ACA 5, Senate Floor Session

This bill was presented on the Senate Floor and the vote was 31-9. We stand firmly in support of ACA 5 and believe it is way overdue to change the state constitution to affirm the right to gay marriage and to remove discriminatory language put in by Proposition 8 which only defined marriage as between a man and a woman. This measure will now go to the Governor for his signature or veto. Senator...

    I used to work there up until January 10, 2020. I was a release planner for 6 1/2 years and when DHS came in is not a good choice. They have never allowed anyone to address "treatment." They don't utilize the people that know this field. I have a double masters' in social and criminal justice and I worked at Patton State Hospital as an intern. I had to resign due to the pressures of the caseloads are too high in the jail and no one wants to go in there because of too many cases, not utilizing social workers appropriately, using incompetent people as "group providers." Ever since Belavich came in and DHS, it has collapsed. DHS does not consider mental health. They look at medical model. They just give them medication, they sleep all day, they aren't participating in groups. Then you have the Mexican Mafia taking over the jail. It has become very very dangerous. And the deputies don't care when you are advocating. The Whole Person Care/Care Transitions (releasing planning). I love forensic mental health and wanted to grow more, but the system burnt me out due to 91 cases and very severe criminal cases that I did not need to work on at the time. There were others that were very sick and needed help to get into a program. They screwed up our relationship with Tarzana because of incompetent medical case workers who are not social workers or they are students who get hired that will be social workers, but they are not doing any therapy and expect them not to come back. These inmates need to be able to be treated with therapy and medication and preparation in life skills. Also, you need people, like myself being used more to work with clients and use our skills. They don't use the social workers effectively. I want to see more done to get DMH back in there and kick out the DHS because they are not making it better. Nurses don't watch these inmates take their meds; they just give it to them and they walk away. I was a deputy in the Midwest and we had them line up. And we checked their mouths and made sure they swallowed before they return to their cells. But these guys are selling, snorting, and killing for psych meds that are not prescribed to them. It's bad. I wish I could be contacted. I agree that people that are set to go to prison should be in a separate part of the jail. They separate by HOH and MOH and the suicide risk assessment and the policy to have certain people at a certain LOC. The problem that the jail has had is that a person in General Population states they want to kill themselves and they get automatically put in Twin Towers, which is not operating very well either. The elevators are not fully operational and a hazard to staff and inmates, and then the piping in Twin Towers is always being broken due to inmates flooding their cells. I agree with you about the criminogenic behaviors and co-occurring problems. I tried to voice to my supervisors to address this and they just rolled their eyes to this. I would love to be a part of the forensic pathway to helping these clients, but we need change in management. There is a laziness to provide good services and burn out. My department, my friends said are leaving and don't want to be there. I was treated so bad by my supervisor (LCSW). My question is, why is a MPH running Care Transitions when it is mostly social workers and the supervisors are LCSWs but the Program Director is an MPH. She does not know how to run it and some of my colleagues were LCSWs doing release planning and not broadening their abilities. DHS would not allow us to go to DMH trainings and separated us and tricked that nothing would change as far as the Mental Health Model. Dr. Hough was the best with these clients. I wish I could be a part of the change, but at the rate it's going, I am afraid of supervisor abuse and overload of cases which makes us unable to do the work. Yep, the upper chain does not listen to the social workers and other mental health people. I can be found on Facebook @KimiAnn DM. I would love to participate in these meetings. I saw so much and it hurt me so much.

    Social workers have become very powerful without supporting education. It's quite amazing to me that it hasn't been addressed that life altering decisions should only be made by the immediate family and for that matter neither should legal personnel. Sometimes you all collaborate and make something that it isn't to get to the goal your seeking. When your 70ish, you'll understand you've destroyed and hurt many...Less education than a teacher. It's interpretation by psychiatrists. Shameful.

      You clearly have no clue what a social worker degree entails. You are the one that lacks education. Know the facts before you open your mouth and look stupid. Teachers can teach a subject that they do not have a degree in, how is that more education? Once again you lack education on the subject matter you are speaking on.

    • @dominiquereyes1694
      @dominiquereyes1694 5 лет назад

      ...what? Social work requires a four year bachelor's degree at the least. Most social work positions require a Master's of Social work which is usually another two years, and to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, you must have 2 years of supervised clinical hours and take a licensing exam. Each program is intense. That's a total of eight years of higher education and does not even include the doctoral degree. The stigma placed on the profession is often due to individuals claiming to be social workers but not having the education nor the experience to back it up. TRUE social workers used evidenced based practices, are required to show competence in each of the Council of Social Work Education's competencies, and are required to adhere to a strict code of ethics. There are obviously some that fall short, but they do not speak for the entire profession.

    Why do individuals always think social workers work with children? Not all CPS workers are social workers. If you want to make an impact, address the system. The system creates policies, and policies are the bigger issue. Social workers, who do work in DCFS/ CPS, are scape goats. Educate yourself people. Social workers work in hospitals, the FBI, adult day health care, HIV/ AIDS clinics, the military, schools, crisis/ diaster (ie: earthquakes, hurricanes, Sept 11th), and the list goes on.
