    Where is going to be your local market for Canola?

  • @flawford1912
    @flawford1912 7 дней назад

    Seeing the same issues here in the UK, just not so far down the road as what you have both described, as fresh produce is still available at local old fashioned markets which are made up of independent small businesses, not linked or owned by supermarkets. Our main issue is the outside investor looking to reduce their inheritance tax liability by buying lowland farmland, along with the rise of the corporate farmer who farms the land on behalf of the investor. These corporate farms seek economies of scale, through mechanization, and so cause the decline of rural communities through the demise of the family farms (as farms are sold and merged) and loss of farm workers and their families living locally. The outside investor has caused land prices to rise so much that they no longer reflect the economic return you can get from farming it, so any farmer wishing to expand has had to borrow over 25 years+ to compete for the purchase; which is a high risk, potentially unsustainable strategy (due to sensitivity to interest rate changes and inflation of key inputs) and cases already been seen of too much debt causing a "slow death" and the eventual sale of the farm. Guess the problem with food is that people have forgotten what wholesome, locally produced food tastes like, instead living off processed food which can be cooked easily and conveniently but lacks taste, nutritious quality and provenance. It seems attractive when cleverly marketed by the manufacturer and the supermarket, but it is just deception. As you mentioned, if the consumer understood the cost it was having on their health and that of their children they may start to understand the importance of fresh, unprocessed food and change their buying habits. Your fresh food Co-OP idea sounds excellent but I would suggest that it will only work long term if it is owned by the farmers who supply it. For otherwise the farmers may be tempted to leave for higher prices rather than support the Co-OP in good years and in bad years. Farmer owned Co-OP's here in the UK sadly didn't survive as supermarkets tempted farmers to sell direct to them (for a higher price, at first) and so slowly undermined the selling power of the Co-OP. Lastly, may I encourage you to to have a look at the RUclips video done by Richard J Murphy (economist & accountant) with the title "inheritance tax charges are really good for real farmers". It may at first not seem relevant to US farmers, but please bear with it as I think you will find it is very relevant as he identifies the real issues affecting farmers, which are common to both US and UK farmers and ties in somewhat with your discussion. Thank you by the way for such an informative podcast. Hope you get other family farmers to see their need to change and cooperate with their family farming neighbours through your fresh Co-OP idea and so try to keep the foundations of rural communities intact. With best wishes, Andrew from Lancashire, England (grandson of a mixed tenant farmer from Yorkshire) "Remove falsehood and lies far from me; Give me neither poverty nor riches - Feed me with the food allotted to me; Lest I be full and deny You, And say, “Who is the Lord?” Or lest I be poor and steal, And profane the name of my God" (Proverbs 30.8) "I waited patiently for the Lord...He brought me up...out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings." (Psalm 40.1,2) "It is better to trust in the Lord Than to put confidence in man." (Psalm 118.8)

    Agridime didn't change their name as part of a rebrand. The Receiver who was appointed after Agridime's assets were seized, created the new American Grazed company to manage the assets as they continued their investigation. As you probably know by now, that company has been sold to a group of private investors who are continuing to operate it.

    It’s all just a big Dick contest and it started back in the 70’s when Earl Butz changed the farm policy. Most farms I see have about three new Denali’s sitting outside the shop and the wife is driving a new suburban and there is a boat either at the lake or in the shop so I think the boys are doing ok. Sure people should know where their food comes from, they should also understand where their electricity and clean water comes from to but nobody gives a shit. That’s just the society we live in and until people have some real hard times it will never change. As far as labor goes, maybe treat people a little better and get into the community and let people know you are looking for help. Nobody is going to just drive down their driveway and ask it’s to intimidating.

    John Deere or case. Neither there's much better options out there Starting a farm. What is your community lacking. There are people making a much better living off of a few Acres of garlic than I am on 800 acres. Starting a farm chasing corn and soybeans would be the last thing I would advise anybody to try to get into. Learn how to grow food. A high tunnel can make a tremendous income Is farming hard. It can be very stressful it can test a marriage or family relations. But physically hard no. I worked off the farm my whole life and doing pile driving and sewer and water work and I can confidently say with them old guys that taught me pile driving I don't see less than 1% of a young farmer crowd lasting more than a day on that crew

    You’re absolutely right but it’s gonna come at a huge cost. Will commodity prices increase to offset the cost is the question. In one hand the government wants all this regulation and in the other hand inflation and runaway cost will be counter productive.

    Great discussion, lot of forward thinking going on. You could do a lot of content segments on about five subjects you covered there. For the farmers wanting to learn where technology is going, I suggest playing Farm Simulator (or at least watch your kid play). In the game, there are numerous add-ons that automate and scale operations. I have built operations with four harvesters, 5 grain buggies, etc. Yes, it does fail and take lots of tweaking to get the game to work correctly but as I said, a great way to envision where this is headed. Sometimes you will look up and see a pile of tractors and such but that's OK, it helps you think through all the operations. Ha. I think you will see swarms of smaller machines instead of bigger machines. Drones have limited batteries and payloads but of course, they will improve dramatically. What if we could have a nurse drone refilling chem and water on the the fly. Several drones could cover a lot of acres with no compaction, absolute precision and so on. There is a limit to the size of farm equipment. You guys know all too well about large machines and narrow roads and such. Everyone talks about compaction but you have machines driving around in the field that are 50K plus in weight...Hmmm. A lot going on, something that never changed about farming is its always changing and it takes a lot of talent to handle all the variables involved. Great job!

    Interesting outlook especially USA, when i was teen i seen us going bigger in farm equipment, computers would be mainstream, markets would change from boom, bust of wool industry in 90's this was government regulation control which dont help, or drive efficiency. So what have done n learn been farmer child to now at 43 of age, i come of small grain like wheat, canola, barely, faba beans, tricale n oats plus running of poll dorset merino sheep. Mum side is dairy milking 130 cows in 13 double up open shed. At high school i started computer software, did Ag but it was basic, i miss out on welding. After finishing in 99 i work at vineyard, then packing/cleaning at supermarket. Started dairy apprentice but drought took wind out of me but lucky i work piggery worker for 3 years before going interstate go follow fellow sheep/cropping but drought force me work at sheep slaughter house at same time completing be woolclasser, then back to dairy industry but had chance to work with different farms when i had year n half been away from dairy. So what i have i learnt...Farmers cant stand flat foot, they need to invest, out side help whether thats crops, computer information, health n safety, future inputs, dont go bigger then 40ft as economies of running bigger then that can seen you broke before replacing. Soil health is important, turning bad year into better future so failed crop could help improve soil structure for years crop. Remember as you age, remember how efficient you have to be as you get older, i have seen all hard work go to nothing because old age has catch up. Future is not just your farm but your community both need same amount of love n care to grow n retirement.
