Inside ASL CPA: What Makes This Firm a Top Employer
I'm an accounting sophomore. One browse on LinkedIn, and you will see every single accounting position in a city has >100 applicants but yet the positions are still open. That tells me that people are applying for a position that they're ultimately not taking. Working for a big tech/investment firm lends more prestige, benefits, and pay. That's where accounting has to compete heaviest. Guys will work 60 hours a week for the right coin and status.
I'm confused, everybody's talking about how there's a huge shortage but then y'all said that there's thousands of applicants for remote positions. I'm due to graduate fall 2027, how's it looking for me Y'all think?
It's a strange one. Mixed messages. Accounting should be a safe career bet as all firms need to grow and take in more staff.
Insightful
Is it WORTH pursing this profession though? Considering AI and the years to come of technology that has YET to unfold! Why not just go for data science, AI and machine learning, careers that pose no threat of becoming obsolete or replaced! Add to the fact that the earning potential is way higher with LESS work? I’d love to pursue this degree coming from community college with an associates in business admin with the potential to go to a university for 2 more years to obtain a BS in accounting but im HIGHLY reconsidering this route. Thoughts?
Can't fault your logic. Go for it!
So pursuing a bachelors in accounting and potentially becoming a CPA is still worth it and has high earning potential?
Intuit and other companies should be ethically bound to put those employees through training and help them shift and add value.
While I respect the efforts of those working on the talent pipeline, I believe their current strategies are ineffective. Accounting academic enrollment is declining year over year due to various factors with pay being the biggest. Accounting salaries will likely never reach the levels of those in software development. A software developer with ten years of experience may accumulate thousands of dollars in stock or equity compensation, a level of compensation rarely seen in accounting. Not to mention the workloads and very long hours. I've been in accounting/finance since 2011 between public and private and not for profit. They all share the same thing. Way low pay and high workload.
Starting my degree at WGU in feb- hope theres room for a hard working, focused, and long term worker to earn a modest living
1. there is NO shortage 2. MOST number jockeys DO NOT make $50/hr
I’m coming baby, just opening FAR now!
I have a question. Here's a bit of background about me first though. I am 52 years old. I work in the oil and gas industry in northern Alberta (Canada). It is a physically demanding job. I used to teach university and I have a couple of university degrees. I have completed Statistics, Intro do Financial Accounting and Intermediate Financial Accounting. I have done these courses through Athabasca University, a fully accredited university in Canada. There are 23 courses required to become a CPA if one already has a university degree, which I do. I also work night shift and can study a lot at night when at work. I think I can get all the remaining courses done in five years or less, likely four years if I work hard. I'd like to try my hand at accounting because I'd like a less physically demanding job and I'd also like to work until I am 75 years old. I don't want to retire until I have to. If I worked from the time I was 57 until, say 70 years of age (not at all unreasonable in this day and age). What kind of career could I have? I'd like to put my nose to the grindstone and advance as quickly as I can. I realise that there is also a CPA exam(s) to be completed in addition to all the courses I'd need. Could I make a six figure salary within five years or less? I am interested in this partly because I'd love to start a father and son firm with my son when he is older. It's not the only reason but it is also a consideration. I know that I'd need experience and know how before I take that kind of a financial risk. Is opening my own firm after having five years experience realistic? I'd do the 70 hour work weeks in the beginning. My employer doesn't need to know that I am doing this with the goal of eventually quitting and starting my own firm. I appreciate your comments!
Corporate model 😅
Might be recession proof but seeing Minneapolis accounting salaries + the highly specialized skills and ghost jobs, I beg to differ on the "recession proof". Who wants to walk back their salary by 50% and still get worked like a slave. I have a strong background and cannot find work. I have a sound resume and interview well. I think companies are super hesitant right now. The economy is signaling red alarms in my opinion and that impacts accountants too.
You might be right. Crazy times.
9 Year CPA here. It's not worth it anymore. If I could go back, I would not pick accounting. I'm currently not working and I can't find a job. The job posting are now asking for controllers at 80-100k salary in high cost areas. Staff accountants at 40-60k with at least 2 years experience! What?!? I started at 60k with no experience and that was 9 years ago! Adjusted for inflation, these salaries are trash, absolute trash. 5 years of college, plus a grueling CPA exam which was not cheap for me, and I'm still jumping through hoops without finding good jobs. Also, employers are requiring super specialized accountants. I saw a job posting the other day that required like 4 different company specific softwares (not microsoft suite) for their staff accountant. Accounting is dead.
Hey - staff accountant here, with a sliver of audit experience. Was considering whether to commit to accounting firms vs trying something new. Mind if I ask you a few questions? Also subbed.
Sure. Reach out on LinkedIn.
Lol a company I used to work for was struggling to find accountants who were willing to work at the start salary they offered that we ended up hiring finance majors. Didn't end well.
If there's really a talent shortage of CPAs, then states should make it easier for already educated professionals in other fields to become a CPA by using their existing college degrees and augmenting their training instead of making them go all the way back to college for 4+ years. I have a BS in electrical engineering and MS in computer science. I'd like to become a CPA but I'm older now and I can't afford to go back to school for many many years to get another college degree when I already have two. Surely there is a more efficient way for me to gain the skills I would need. In terms of complexity, accounting is about a million times less complex than software development. If I can be a software developer, I could practically fall out of bed and be an accountant.
Tuning in from outside practice (Financial Controller at an SME). I'm keen to keep abreast of the digital transformation sweeping the profession and, having always been pretty digitally savvy, I've recently been undertaking something of a personal digital skills audit (as you suggest). What I'm finding from a data analytics and automation point of view is that AI (Chat GPT, Copilot etc) hugely speed up any automation project I embark upon. Previously, to figure out how to implement a new step in a process might involve a whole load of research and trial and error - AI tools have reduced this time greatly. I can't see AI wholly replacing data analysts and coders, but there's a huge augmentative role for AI. I'm not a Python, SQL, DAX or Power BI expert, but I can confidently work with them with the AI assistance now at my fingertips.
Good for you embracing the new AI world. You're one of the outliers!
You're doing a fantastic job! I have a quick question: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). Could you explain how to move them to Binance?
Accountant's and Auditors are generally challenged at being effective good leaders. Leaderships are lacking in the Executive, Management, and lead levels.
Unfortunately you are right.
Great video - also applies to lawyers to some extent 👍🏼
Yes you're right!
Now that IT is oversaturated with excess labor, I fear Accounting will be the next big thing corporations will push for.
Thanks for sharing such valuable information! A bit off-topic, but I wanted to ask: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
i have to choose between accounting and finance, i dont wish for the ever competitive finance role but i also know that the first couple of years of accounting has very little pay and very monotonous and consists of grunt work and i dont think id be able to persevere through that before ending up quiting.
Typical accountant - speak many words, say very little

