The easy way to getting stuck GM LS lifters out without any fancy tools.
Просмотров 88 тыс.5 лет назад
The cheap and easy way to get the lifters out without pulling the cam or the whole engine. Some break clean, pliers and a sprinkle of patience is all you need. This will not work if you have major mechanical failure of the lifter.

Buddies of mine doing some quick tuning on a 355ci sbc in a 77 datson 280z and it shot a little flames. Car also has a t56 as well as meagan racing coilovers kit.
Thank you so much! I didn't know what to do with one that was stuck. I had already spent 2 hours and nothing... Until I saw your video!!🤝
@@gustavoaflores7715 I'm glad my video was able to help.
Was that blazer 4x4 to start with
@@johnburke7377 correct. A 2wd frame and front suspension are very different.
I thought collapsed lifters was caused by bad oil like taking too long between oil changes? I have a gmc 2007 5.3L and my lifter on cylinder 7 got stuck. I have them all out now and will replace all of them. What do you recommend to make sure my afm lifters dont do this again? Im gonna buy a new updated vlom as well. Thank you.
@paquesepas6696 it could be multiple things. Overdue oil change, low oil pressure, bad oil pump to pick up tube o ring. The main thing is just wear I believe. To eliminate it in the future, you can do an afm delete kit and tune.
@michaelcoffin4364 but I heard the afm delete kit causes a check engine light. I live in california and that's a no no here lol. Do you think I should buy a new aftermarket oil pump like the melling which claims an extra 10psi of oil pressure over stock? Thanks
@paquesepas6696 afm delete will need a tune to remove the cel. As for the oil pump, unless you have low oil pressure, I would leave it.
How worried should i be about screwing up the lifter bore
@@BoostNBalast as long as the lifter doesn't have mechanical damage, there is no worry about the lifter bore.
Now I want to try this on a piston ring.
I know this video is 4 years old and I hope you see this. You just saved me 25.00 and a trip to Summit Racing tomorrow. I tried stronger magnets, PB Blaster, a pick hook set which would grab them easy but still not get them out. I was about to buy a 25.00 tool after work tomorrow but went on RUclips and saw this video. I had a can of brake parts cleaner. Soaked them, let sit for 5 minutes. Grabbed with the pick and worked back and forth. Half hour later they were all out of the block. Thank you!!!
I read all the comments, man. I'm glad it worked.
I been soaking mine with wd-40. Will get the brake cleaner tomorrow. Thank you
What year is this truck ???
2000.
Just put magic marvel mystery oil on top of lifters afew times as it soakes up.come back next day and your good for removal.change oil.
I'm having that same problem with one of my lifter
W40 works wonders like thunder
I tried this and the lifter completed stove up. Now it won’t slide in the slightest /:
I had one fight a bit. Needed more break cleaner and working back and forth. If it won't come out after that, it may be mushroomed on the cam side, which this technique won't work for.
Thanks for the content needed this for my GMC Jimmy V8 swap lol 😆
Heak ya. I'm glad it brought some value for you. When you get the jimmy done, upload a video. I'd love to see it.
You the fucking man 🦾
Glad I could help.
Was your truck 4x4 to begin with and are swapping to AWD?
Yes, to do a bolt in swap, you have to start with a 4x4 frame.
Very useful 🎉
You’re a Lifesaver man idk why i didn’t think of this lol
Is this the same for the 8.1 liter chevy? You gotta pull the head off?
Yup. The lifter trays are in the block under the heads.
Deep Creep....
Tried deep creep, wd-40, liquid wrench. None actually break down the wax in the oil to remove the buildup causing it not to come out.
Well that's why your push rods bent lol
Got my butt whoopped for two hours last night. Exact same hole. Laying on my ribs. Going to go soak it now.......thanks.
That's how I figured out this fix. Keep in mind, if the lifter is mechanically damaged on the inside, it wont come out.
