadly all across the country and you’ll likely get the opportunity you’re looking for. I know residents that failed multiple times yet still made into residency. It’s not about the failure, is what you did afterwards that counts
@@DrGeeMD Thanks doctor
Hi, Goodness gracious, I think you are an angel that fell from heaven... Tough times and challanges and im doing everything in my power to punch my ticket into residency!
I’m glad I found your channel. NP to MD. Welldone🎉
Thank you!
Hello, where can I apply for mental health in primary care? Thank you in advance
Most primary care outpatient clinic handle straight forward mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, substance abuse disorders, etc
Thank you so much for this. It is very encouraging to know and I truly appreciate this video. I am picking myself back up to study for Step 1 again but it is hard as a full-time Oncology PA. Do you have any advice on maintaining this balance? Thank you so much again
I see that you are affiliated with LSU Shreveport. I am currently a PA at Ochsner in New Orleans. I would love to pick your brain and get advice. Thank you again
It was great talking to you 😊
InshaAllah I'll become a doctor.
Amen!
But can you tell us your lip combo 🥺
It’s Maybelline Color Stay (matte)😊
can we do fellow ship in dermatology after fm?
Hey there, no you cannot. You will have to get into a Derm residency to do that
Oh thank you so much for responding:))
I am an IMG and I really want to join Family medicine.
Hello Dr Gee, nice video. Is there a contact information for you.
Yes, it’s listed in the about me section of my page. But here it is as well drgeemd1@gmail.com
This is the route I will like to take...great commentary!
Thank you!
Thank you for the amazing tips Dr. Gloria, I’m an incoming Intern and it feels incredible to be part of Rapides ❤
Welcome aboard Shasank, I probably won’t see your class much as I’m leaving the week y’all start orientation. But you rest assured it will be an amazing 3yrs learning experience. Even when it feels so tough, just remember….It GETS BETTER after intern year. All the best to you!
@@DrGeeMD Thank you 😇
Can you pls reply?
Hi. Was it an email? If so pls resend as I don’t see one to reply.
Great video! I have a question, were you working remotely as an NP while you were on the Island in med school? I'm thinking of going throiugh NP first and wondering how working will be if I go to a carribean med school
Hi there…no I wasn’t working remotely. However I maintained my PRN job at the urgent care during first 2 years but was only able to work whenever I was back home for break from school.
Are you living apart from your kids and husband while youre in residency? That must be so hard! You balance it all so well
Yeah, a temporary sacrifice for now. Thanks tho 😊
Why does the board of nursing continue to allow this? I'm sure they know about all of this.
Yep, great question
Cool vid! It's very difficult to address microaggressions or flat out bullying if you work in a creative and collaborative environment, where the energy and levity in the room is integral to the success of the company. If speaking up throws this energy out of whack, just know you won't be around to take a stand for much longer. You are just a small, replaceable cog in a gigantic, well-oiled machine and the show must go on, with or without your hurt feelings, sadly. 🤷
Dr G thank you for sharing your experience. My daughter is an IMG and shebis about to apply this year. Wow, ok 150 plus applications and make sure they are IMG friendly. Got it! Tha k you again.
Thank you and goodluck to your daughter. Wishing her lots of interviews and a successful residency match as well 👏
Hello I have a Ed.D, BSN, RN, MSN, CNS-BC is this right, what do I add on my business card E.d.D, can I say Tamika Bevels Ed.D?
Hello Tamika, to simplify things I would have your doctorate listed, followed by BSN, RN to show your background in nursing and the fact that you’re a registered nurse. Like this: Tamika Bevels Ed.D, BSN, RN I think this should suffice.
@@DrGeeMD This is super helpful!! I don’t want to appear arrogant and at the same time I want to display that earned a set at the table and my opinion stands on knowledge and experience.
I didn't realize there were moonlighting options for residents. Great info!!
You’re welcome!
Hi how long did you study for step 3 for?
About 4-6 weeks
