Rhodes and Phase 90 vs. Nord Stage 3 - Which Sounds Best?
We took a late 70’s Rhodes 73 Stage Piano and paired it with a late 70’s MXR Phase 90 clone made by Ross, knob set at 2PM. We compared it to Nord Stage 3 on the “Nerfertiti” Electric Piano setting (said by many to be the best approximation of classic Rhodes). We used the Nord built in Phaser with rate set at 3 and amount set at 6. The passage is obvious - classic Billy Joel phased Rhodes from Just The Way You Are. This is a quick and dirty iPhone recording but which do you prefer?

Trouble shooting a Dometic G6A-8E RV Gas water heater
Просмотров 4,6 тыс.3 года назад
When the propane water heater in my 2005 Lazy Daze RV stopped lighting properly, it was difficult to find the reason. After looking at every obvious possibility, it turned out to be the control module (Dometic 91367), but more importantly, the adaptor used to plug the module into the heater. The adaptor has copper traces and they were corroded and stopped a proper connection. Hope I can save yo...
Original wax caps vs. recapped Hammond B3 sound comparison
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 года назад
In this video we will compare the sound of a 1959 Hammond B3 and Leslie 122 with a 1961 Hammond A102 and Leslie 147. The A 102 is completely original and has its original wax tone generator capacitors. The B3 has new capacitors from Tonewheel General and its preamp has been refreshed with new capacitors, resistors, tubes etc. Rather than mic each Leslie separately, I placed one mic at normal an...
Success! Repairing an Uncoupled Hammond B3 Tone Wheel Generator Shaft
Просмотров 5224 года назад
See Part 1 of 2. My Hammond B3 suffered from a broken “uncoupled” tone wheel generator shaft. I was able to install a replacement brass “paddle” to couple the shaft back together and get all tone wheels spinning and the start motor function working. It was tricky and frustrating but I hope what I learned will help someone out there.
Repairing an “uncoupled” Hammond Tone Wheel Generator shaft Part 1
Просмотров 5774 года назад
The tone wheel generator from my 1959 Hammond B3 suffered a broken coupling or “paddle” which rendered the last part of the shaft useless, caused the start motor function to cease and cut off two bins of tone wheels. To repair it, I had to remove the tone wheel generator from the organ and fit a replacement paddle between the shaft sections. This is not a project for the faint of heart! This is...
Great trick for unfreezing a Hammond B3 vibrato scanner without removing from organ
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.4 года назад
There are a number of videos on RUclips showing how to rebuild a malfunctioning vibrato scanner, but what if you think your vibrato scanner is good, but the rotor is just stuck from sitting unused for too long? Here is a little trick I used to get the scanner spinning again without even taking it out of the organ.
Removing plastic couplers or clamps from AC line. 2002 Mazda Miata

When uncoupling the AC lines (2002 Mazda Miata) from under the hood to remove the condenser box assembly from inside the glovebox area, I had trouble figuring out how to remove the plastic couplers that hold the lines together. The shop manual calls for an SST or special service tool, but a very small screwdriver will do the trick with a little care and patience.

You didn't show how you got to this stage... ie with the wires all connected and access to the scanner rear. You mentioned at 2:13 "take the vibrato scanner and the MOTOR out. This seems scary.. removing the motor and its shaft?? OR does this stay in place and only the scanner comes free?? Seems like a lot of work to get the the motor out. My C3 vibrato behaves the same..so it is/has seized. Any tips are welcome!
The shaft is in two pieces and comes apart easily. There are springs that help couple it. Don't lose a spring, but if you do you can buy a replacement. Taking the motor out wasn't very hard -- as with all things working on your Hammond -- take a couple of pictures before so you remember where everything goes, take your time and keep track of small parts. If I remember correctly, there are four nuts to remove and the spring couplers and that is it. When you take the back cover off the scanner be very careful because the little pin inside can bend easily.
Did this with my M3 which has been stuck for DECADES!!! I now have chorus function restored!! Removed the 4 mounting nuts, supported the unit and shaft on wood blocks, removed two cover screws, the contact and gently taped screws out of the way. A couple ml's of lighter fluid a couple times while working the scanner and it was spinning freely within a day. I was able to see scanner spin while turning the scanner shaft to ensure clutch mechanism was good. Didn't have to touch any wiring! GREAT TIP - THANKS!!!
woops - taped "springs" out of the way.
@@c3banjo happy this worked out!
I have the same actuator and the master cylinder is quite rusted (yours looks the same, too). A new master cylinder assembly costs $200. Does yours work even when it looks bad from the outside?
I own B3 #56014 & #67911. Both work with their original wax caps. I never would recap them as long as they sound so good. Some fellow organ players were totally unhappy after the recap job because the old charming sound was gone forever...
Awesome video🔥I have a Mk. II Stage 73 as well and was wondering if yours came with working pickups or if you had to replace them- if so, where did you get your pickups?
All of the pickups worked well, but we were experiencing some dull notes and intonation problems. We got a kit from Vintage Vibe and replaced all the washers and screws holding tone bars and replaced all felts. We also carefully lubed all action parts.