Im doing a cam swap and it gets stuck on a lifter when i try to pull it out. Can i just pull the lifters off, take out the cam, put new cam in, then put the lifters back in?
I don't know. I've never done a cam install where the lifters were left in.
@@michaelcoffin4364 so it is okay to take them out and slide the new cam in? then put lifters back in
@@sosakicks if you are going through the trouble to take them out, it would be silly not to put new ones in with a new cam.
How does the coil over drive? Any chance they could also work with a lift kit?
No, they will not work with a lift due to ball joint angle. Ball joint angle on these is improved over stock for a lowered car. So lifting it would make the angles actually worse than stock.
When you say, “change out the front half of the diff”, is it just changing out the CV Axle Shaft for the Bravada’s CV Axel Shaft?
Thomas, sorry for not making it clear in the video. The frint half is referring to the passenger side half of the front diff housing. It's referenced in manuals and by GM as an extension housing I believe. So the housing and the appropriate axle will need to be swapped in. Should be 3 bolts on the axle housing and 2 bolts that hold it to the frame.
@@michaelcoffin4364 where can I find part for My 95 blazer
Awesome!
I just push it in and out few times then it will be released easy
Wetter= way+better😂
Wax-based oil… hasn’t been sold in years
Here is a great spot to read up on oils and other chemicals. While not "wax" based as most think of candle wax. They are a pariffanic oil. So while not a wax build up as in candle wax, they are a wax like buildup duo to its iso and cyclo branch chain pariffans. Also keep in mind this engine is 22 years old. bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/paraffin-and-engine-oils.92600/
Going to try this on my 1998 Lincoln Town Car today. Brake cleaner, who knew!
Is there a way to add brake cleaner to the oil to bust this varnish up before a regular oil change?
I like how you think. However I wouldn't do break cleaner. It will break the oil down causing major damage to the engine. This is why it's crutial to change the oil after doing it the way I showed. If you want to try and remove this before working on the engine, something like seafoam or restore. You may try some hot shots secret stiction eliminator. I've hear it does well but never used it myself.
Draining a couple quarts of oil out then topping off with new transmission fluid would do wonders, it has detergents in it that will wash out a lot of sludge and carbon buildup, really bad and un-maintained engines may need it done a few times before filling up with just oil.
Yeah man thanks this is great. I’m using this technique on an on old 70s Ford engine that’s literally been sitting in the dirt for the last 20 years. Just got a stuck lifter out in 5 minutes using this method.
Hell ya! Glad it worked. What motor and what kind of project are you putting it in?
Did you ever finish the project?
It was done and my daily driver for a couple years before this video. After the video was taken, the engine was refurbished. At which time I noticed the frame was cracked again through an old repair. I made the decision then to donate the bare chassis/body to the local tech center so they can teach kids frame repair with a body on frame vehicle. At the time they only had unibody vehicles. I still have the AWD setup and plan to use it in a future project.
Im just in the middle of the same project, Im using an zr2 blazer. I inspected the chassis before going any further and there is no cracks and hope there is never one.
Also, do you think that this would cause excessive noise/ ticking, due to the lifters being how they were? All of the rollers on mine looked great and I had only put 300 miles on the new cam and the old cam didn’t have damage on it (that I could tell): more wondering if you think it’s plausible it could cause noise. Thanks for any insight
Sounds to me like it could be a possible lifter getting weak.
Thanks for this video. I fought the drivers side out and then patiently worked the passenger’s side out with this similar method. Every other video I had seen made it look so simple and I thought I was screwing things up. This just confirms that I didn’t and that patience is key. Thanks again brother!
Are the roll pans still available for the S-10? And are they cheap? I looked the S-10 forum and all they had were very expensive steel roll pans.
Do you still have 4lo option? I wanna do the bravada axle shift swap to get rid of vacuum.
No, the awd transfercase is a single speed. Not sure if keeping 4wd and going with the awd front axle is a good or bad option. There is a cable that you can buy from lmc truck that replaces the vacuum system.
