I was listening to this episode on Apple Podcasts, and James suggested watching on RUclips to see the hats. I couldn’t find this in any of tabs on your page. I had to search for “retroMaccast man of many hats,” and even then it was the sixth item in the results.

The red dot that counts up to 40 symbolizes the red dot that appears on icons on your home screen (MacOS, or iOS/iPadOS) when you have a message (see the red dot on the message icon?) or a notification. I think the dot with number of messages/alerts first appeared on the first iPhone/iPod touch.

I first used a Macintosh during summer, 1984, after I graduated college, and was a tutor in the college’s “summer gifted program” for high school students. That particular program had bought a bunch of Apple II’s and one Macintosh came with the purchase. No one had any use or particular desire to use the Macintosh, so I got to play a lot during those few weeks.

RetroMacCast can really be considered part of the Macintosh history. Here’s some fun statistics to make us all feel old: This Podcast is 18… - That is almost half the age of the entire Macintosh line. - The original compact Mac form factor (I’m going with the original Macintosh to the Classic II) was only sold for about 9 years. - There was about 17 years from when the original Mac operating system shipped, until Mac OS 9 was shipped (technically, it was never officially discontinued, if I remember, right…though Apple did have a funeral for it, so I’m going by ship dates). - There was about 18 years between the release of Mac OS X 10.1 Cheetah and macOS 10.15 Catalina. - The “MacBook”, “MacBook Pro”, and “Mac Pro” branding has been in use for about 18 years. - MacBook Air is about 16 years old. - Apple II was sold for about 16 years (from the Apple II to the IIe Platinum). - The iBook laptop brand only lasted about 7 years - iBooks, now called Apple Books, are only 14 years old. - 68k chips were used for about 13 years (starting with the Lisa). - PowerPC chips used for about 12 years. (Is it me, or does the PPC feel like it was the longest?) - Intel chips were used for about 14 years. - The classic iPod was sold for about 13 years (21 years counting the iPod touch). - iPhone is about 17 years old. - The AppleTV is bout 17 years old. - iPad is about 14 years old. - Apple Watch is about 9 yeas old. - Siri is about 13 years old. - The Newton only lasted about 5 years. - The hockey puck mouse didn’t even last 2 full years… [All dates are rough, mostly based on official release and discontinued dates]
