The People in the Woods
Добавлен 27 авг 2023
The housing market won't crash? Fine. We'll build a house ourselves.
Watch us fight the woods to achieve the millennial dream of home ownership in the wild woods of Maine. We're starting with raw land, some knowledge, a collection of tools, and a whole lot of misplaced idealism.

Building a Mailbox and Burning a Chair
Welcome back to our shenanigans on our 80+ acre parcel of off-grid land in rural Maine.
J built a mailbox, purely for looks as our mail still goes to my Mom's house, until we move to the property for good next spring. We snagged the mailbox at a thrift store for $3, and after re-riveting the entire thing it works great!
I worked on aesthetic stuff, like clearing the brush so we can see our mud, and cleaning out the Ted Shed so we could really grasp how structurally unsound it actually is.
Our time at the property is growing shorter, as we don't have the capability to be there during the harsh winter months, but come spring, we will be back with a vengeance. Stay tuned for a few more episode...

We Built a Picnic Table!
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.Год назад
Welcome back to out 80 parcel of off-grid raw land in rural Maine. With winter fast approaching, we've decided to throw our efforts into vital projects, like making a space to eat expired MREs that isn't the fragrant front stoop of the most beautiful outhouse in Maine. We won't be linking the table plans we used from generic orange big box store, because they were terrible. Having a skilled car...
Rained Out & Called In

Welcome back to our 80 acre parcel of raw land in rural Maine. It's not all fun and games here at the property, as we continue to battle mud, rain, more mud, and being soaked to the bone. We've accepted that Rome wasn't built in a day and neither will our driveway, and that sometimes it's okay to let someone with 20 years experience do a job in a few hours that we haven't solved in weeks. We ar...
The Tractor Arrives

Welcome back to our 80 parcel of raw land in rural Maine, where we are trying to carve out a life in the never ending mud and rain. After much deliberation, we bought the tractor of J's dreams, and with some much appreciated help from his parents, we were able to get a backhoe attachment as well. Kubotas are known for their reliability and being built well, and orange is rapidly becoming our pr...
We are Still Working on the Driveway

Welcome to out 80 acre parcel of raw land in rural Maine, where the more work we put in, the worse the driveway seems to get. Our driveway is 1000' long and flanked by stone walls, and due to record breaking amounts of rain in New England the past 5 months, it's too muddy to drive. This is making progress tricky since schlepping tools and lumber down a quarter mile of ankle deep mud gets real o...
Exploring the Land

Welcome to out 80 acre parcel of raw land in rural Maine. With our prime objective out of the way (building an outhouse), its time to do some hiking. We're hoping to not end up with buyer's remorse when we see what all we actually bought. We only managed to cover half of what we own, since the deed mostly references stone walls as the property lines, and we have redundant ones going in all dire...
Building the Outhouse

It took us two weeks, but we got the most important build of the property complete: The Outhouse. Watch us build despite circumstances out of our control keeping us down, like thorny terrain, rocky soil, having to work for a living, and forgetting to bring the proper tools. Welcome to our 80 acre parcel of raw land in rural Maine, where we are making it up as we go.
Finding The Property

We bought a 80 acre parcel of raw land in rural Maine, and our first task was to hack our way into the heart of it. Our idealism told us we'd get it cleared, the camper back, the outhouse dug, and a well tapped in our four day time frame. Our environment, common sense, and back pain swiftly reminded us that things will happen at a realistic rate.
Keep going!!
Just discovered your channel. Love the content. Any new videos? Thanks.
Hi Jeremy! Thanks for the comment! We haven't made any new video recently, because we are back "home" in Michigan while we wait (spoiler alert!) To buy the neighbor's house. I may make some videos of what we are up to in the Midwest, but Maine videos won't be in the works again until the fall 🙂
Looking forward to seeing what you build in the fall (my wife and I love these homestead channels). Thanks for the update!👍
The chair scene is epic!!
Thank you! I don't know what was more fun, making the video, or burning the chair!
Had to watch it again. Even funnier than I remembered!
Love the mailbox!! You two are amazing!!
Thank you Linda! Isn't the post it's on really cool? We'll stain it when it's dry next spring - J really did a nice job on it.
I "lost it" when l seen the whole "pencil sharpening procedures ". Of course this is the BEST Outhouse l have ever seen. ! Just NOT a whole lot of talking ? Lots of NEW NOISY tools though......
Thank you! We think it's pretty sharp too!
Lol? Maybe not the chain saw😂
@@peopleinthewoodsmaine is at least 3 foot deep ....deep enough fot the hole and for 1 person use..thnx
Hi there! Funny comment about being antisocial ( the missing seat)! I laughed! What’s that small building at your site? Take care!
The property came with a little shack that someone had built and lived in years ago, but it's pretty ramshackle now, and it only good for storing tools. We call it, "The Ted Shed", like Ted Kazinski, haha
Just found you guys and subscribed! Sorry about your cat. Always sad when a pet passes. I think your caption said episode 4. If so I’ll try to catch up and watch the other ones tomorrow. Take care.T.
Glad you're here, Terry! And thank you, she was a very sweet little kitty, we will miss her.
I hate those caterpillars
They're cool looking but I'm afraid they'll bite... and they're EVERYWHERE
Great editing and music. When you can, it would be interesting to hear a bit of the history of your place, ie the rock walls along the driveway, who built them, when and....
That's a great idea! We are still getting to know our neighbors, but they all have been around a while and know about or have some connection to this land. Some have even given us potential housing sites, since they're walked it more than we have and know the good spot.
Always work to do when you make a decision to move to the woods. But the solitude will certainly be worth it. I really liked the entire William Tell Overture as well..... Thumbs Up!
Thank you so much! We love the peace in the woods, and we especially love the juxtaposition of classical music and dirty, messy work
Ngunu tok?
*Camping on the Deck of the Outhouse gives a whole new level of meaning to the term **_Convenience!!!_*
Never far from what we need!
I would focus less on asmr and more on the project footage. Otherwise good video, keep it up. 🤙🏼
Woah!!! So glad you guys are documenting this! Love that I get to join you in this adventure ❤️
Yes!! It's like we're living up at the cabin! We want the 'rents to be able to see what we are up to. Thanks for the follow ❤️
I can attest that he is a very patient teacher. Music choices have been spot on. Kudos to the editor. Also love that you actually added the crescent moon.
Looks awesome guys!! Already made a ton of progress. When your channel blows up don’t forget about us though haha. -Jacob (Your cousin)
We'll have to have you out when we've got the basic facilities, its gorgeous out here. One of these days we are hoping to pull a moose tag
Looking cool guys!! Love this edit. 😎😎
Thank you!!
Your favorite aunt carol is coming!! Better clear out another camping site 🤣
We'll clear a spot by the ✨️waterfall✨️ for you!
