Graphite Powder on Mandalorian Armor: One Year Review
Просмотров 8 тыс.2 года назад
I realized it was over a year since I did the graphite powder video, and since then I've seen a lot of people promoting it as a great alternative to chrome paint. I wanted to give my two cents on how it's held up since then and if I would still recommend it thanks for watching!
Graphite Powder - Mandalorian Armor

Hello, Everyone! I made this video in response to a few requests on the Mandalorian forums on my graphite powder technique/hack. Links to the products used below: Graphite Powder www.amazon.com/dp/B016Z6TYR2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_KOiLFbMAMRFX5 Clear Coat www.amazon.com/dp/B0082LJMC6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_rRiLFbGADY9R5 Makeup Sponges www.amazon.com/dp/B01F36JEXE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_iSiLFb93Y296C?...
Where did you get the file for them ammo?
I don't understand why I don't have the same result as you, my armor is much darker even though I did a black base then graphite powder then varnish and then again Graphite powder, do you have anything to recommend to me? And also the problem is that I can't use the same product as you, I'm in France, we don't have the equivalents On the branded products you use😢
How would you do a stab mark through the armor with a vibro blade?
Do U know why it sometimes happens that I get cracks after applying clear coat to the graphite? I am using 1k clear, is it necessary to use 2k and why? Thank you
its same problem i se its clear coat destoy the metalic its be darker i dont like i have try.
I’ve been looking for a video like this one for the past week! So glad someone finally explains the whole process! Great vid!
hello somebodi here
Hi, thank you for your great videos 👍👍 sorry about my English 🫣 where can I get this great file with magnet connection ❤️ best regards from Austria
So once the Graphite is applied does it stay on the parts it won’t come off ?
Is your final layer graphite or clear coat?
is it possible to make clear coat or candy red on ? thx
How does the graphite coat hold up to water/weather please?
Such a nice build! Thanks for sharing.
I tried using the graphite method but for some reason the chrome effect is a bit too dark, what could I do?
Same
Use grey base color instead of black
@@topaxx101 thanks man, gonna give it a try
This is really cool! Do know if it works on eva foam?
I’m sad to hear the Graphite Powder isn’t as Great as I’d hoped .
Has anyone ever used A Vinyl Wrap on their armor ?
So then you wouldn’t really recommend using The Graphite Powder ? Maybe I’ll use A Chrome Tape
Can I apply The Graphite powder to the bare plastic 3-D printed parts ? Or what type of Undercoat paint do you recommend?
What would you advise me to use to bond graphite for a high temperature mold?
maybe a Clear Paint Protection Scratch Resistant Vinyl Wrap Film
If you don't put the transparent paint and the piece gets wet, does the graphite fall off?
I think so.
Do I NEED a clear coat?
I have the same graphite power as you but my finish comes out slot darker and almost a blueish gray. Instead of having a yellow tint. Do u know y this could be happening??
Did you put anything on it prior to graphite powder? Primer or seal?
Mine makes no difference on it. I’m using a different graphite powder but looks like the same bottle. Any idea?
This was the best tutorial on youtube man, bang on.
Where did you get that chest plate? I really like that look and I'm hoping to get one for myself!
Check out Joe Silvagio’s graphite Mando armor process. It wears extremely well. In a nutshell the process is as follows: primer & wet sand to 320, 2nd layer of primer & wetsand to 600, primer sealer, 1st coat of clear coat (dupicolor), wetsand to 2000, polish with car polish, 1st graphite powder application, 2nd clear coat, 2nd graphite powder application - done. Obviously more details than this summary but his 1.5 hr video shows every detail step by step. Finish doesn’t wear off. You get some graphite rub off but you simply rub on more graphite over teh spot. Half my armor is done via this method & it looks amazing. The other method of course is primer to 600 grit, gloss black dupicolor spray can then air brush with Alclad. Less steps but you need an airbrush or course & you’ll need to practice a little first but air brushing when you’re just covering in one color is not very difficult
can you link the video?
