This is quite sloppy thinking. #1 If you define humanism as "good atheism", then you might as well just call this whole thing "good atheism"; using the word "humanism", in this scenario, conveys no meaning whatsoever, other than it's good branding/PR. #2 If you define humanism as whatever "specific conception of being good based on reason, science, and XYZ", then great, you've made a specific, meaningful proposition (one that can be affirmed/falsified), and it makes sense to use the word. But if this is what you mean by humanism, then it's certainly true that we can say that some religious persons are humanistic (have a mode that emphasizes inquiry, reason, science) while other religious persons are not humanistic (have a mode that emphasizes experience, acting on instinct, intuiting the right thing, etc.). That's a useful meaning to give to a word (i.e., the word that is "humanism"), because it lets you make distinctions. The problem is, that if you define humanism in this specific way, then the word humanism no longer mutually excludes religion, which is precisely the kind of distinction atheists would care to make. So what this person does is take definition #1, because while it's intellectually sloppy and is basically a tautology with respect to "good atheism", it makes atheists feel good, creates good PR, and allows for some of that fun ingroup vs outgroup psychological pleasure (i.e., lets us set group boundaries of some kind). And most importantly, enough people will get confused over the vagueness of the word humanism such that you can always deploy it in whatever way is conversationally advantage in the moment, i.e., you can give it a bit of flavor of definition #2, then switch back to definition #1, then switch back again to definition #2, and of course, in this 2023 era of "short attention span / youtube / tiktok", the people who notice usually won't care enough to point it out, and those who don't notice, don't notice. It's textbook branding & word sneakiness. And it's a shame, because there's no shame in the word "atheist"; it's a perfectly fine, respectable, good word that means something specific and allows for meaningful distinctions. And hey, if you want to qualify it with "good atheist", go for it, that's meaningful too!

You guys do know this is written and narrated by Carl Sagan‘s daughter, right? And her mother Ann Druyan wrote the 2014 Cosmos show narrated by Neil deGrasse Tyson, whom several other commenters are referencing. Maybe some of us only learned about this stuff from TV or the internet, but this video’s writer literally grew up surrounded by astronomical knowledge.

um... no? longest day of the year is the 1st day of summer, so every day after is shorter obviously, also the shortest day of the year is the 1st day of winter, therefore every next day is longer. So days get shorter in summer and longer in winter

Actually the days get longer in the winter, and the days get shorter in the summer. Think about it. The shortest day of the year is also the first day of winter, and every day after the first day of winter gets longer. The longest day of the year is also the first day of summer, and every day after the first day of summer gets shorter. So the days actually get shorter once summer starts and longer once winter starts. So that title is not correct. Why does everyone always get that backwards?

the expalnation to this is as earth revolves around the sun in an elliptical path where is on one of its focus when earth is away from suns focus or u can say near to second focus of ellipse and at that time earth have to cover long distance in greater time by which it rotates faster to travel long distance and earth goes away from sun and near to second focus in winter and thats why winter have shorter days and as in summers earth is near sun and away from the second focus in which earth have to cover short distance but in equal time interval as when it was near second focus so earth rotates slowly at that time by which we get bigger days in summers This is my explanation I might also get wrong but my imagination gives this answers

  • @littlechineseladyv2517

"As you get older, you start to notice things and care about things - be more sensitive to the way things go wrong, and instead of saying: oh, well i am more cognizant of danger and error and folly (falling?), you think well, I have stayed the same and things have gotten worse. I think that is a habit that we should all be aware of as we age and should distance ourselves from". Steven Pinker. Such a good point!

"For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths." - 2 Timothy 4:3-4. it's ironic that the prophecy from sacred text of the bible is being fulfilled by those who do not believe in such a thing a sacred. Its not sacred just because man thinks it's sacred. It is sacred because it is God breathed. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the light. Spend some time reading the book of John and Matthew and you will see for your self. Seek and you shall find.

My friend, I don't think you understand the entire reason of this podcast's existence. The hosts themselves admit that the premise is silly: reading a children's series as some religious document. But in many ways it's not about the text itself. In my opinion it's more about the techniques of divinity school being applied to just about any text, and gleaning knowledge from it. It's about suspending irony and snark, and being sincere about something you love. At the end of the day, the hosts and I would guess the vast majority of the listeners know that Harry Potter is not at the same level as The Bible. And by the way, I find it extremely laughable that you assume that these people from Harvard Divinity School don't know the meaning of "sacred."

HARRY POTTER AS A GOD FOR MILLENNIALS: The move to create a religion around Harry Potter was started by two Harvard Divinity School graduates Casper ter Kuile and Vanessa Zoltan. Almost immediately upon launching their new “faith” it attracted hundreds of followers. The podcast shot to the top and quickly became the number-two podcast in America on iTunes. When you won’t believe the Bible and humble yourself before God, you will fall for just about anything. Even elevating books about witchcraft to the same level as the Holy Bible. www.nowtheendbegins.com/new-religious-movement-rising-around-podcast-harry-potter-sacred-text/

No, the podcast was not created to start nor replace a religion. Quit your fear-mongering. I dare you to find one reputable source that states that the hosts wanted this silly podcast to overtake Christianity.

Discussion topic: how people turn things, like cars, jewelry, even money, into a personal horcrux, infusing their soul into them, for either positive or negative results.
