Cromwell Richard Harris Closing Speech
Richard Harris is immense as Oliver Cromwell, and brilliant in this final scene. With the recent MPs' scandal still a sore subject for many, this speech is still particularly relevant today.

The opening song in Stevie's headlining set at Hyde Park on 26 June 2010. A brilliant show!

"I seem to recall that we cut off a King's head for such as this." Cromwell (and others) played the law and changed interpretations when Charles I was on trial. Charles I asked, "By what right do you bring me here?" He asked this as there was no sitting law that allowed the trial of a monarch for what he had done or any other "crime" as interpreted by the body that sat in judgement of him. There's some very good analysis on this subject, and I find Cromwell (regardless of his achievements or his hopes) to be a treasonous man by his actions against the King. I also find what Charles I did to his subjects to be callous, reckless and treason of his duties to his people.

Ah, yes, Oliver Cromwell, who as leader of the victorious Parliamentary army over the armies of the Crown, dispensed with, and disposed of, the House of Stuart's outmoded, medieval doctrine of the Divine Right of Kings and replaced it with the thoroughly modern, progressive institution of military dictatorship. Well done, Oliver!

Cromwell is one of the most interesting and sad tales of man. In this retelling they glorify him quite a lot. While many abhor him for what he did to the Irish. I find him to be man trying to do what he thought was right, even he was often wrong. We all look back on historical figures with such perfect hindsight but fail to realize that we likely would’ve done much much worse if presented with such power. I look to Cromwell as the example that every government shall eventually erode and become corrupt regardless of how it starts.