Link would be good indeed. Neither here on YT, more on Google it gives results when searching for this name.
@@eyeflytinkerings @Lobyone Dunno if you found it yet, but I can also attest to this process. Works amazing for the con floor, and I only have had to do a small reapply every 4-5 cons due to normal ruboff/ wear and tear. If you really take your time, you get this same mirror finish, I couldn't be happier. ruclips.net/video/YpiAKiOWbmw/видео.html
@@lusameera I haven't, so thank you so much for the link! Sound quality is awful, but content is amazing.
How long did you have to wait to apply clear coat after putting on the graphite powder
Hey man, What was the black primer you used in the first video
If you're referring to the gloss black, it's just the standard krylon gloss black.
@@nickbraun7577 awesome, thank you very much. Appreciate the quick response as well!
Does the clear coat seal it in?
I love your Mando Armor. Do you know where I could get me some of the gauntlets?
Also, your experience helps me out a ton, as I wasn’t able to pick a good paint job for my future armor. So thanks!
No matter how many times I've tested this I can't seem to get it to look as good as this. Yours seems to come out very bright and almost silver but mine seems a lot darker every time I try. I am using the exact same graphite powder too. Does it look the same in person or does it appear much lighter on camera?
ive noticed the same thing, i tried recently not adding the black first layer and instead just using the grey of my sanded filler primer, looks almost exactly like what is in the video
@@ethanc5758 So you used the filler primer and put the graphite powder directly on top of that and didn’t use the black coat and clear coat?
@@nickn271 yea I put filler primer, sand it down with some 1500, then start the graphite process like in the video
@@ethanc5758 That worked for the most part! I actually did the filler primer, wet sanded it to 3000, sprayed a very light gloss coat, let it dry for about 25-30 minutes. Then I applied the graphite and buffed it pretty hard.
So my friend graphite powder it's no a god option
When you do the final color paint layer, how do you keep the silver in there? Masking fluid?
Yes! I use liquid latex, like the kind used for Halloween monster makeup. I apply it with a silicon paint brush.
Looks good. Have you tried wetsanding the clear coats? I've heard horror stories about putting clear on graphite, but looks like you have a workaround.
I made a follow up video for this process, go check it out!
@@nickbraun7577 How good is the adhesion to the plastic? do you have problems after use?
Super handy information! If you know, where can I find the files for that same style chest plate?
that looks really amazing
What paint did you use before using the graphite powder?
Usually it's a black gloss--I've seen Krylon and Rustoleum used frequently. Hope this helps.
This is awesome, could you tell me where you got the flight suit and belt from?
Thanks! I made the belt myself, I do custom leatherwork on the side. I also made the suit myself, out of a pair of Dickies!
@@nickbraun7577 that’s awesome dude, any chance u made a how to vid? I’m in the middle of making a suit myself. I got the armor down but the leather parts and flight suit is throwing me for a loop.
My graphite powder doesn’t have good coverage at all on my part(same brand as you). It is wet sanded to 1200grit and has a really nice surface. Do you know why this could be happening? Type of spray paint perhaps? Great video!! Thanks
I have the same problem, had the base super smooth, and the graphite has a very hard time covering and leaves al swipe marks and stuff
Same issue here
hi, sorry...what kind of protection do you give to the glossy finish with graphite so that it stays fixed?...thank you!!
Are you letting the paint dry before applying the powder?
very nice build Vode
Thanks bro!
cool, this guy gets an incredible finish with graphite powder but I don't know if its durable, he washes the graphite and maybe with a thinner layer of graphite the clear coat sticks better ruclips.net/video/YpiAKiOWbmw/видео.html
Thanks for sharing your experience! Really useful
The work is not done properly, paint cannot compensate for bad sanding. What a shame for all the work for such a result.
I wish Montana would make a graphite spray paint
What black base did you use? I tried this and it’s really black. Even before clear. I’m using the 1k clear.
