Little tractor at Engine Show
This is the Little Tractor built by our father about 1950-1953 for my brothers and me. I brought it back to Colorado to save it from possible scraping in the future. This was at the 23rd Annual Ault Engine Show 8/02/2024. The grandson of the owner of the seed cleaner in the previous video was having a good time driving it around at the show. It currently is on its 3rd transmission setup, the 1st had no reverse, the 2nd used Maytag wringer washer parts in order to have reverse. The Maytag parts disappeared sometime during 50+ years of storage, so I used gear boxes that were donated by friends to get it going again.

Took my Ideal engine and a friends seed cleaner/fanning mill to the 2024 23rd Annual Ault Engine Show. I also took the Little Tractor that father built for my brothers and I back around 1950 - 53, we don't know exactly when it was built.
Only Detroit on the Job

Infrastructure is going in at the lower end of the property. They are using a sheep foot compactor for backfilling; it is the only Detroit 2 cycle powered machine on the job, the only I can hear inside the house with the windows closed. I don't mind it though; I am an old Detroit fan anyhow.
Cat D9 Attacking Harder Rock

As they have moved along the digging, it seems the rock has gotten harder to penetrate and now requires as much of the D9's weight as he can apply to the ripper teeth.
Cat D9 Helping Breakup the Rock.

When the excavator reaches the bottom of the cut, it has trouble breaking up the sandstone. The D9 with ripper makes short work of breaking up the sandstone and then pushing it within the reach of the excavator.
Digging & Hauling a Lot of Dirt
Просмотров 875 месяцев назад
This digging was started in 2022, then nothing until a few weeks ago. They have had as many as 8 trucks running at a time, at least 6 today (4/25/2024). Today was the first time that the closer excavator moved in. the dirt is being hauled a few miles away and being dumped in an open area and then being leveled off by a couple of graders, I have no idea what they are planning in the future at th...

Little Tractor Dad Built

This is the tractor our father built for my brothers and I around 1950. when he originally built it, it had no reverse, he later added Maytag wringer washer gearboxes, so we had reverse. After we outgrew it, a neighbor's youngest son used it to drive around their farm until he outgrew it. It then sat in their barn over 50 years until last August (2023) when I picked it up and brought it from ce...
Ideal Engine at its First Show

I took my Ideal engine to Ken Kafka's Open House in Pierce Colorado, a small get together of Ken's friends and neighbors. A good number of antique and classic cars and trucks show up to compliment Ken's collection of military trucks. A small number of antique engines usually show up, this year, just two, my Ideal and Roger Whites Chase engine.
A Closer Look at the Ignition and Governor
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.Год назад
I couldn't find any pics of the original ignition setup, so I used some old telephone contacts a friend gave me. Close quarters for mounting them, but they work just fine. The governor as I got it had the most wear and problems, a bent pivot shaft and wear that allowed the cam follower to flop around too much.
Ideal Hit & Miss Engine Running Again

Bought this Ideal engine several months ago with some small parts missing, bent, and broken. There was no ignition system except for the sparkplug, which it runs with now. It runs on a cordless drill battery and a Model T buzz coil.
Northwest and Bantam cable excavators at the 2023 Pageant of Steam

The Northwest operator seems to be very familiar with the operation of his machine. The operator of the Bantam is a trainee, he was just climbing in followed by the experienced operator that just stepped out as I got there.
Snow Blowing & Plowing in Marietta, NY

The blower is brought out when the banks get too high and thick to wing back. The plow truck was out on a training run, a new diver was learning the fine points of winging back the snowbanks. Unfortunately, I didn't get a lot of videos of the plow truck, with the windchill that day, my fingers were about to freeze.

Dragline Mining Gravel

I was in Cortland NY at a Yamaha dealer and noticed this dragline pulling gravel out of the pond. The valley here is mostly gravel that is full of water, dig a hole, and it fills with water.

Looking good, not the fastest laps 😁.. brings back memories.
Nice display!!! Looks like good weather too.
Interesting machine! Whereabouts are you located? I've never seen that style of compaction around where I am. Also is that an old army 5 ton truck being used as a water wagon I see?
Location is Johnstown Colorado, the highway in the background is I25. Yes, water truck appears to be an army 5-ton. I believe that compactors like this one are more commonly used in trash landfills. The sheep foot wheels do a better job of breaking down the trash and compacting it than a rubber-tired machine and no flat tires. Where are you from, don't they have landfills there?
That looks like some tough material. Good thing they had the D-9 to break it up so the CAT 349 excavator does not have to waste time chipping away at it. Nice video Paul.
I was surprised that he was having that much trouble penetrating the sandstone there, in the previous video the teeth were sinking in with little trouble. Sorry about some of the fuzzy video, somehow the autofocus on my camera got turned off.
초보인가?
Good
SALUDOS DESDE ESPAÑA 🙋♂️🇪🇸
Great video Paul, well done!
Good work Good Operating Nice video 👍
Are they trying to make it flatter, or less flat?
Not sure just what the objective was, they haven't done much out in that area of the property since 2022.
As the neighbor's youngest son, David Wicks, I lost use of right-side in a sledding accident at age 5 (TBI). While there were many things I could do, riding a bicycle was not in the cards. Paul's dad, Floyd and mine, Frank, best of country friends all their lives, arranged to have the "little tractor" provided me freedom to get around and cover MANY MANY MILES not only to enjoy driving but more to the point I had a place to vent my frustrations. Paul's dad drove a six-cylinder1955 Chevy station wagon, his pride and joy. When the tractor broke down, I remember getting off the school bus, speaking of frustrating times, Flold had fixed the problem, and I was able to ride again. Today in my early seventies, I often think of the time spent riding my "little tractor". I feel so fortunate to have had it in my life.
I am glad to be able to bring it back to operational condition, even though I had to use non original parts. At least the gear boxes were donated in true family tradition, Dad always tried to use whatever was available and inexpensive when building things for us kids and for the farm. Dave, I am not sure who put the most miles on it, me and my brothers or you, but it definitely traveled a long way in its life. Now maybe some of my grandkids will enjoy it until they outgrow it.
@@paulthompson5272 So nice to see it operational again! It's likely to serve many more generations!
u never work off the side u over dig and good by
Nice video! I just drove by the area and I was looking for the dragline, I’ve seen it in the past 👍🏻
fork lift version 0.5
So great to see it running again.
Cool engines 🤠
!!!
Guy really knows how to cast!
Only 2 engines...2 very interesting engines!
Did I hear you mention that it was originally used to run a milker? I was just looking at a DeLaval that one of our maintenance guys has, about the same size as the Ideal but more horizontal like that Chase
Not a milker, maybe a cement mixer. Had a roller chain sprocket on the shaft, typical of mixers.
Very cool, great to see the old stuff saved and restored.
Thanks for sharing! I'm very new to hit & miss engines - I have a 3HP Novo that looks similar to your Ideal. How long did you have it running at the show, and how much fuel do you think you used?
I ran it for about 4.5 hours, no idea how much gas it burned, just poured in some and ran it. Now I need to make a cart for it, a pallet jack doesn't work too good in the dirt.