Thanks for the great video. I believe my scanner is also Frozen and I will address it very soon.
I recapped my A100 a few years ago and calibrated every single tone wheel pickup. Every wax cap (out of circuit) was a million miles away from spec value. It was a long and painful process to be honest, but the sound was muddy and boomy before. Now it shines. Well worth doing IMO, if you have the patience to do it.
I did not adjust the pickups but I did measure peak to peak voltage outputs with an ocilloscope before and after recapping. The voltage output "curve" after recapping was much more in line with the "ideal" curves that you can find by searching the internet for advice on recapping. In general, the organ just sounds more lively now, but I did dial back the tone control and played with the pre amp output settings to try to dial in the sound. My Leslie 122 is very prone to distorting (not in a great way) so I should probably get that amp rebuilt.
@@RestLes I had to replace all the dual can capacitors in my Hammond and Leslie amps, and any other electrolytics inside the chassis. I would start there.
It would help having someone who could play to demonstrate.
I agree. Not exactly apples to apples but just did this for fun.
To do a true comparison, you would need to run them both through the same speaker. Preferably a Hammond Tone Cabinet. Then it would be apples to apples.
Did you make a part 3 and four on how to actually get the mechanism out?
Sorry - no more installments. Sold the bike shortly after this was made.
This was really helpful, I have a t series I got for free and the first coupling spring on the shaft was jammed up in a tone wheel and mangled. I’m hoping I’ll be able to get another spring on there or possibly a flexible shaft coupling that can set screw or clamp on.
Well, they both have a tone control, and i would guess that they are both turned towards the treble side a bit more than mine.
Good job
Do you have a video on how to access that bearing? I wanna take it out but don’t wanna break it
Oh mannnn! I'm no pianist, but from the outside listening in, I'll say it's definitely impressive how close the Nord's representation sounds to the OG, but the classic Rhodes sounds so much fuller! The bottom you get on it just makes it hit different! 🤩
Nice 🎹
Great video. What impact screwdriver is that?
This could happen to you!
I almost wonder if the drawbar setting was chosen based on what sounded good on the A102, and then on the B3 that same setting sounds waaay less subtle, like you just had all of the drawbars out. The A102 has a sweet nostalgic quality to it
Mess around ray charles 😅😂😅
Wound it be easier to just run a bluetooth adapter through the factory 9-pin cd changer / OnStar plug?
I did this a few years ago and at the time, there were no adaptors of any kind available. Maybe that has changed.
I’m too scared to spray lighting fluid in there. I’m afraid it’s going to explode 🤯 or something
Definitely be careful but lighter fluid or camping fuel is not as combustible as gasoline, it is a bit oily. But the nice part is that it dissolves gummy stuff and evaporates to nothing in a day or two.
@@RestLes Yes. Also your syringe method puts a very tiny amount of fluid. A fraction of a milliliter (cc).
Looks like they are no longer in business.
watched this a few times weeks apart result = 102 nice and natural like just out of factory my experience after owning 14 or so B3/102 etc is better to leave alone although a nice organ mate reverb is cool good vid “If it ain’t broke leave it alone “ 👍👍👍✌️
Dumb. Track is just too small.
This is great thanks
B3 sounds darker than the A102
Your first name is so fitting for this video lol.
I like the B3 sound best
Great vid! 👍🏼
What’s an organ demonstration with out using the bass pedals?
Legit point. When we have the time, we will redo this with both organs through the same Leslie, more volume and the bass pedals installed.
B3 more dark and warm sound base on. manufacturer date early models warm sound i like it, late models 61 to 65 brighter crispy sound more cathedral sound base on newer red caps components, same for the rest of hammonds C3 A100 RT3, ETC. BEST YEARS FOR HAMMONDS CONSOLES 1955 TO 1959, BRIGHTER SOUND CRISPY 1960 TO 1965, AFTER THAT NO THANKS.
To me, the A102 sounds a little more "organic", they both have the beautiful Hammond sound, but the A102 is more authentic. It's hard to explain, something about the B3 is off.
interesting. I think the Leslie 122 isn't sounding like it should. I have a 145 that I know sounds great so when i have time, I'll run another comparison with both organs through the same Leslie close mic'd.
a102 sounds good to me original HAMMOND sound ...the recap b3 comes in 2nd too much mods bass sounding when a recap should be bright
I agree. I suspect the 122 Leslie is much bassier than the 147 and that may account for some of the difference. When I get a chance I will put them both through the 147 and record both at higher volume and see what happens.
I really enjoyed listening to this comparison but have to admit I have a slight preference for the A102. I'm not sure where you're located but let me know if you are ever interested in selling it. Thank you.
In case you needed proof that automotive engineers are terrible people....
Do you know of anyone who has a Hammond a100 in the Massachusetts area
I don’t know about any in Massachusetts but I have been thinking of selling my almost perfect condition A102 with or without Leslie 147. You can email campbellrude@gmail.com for more details and pictures. If you are interested I can help with delivery.
Thank you Leslie!!! This was exactly what I needed to free up the scanner on my 1962 A102! This technique was much easier than tearing down the whole scanner! Spinning free!