Im so happy to find this channel , thank you for making this channel❤😊
Everyone in the profession is talking about the 150 credit hours and the pay disparity with other careers. But the reality is that’s just the peak of the iceberg. A bigger issue is the lack of training, teaching and mentoring of new graduates specially in the public accounting space. I see so many hungry, talented and enthusiastic graduates get completely discouraged out of the profession because no one was there to trained them or mentor them. I see so many public accounting firms doing massive layoffs abusing graduates during busy season and laying them off right after. The AICPA really wants change, start with placing accountability on the big public firms for these huge abusive layoffs and start demanding CPA holders to act as mentors and teachers to the new generation. All those 40 credit hours of non sense CPE credits to maintain a license that does not teach the holder be a teacher, to be patient, to lead by example, to mentor to keep the profession going. Let’s talk about that.
Everything you read out there on higher demand and low supply is a bunch of nonsense. The reality is an entry level Accountant has to have a university degree. The clerical roles have been moved to shared services abroad that are purely transactional. So a mid level accountant not specializing in taxes will have to deal with: financial reporting, regulatory compliance, multi-location management, internal/external audits, sox - if out of luck, in addition to kpis, and supporting everyone else because “they are not good with excel”. To top it off you make slightly more than what an inexperienced accountant was earning 10 years ago but your cost of living has gone up 50%. It is a nightmare job subject to the whims of leadership. You are the fall guy to a bunch of sales driven team of amateurs who can’t close a deal unless their bonus is on the line. My fellow accountants: Speaking from the heart - stay away from this profession. Not because you can’t handle the work load but because the decent pay is not there and neither the appreciation.
Sadly your opinion is shared by many good people who are leaving the accounting profession or not even coming into it.

Excellent insight, thank you
I’m happy am leaving this profession for Nursing. Travel Nurses makes more $$$ than accountants.
It honestly shouldn't be this difficult but this will surely help; make sure your new joiners understand what your firm does and how it competes with other accounting firms. Additionally, make sure your new joiners understand what firms they'll be serving and what you expect of them on a weekly basis in order to serve this client. Simply making it clear what you expect of your new joiners and how their role fits in the cogs of their general machine will help a lot.
Accounting firms need to make accounting sexy again. This involves instilling the idea that what you do has serious consequences and thus can only be handled by the most competent of individuals who value a sense of responsibility. After having done that, it also requires firms to give these talented individuals actual responsibility with clients as opposed to clients that simply need a compliance document to go on with their day-to-day business. Firms need to add added value, which can either be done by increasing the scope of their services (advisory in tax or finance) or improving on the way they do regular accounting work by means of automation and advising clients on how to automate their own work. Once this is done, remote or hybrid work can be negotiated on, but requiring on-site work 5 days a week is unrealistic.
Great remarks here. I can't disagree with anything you've said!
All your guests appear to be American. Are you based out there? I had assumed you were UK based.
We are UK based but our audience is 50% US. We have an English guest coming up next week!
Good remuneration package is key to attract talent. Without that you can add all sorts of bells & whistles but no one will bite. And to retain that talent you need to foster a good work culture & work life balance with clear paths for career development.

Accounting Influencers I asked you why are we always hearing in the news there is an accounting shortage. You have answered other peoples questions. Please try to answer mine.
We're just reporting how accounting firms are struggling to hire enough of the right staff.
Great content. Thank you! I think where things are going to change also is on the fact that less and less firms are going public due to compliance costs. Especially, in the US. Audit Analytics Ideagen has an insightful report for either June or July 2024 which shows that audit fees are increasing while number of filing firms are decreasing and this has been the trend for quite sometime. Not even touching to the point that how the quality of audit process for many firms is. In my opinion, another accounting / auditor scandal may exacerbate PE take over of the accounting firms. Thank you for bringing the discussion different thoughts and even possible directions.
That not true. People only hire their own kind. I’m a minority and I get discriminated all the time.
Many accounting firms are msking efforts with diversity.
What does it mean for the accounting profession? Get out the checkbook. Other jobs pay better for less education.
You're right, and while this is changing slowly, less people are taking accounting degrees.
Not getting a job. Companies pay peanuts and take advantage of us. Just working as an independant bookkeeper. Making a ton of money and work on my own schedule.. Fuck corporate America.
Thank you! This was enjoyable to listen to
PE is doing immense damage in health care sector. Be careful what you wish for. Sound quality is better.

Do you think pursuing a accounting degree in 2025 is still worth it?
That's a great question. A career in accounting is a great thing, but whether you need a degree to achieve that is another matter.
@@accountinginfluencers Thank you ☺️
Why is it so hard to get entry level position?
It shouldn't be. Most firms have vacancies.