Thanks for showing, great "little" machine, love it. 😃👍
Add an alternator to it
Nice! Getting it running s one thing, but getting it running that nice is great!
The more I tinkered with it, the better it ran. The first video it still was having some issues with the latch out, the vertical piece that tips underneath the cam follower was a tiny bit too tall and wouldn't always go under the follower.
Way cool Paul.....Dave
Just liked and subscribed. that saw is better than doing it by hand!
He can toss the bucket like a crank bait!
Can recall Certified Aggregates having a smaller dragline and doing the same type of work.
Never dig cross track in sand and gravel, good way to end up in the drink.......
The best part is driving under that on the way home though. 😖
Start pulling bucket before it hit bottom , track should be facing water to back aeay when needed. I did same job as this one working 11 years digging material from water to pile .
Вы серьёзно работали на таком драгдайне?
Yes I operated a dragline in coal mine for 3 years and dragline at sand & gravel for 11 years
I have stopped and watched you folks out there, one of these days I hope to have something to be able to join you
Thanks Richard, you could join the club and go to the events without owning a tractor. Club members sometimes have tractors for sale or may allow you to use an extra tractor during a plow day or parade.
We have a hd5 will hard yet today
Good machines, maybe a little outdated these days, but still able to do a lot of work.
good operator
I was impressed with his casting the bucket. I played with a dragline for a few minutes once when the boss had his for digging farm ponds, would have taken me quite a while to get anywhere near that good.
I was from Slaterville Springs I miss the green plants and all the other things. We used to go swimming in the creeks and down in the gorges. California can't hold a candle to the Finger Lakes for beauty and the town's with the small dairy farms. I wish I could go back but it would be cost prohibitive for me. But just seeing this video on is great thanks .
I am NOT a fan of HD 5 loaders, loud and slow, but I like that dozer, I would actually like to own one with a winch.
Great machine and restoration. Enjoyed excellent video.
Thank You
Where in the Finger Lakes was this filmed, if I may ask? I grew up in north Seneca county (town of Tyre). I now live in California. I had several uncle's that dairy farmed back east in the 50's to 70"s. Thank you for your video, much enjoyed it
It was at the Smith farm on Rt 414 north of Rt 318 in Waterloo.
I've seen alot of engines!! But never nothing like this!!! Is a model or a actual production engine?
It is a real engine, I don't think there was many built. The fellow that restored it (Marv Hedberg) also built a model of it first, then the owner of the real engine had Marv rebuild it.
Truly weird, where are the valves? From the video it looks like they might be in the piston??
The valves are in the base of the piston, the part that mounts the piston to the frame. There is some discussion of the engine on SmokStak.com, might have more details.
@@paulthompson5272 , so unusual thank you.
Very nice video
Are those their new E/F Super Hornets?
Looked up on internet, F/A 18 Super Hornet, that is what it said, other wise, I have no clue. They go by too fast to read anything on them.
I heard them all day long today at school.
Brother has the easy touch of a real operator and a 2-71 has a realo snarl to them too! Thanks!
He has been running HD5s (this is his 2nd one) since the early 70s. He also ran equipment for the county DOT since the late 60s.
@@paulthompson5272 Sounds like me. I started on a road job pulling a sheepsfoot in 69 and then Army and then a chauffeurs license at 21 and everything that went with it from then on. A good life but it'll catch up with you.
When the HD5G loader came out it was the only loader to come from the factory as a loader. All others Cat D4/T4 or the IH TD9 the loader was an attachment that you could put on. With the Cat and IH the grouser track plates had to be replaced with slick plates or you voided the warranty on the rear end. The HD5 was ahead of the time. It was a factory loader with 3 grouser track plates that had more tractive force than the other machines in her weight class.
Unbustable Detroit Diesel engine at work!
Now I finally understand all of the weird sounds machines made in the 50s cartoons
Some nice iron!
Love the sound of that Detroit!
This is his 2nd HD5, it has a good stock "football" muffler. His first one had a rusted out muffler that we replaced with a homemade manifold and a Thrush glasspack muffler.