Can you explain how you repaired the swivel piece? I’ve broken a few of those. I’d be interested in how you did it.
Sorry -- just seeing your question now! Unfortunately, the video is so old that I don't remember how I fixed the swivel piece. I suspect epoxy was involved.
LOL what a joke.
Why not power bleed from the bottom pushing the fluid up to the master?
Excellent! Hey, do us all a favor next time and film in LANDSCAPE mode so we can actually SEE more of what you're doing. But the tips and tricks were excellent.
Yes. That IS money. Thanks. Working on mine this week.
Or you could have used more oil and waited. If there are broken oil capillary threads the fix is temporary. WD40 is a big no no for Hammond organs and many other equipment. It is Water Displacement formula 40. It will make a gummy mess if not used as originally intended. WD40 is not a lubricant.
in my experience, even Hammond oil, if left long enough in an organ which is stored and never started, will dry into a a hard, epoxy like substance which will lock metal to metal. I don't think WD40 will do much to melt it, but naptha and lighter fluid will. Naptha and lighter fluid also evaporate into pretty much nothing. But I agree, if you don't have a functioning oiling system, you're just looking for future trouble
@@RestLes Sadly, it happens. Threads are broken to the run motor and vibrato scanner. Stringing the front oil thread of the motor is relatively easy. The back thread of the run motor passing through a hole in a brass sleeve requires a little creativity, and of course being careful. As for the oil threads of the vibrato scanner, I have had to completely disassemble the unit not only for a thorough cleaning but to replace al of the oil threads with something heavier. At this point the capillary oil threads in most mechanical tone wheel Hammond organs are extremely fragile from deterioration. Concerning hardened oil, eventually most all lubricants breakdown in some way. Atmospheric conditions are a major factor. My only other concern is, there is there are AC voltages present at the junction terminal., High DC voltages under the pre-amplifier etc. An amateur whom is not aware of such dangers should not attempt this. There is also a problem with AC leakage of the power transformer of the pre-amplifier as either the varnish and/or tar insulation breaks down. All aging vacuum tube electronics suffer from this.
I have a T-412 with a frozen scanner, but access isn't like the B3, or even like the T-443 I used to have. It'll be a bit of work getting to it, but thanks to you, I now have a pretty good idea what to do once I get there, without having to take apart and rebuild the scanner itself. I suppose I still might eventually rebuild it, based on your reply to Mike's comment. Seems like it might be necessary sooner or later anyway.
I did rebuild mine, but only because I had to remove the whole tone generator. I didn't hear that much improvement after the rebuild in any case. Before you give up, try putting the lighter fluid or naptha into the lubricating tub with the wicks going to the vibrato scanner. It may take a while, but it should wick into the scanner and loosen the petrified oil that is making it stick. Once it is free, go back to normal oiling protocol.
I believe the T100 through T500 series has a drum scanner. A very different animal.
how much would you charge me to do this if I send you my stereo to do this?
Nice trick! The last two organs (A100 and B3) that I purchased had frozen scanners. It's funny, but I have been repairing these things for decades and never used to see this. Usually, when the scanner is frozen it needs a total tear down and cleaning. I have found the best way to clean the washers is with lacquer thinner. I use soap and water on the pole pieces to keep the VOC waste down to a minimum. Once the scanner is reassembled it is a good idea to check each pole for continuity - there should be no continuity between the pole pieces and the body of the scanner. This fault will cause the "motor boating" sound. Also, shocking the pole pieces with 18 vdc (two 9 vdc batteries in series) will eliminate crystals that cause shorts. I usually shock the scanner after it is reassembled just for insurance.
I did end up rebuilding the scanner mush as you describe, but I used acetone as a cleaner. i kind of regret it because it is quite harsh, but I don't think there was lasting damage. I bought another scanner, motor and start motor through Ebay for $30 as insurance. They are quite cheap. I guess because so many Hammond models used the same scanner.
Thanks for sharing! I NEED HELP!! When my Vibrato switch is OFF, the sound gets very faint. But when the vibrato switch is ON the sound is normal. I zapped my scanner with 18v and it did improve the sound drastically but didn’t fix. Any suggestions? Thx
Quick and easy for 1 action. It would be a whole lot easier to disconnect it and remove the cap so you can activate it by hand to flush 2 axles..one man's opinion.
Perhaps that would work on a newer trailer, but I tried everything to move enough fluid down the lines of a 20 year old dual axle that had been sitting for years and this seemed to be the most effective method.
@@RestLes Thanks.
Great song choise
Haha Ik he loved this comment
Great video s this helped me a lot i’m I stalking a Bluetooth device
I just tried hooking up my pneumatic brake bleeder to my tandem boat trailer with surge brakes & i got nothing out of the bleeders. Are you driving the truck forward then putting in neutral and ratcheting the come along compressing it then going forward again?
I used the come along to pull the actuator in, cracked the bleeders, let fluid come out, then closed bleeders again. Then I let the pressure off the actuator by releasing the come along. You may have to move the vehicle forward a bit to make sure the actuator gets fully extended. Unless your brakes lines are really full of air, two or three actuator cycles should get all the air out.
@@RestLes Thank you!!