I cant wait to do this to my LT Blazer. I'm goin 6.0 with a 2.9 Maggie and a 6L80E... hopefully the AWD will fit also. It's gonna be my weekend truck. 🤪
Thanks!
Anytime. Glad I could help.
@@michaelcoffin4364 I ended up using a combo of WD-40 and brake cleaner. Took about an hour to get them all out.
@@mike.fleming the key is they came out right.
WHY NOT THE AWD ASTRO VAN ; THIS IS WHAT THEY USED IN THE SYCLONE.
That's where the parts came from.
So, I got the borgs warner 4472 out of a 1997 jimmy with the front dif, both front cv shafts and the front drive shaft. All I need to do is swap the passenger side cv shaft and get a new rear drive shaft? Or will my drive shaft from my 2000 chevy blazer 4x4 work. Both the jimmy and my blazer were 4 doors
I cant remember if the output shaft flange is the same for the rear, someone can correct me. I want to say I had the yolk swapped and the driveshaft rebuilt. I don't believe it was modifies length wise. Throw yours in and double check. Would take 2 minutes.
br0 I got a stuck Lifter Just 1,,,,not more than 1000 miles on the motor,,,,is this Normal,,,,Thank you for the Knowledge,,,,dam I hope that works man🏁🔩🦍🔧🏁🙏
With 1000 miles on a new build. I highly doubt this method will work. Sounds like you had a mechanical failure with a lifter.
What transfer case did you put in it?
Borg warner 4472.
Have you ever heard of the lifter mushrooming on the end and won't come out? I have drove it for about 9 months and now it won't come out.
Yes I have heard of it. Sadly, this technique will not work with a mushroomed lifter.
Awesome seeing someone else in okc doing this. And finding an9ther youtuber from okc you are like the 3rd one that does car stuff ive seen this week lol. But definitely looking to do something like this just wanting to get my 07 f150 4.6 sold then out the money into an obs truck of some sorts. But if this is ever running and up for sale i might be your guy!
This blazer is long gone. It ran before this video for 2 years. Then my accident where I re-cracked the frame from a previous accident I didn't know the vehicle had been in. I kept the AWD system. I would like to find another 2 door 4x4 blazer to swap it into. Been wanting to do a step by bstep on how I would do it vs how others have done it.
@@michaelcoffin4364 sorry to hear that! But definitely post about it if you start a new project and can i understand how hard it is to film while trying to work on something though but best of luck to ya.
If they have that crap on the outside, you should disassemble them and clean them out then soak in fresh oil and reinstall. I just did this, and soaked them in solvent. You wont believe the amount of shit that comes out of the inside. Because they are roller lifters, you don't have to put them back in the same holes either. But really clean the crap out of the inside too! Then they won't collapse on you.
If I'm going through all that trouble to get them out. I'm putting new ones in, It's cheap insurance and piece of mind. It's also faster.
Hey do you think I should buy new lifters or can I just clean the old ones up ? Any help would be appreciated thanks
Honestly, if you have already gone that far. I would put new lifters and trays in it. Cheap insurance.
hey man i really appreciate your video im dealing with same issue . just wanted to say thanks for the help
No problem man, I'm happy to hear it worked for you too. Thank you for the feedback.
Try some Motor Medic first just put it in the oil and let it idle 20 minutes a day, mine freed up after the 4 day then change the oil and get someone to tune the DOD and AFM off. I have a lot more power than before and better mpg if you can keep your foot off the floor . Night and day difference
While my video isn't for a stuck lifter that you don't want to replace. Your comment got me thinking. I wonder if running something like motor medic, restore, seafoam or trans fluid would help remove the wax build up and free the lifter for removal
Will this work on 08 silverado vortec 6.0
Absolutely, as long as it's not a damaged lifter.
What transfer case did you use? Everyone I have seen aren't all time AWD.
