Benchmade Bugout first week impression
I have had three defective pairs of the 411 traction Treads they developed the worst squeak in between the midsole and I was so mad. Luckily Red Wing honored them but after the second time they started getting an attitude with me
The Patriot could technically be rebuilt but they won’t do it, mainly because the price of a rebuilt is very close to the price of the boot.
The difference in the stitching for the Patriot is that they omit the McKay stitching which is the inner stitching on the sole. The McKay stitching is done standard on their other models. For comparison Nicks Boots has omitted the McKay stitching on all their models as a standard.
Def do a side by side of the Franks Patriot and Nicks BuilderPro
Es una réplica del Rolex Submariner.😊
Aunque su bisel unidireccional es un poco duro.
Yo lo tengo, esta muy bonito y de buena calidad en materiales.
I have a pair super comfy and durable
Let’s just look at it. Look at it. For a minute just look at it
I own the patriots and the type One commanders and you’ll notice that the type one Commanders and the Nicks builder pros have a 1 inch thick sole, Whereas the patriots are 3/8 thick which also makes a difference in break in. I agree I wish Nick went with a stain-based finish instead of the water base, but they feel that it keeps it easier from ruining carpet and other things. Lincoln wax has a good black stain for boots that isn’t water-based. You’re right about them using from different areas of the hide. So with the patriots some pairs you might see scars or other imperfections from the cow But the commanders will be the higher end of hide and still be the same thickness
Also I wear a 10 D in normal boots and got a 9D in the patriots and the fit is perfect I also went with a 8.5D in the Type 1 and it also fits perfect I was nervous with the sizing, but Frank is also a 10D in boots and talking with him he assured me this would be the right size, I don’t have a wide foot either and in the #4 toe I didn’t have to go to the E width like the website shows.
I forgot to mention the type one commanders come with the McKay lockstitch and the patriots do not. Frank is the only PNW Bootmaker who still uses that kind of stitching mix used to use it, but they’ve recently quit.
It cuts ziptie? Amazing! Why don't you try it on bolt since it's called a boltcutter.
If your Commander convo was about using the 1977 last (the #4 toe) then going down a half size makes total sense.
Little history and family Franks brother started Nicks hand made boots in 1964 they are brothers so Franks is keeping it old school
Frank's brother is named Nick, and Frank's brother Nick was primary owner (Frank minority) for many years, but Frank's brother did not start Nick's. Different Nick.
I hear Frank's uses thicker leather than the Nick's, so does it seem like a significant difference apart from the sizing issue? Casts for sure, but break in after 8 months should be about done, right?
Oh, so these were actually easier, then. Good t' know.
They don't seem to offer these in my size at that price, tho. I think that's why I passed on them back in December or January already and Nick's was running some special on a leather that I didn't end up getting either or something. I always end up paying extra or something but at least the boots came well ahead of delivery schedule by two months or something.
You could just get these rebuilt with steel toes and then that might solve the width problem, too.
Not sure if much cheaper than buying third pair with shipping cost, but if you're using them only at work where you wish you had steel toes....................
I finally bought steel toe boots at a job where I probably should have been using them all along for a couple years and didn't find them as horrible as most people warned. I imagine they had never worn steel toes before, but they had insulated shaft that didn't do diddly for keeping the feet warm in winter, tho. I'm not in a very frigid climate, tho, so only an issue for a month or so in January most years.
You could get the honey sole instead of wedge style.
I don't know if any of the PNW wedge sole boots offer any of that same arch support. Maybe Nick's has one model that does and I might look into that more next year.
How are the insides how is the insole? Do they have cushion throughout? Are they hard to take off being so high up and does heel get caught?
They are full leather. No actual cushion. It’s uncomfortable at first, but breaks in within a week or so for me. The leather insole will form to your feet making them comfy. Hard but comfy. They open up more than you’d think. Easy to get on and off. Do they get caught? On like stuff? Maybe a bit. Gets caught mostly on those cross beam things on chairs. Not too bad.
@@dossreviews Okay and I meant like when you pull the boot off is it hard to get off and put on? How are they in the summer with the temperatures?
No. They’re easy to put on and off. Maybe a bit harder than a 6 inch boot. But they open so wide it’s not too bad. You’ll sweat in the heat for sure. Never been uncomfortable. But noticeable. If that makes sense. I did have to get a boot dryer to keep the sweat down. I was sweating so much I was getting salt stains on the outside of the boot.
And I live in New Mexico. Gets really hot here
@@dossreviews Ah okay don’t think I could handle a boot like that with the way I sweat. Maybe I should just with 6 inch
I just got that in the mail and it don’t cut 5/16 hex head sheet metal screws!!
Great review guy. love my redwing shoes. Like the green laces lol
And it... will kill (in forged in fire voice). Love Knipex 👍👍👍👍👍
Would be good for cutting hooks. Nice
They’re really pretty nifty
@@dossreviews definitely look like it!
I love it when Amazon screws up. Nice score buddy. You should have bought a bunch !....😁
Btw.....once a week is fairly often...lol
I’m curious if anyone has any issues with shock absorption with these boots on hard surfaces?
Best I can say is I’ve jumped like 4 feet down onto concrete and it actually didn’t hurt. And I’m like 240 pounds.
You work retail? Those boots look like you work on a dirt road
They’ve retired to a life of being yard work boots.
If made by Knipex, you will pay higher prices, but it is worth every cent.
As for crimping ferrules and sleeves, on wire rope, buy a real swager, like an Arm Sangyo. People are risking their lives with those uncalibrated crimps.
Good point! My crimps prevent people from stealing stuff. Not a life and limb thing.
I've got a pair of an earlier version of these. Plain red handles. Missing the rotary locking mechanism. They're small and very handy. Diagonal cutters work fine on zip ties. Felco C7 or Knipex wire rope cutters both work way better on wire rope. The $13 Felco clones also work and are much less painful to lose.
Another good point! I know for me, cutting wire rope isn’t super common for me to do, just wanted to show the versatility! For sure if you’re doing wire rope all the time, wire rope cutters are definitely the way to go!
How much did the leather loosen up? I just bought mine and they’re snug but i dont know if i should go a half size down.
I bought mine a tad big, so I don’t think it loosened up too too much. Mainly just crease points where your bit bends when you walk. What’s your brannock size and what size did you get? I went a half size bigger than my brannock.
5:00 look up military lacing techniques. You'll find a way to eliminate the pinching.
How do you get the rough out? Looks like they only have smooth leather now.
I believe Franks said it was a limited thing. For me, it was an in stock option that got to me in like a week. But they stopped doing it. They’re good people over at Franks, they might work with you if you give em a call. But they’re not on the website anymore.
@@dossreviews I see... I messaged them about it, so we'll see if they can.
it if it lasts you at least 3 years i say it’s worth every penny. that’s like $20/mo for 36month. the longer the last just shines it’s value
Very good way to think of it!
They still look great. Clean them and they will look good as new
You should hear your self really. Man up!
For 14 months hard use they look very good. I am waiting for my robert I’ve ordered 9 weeks ago.You are saying that your Red wings are width D and Builders are F. I was thinking that RW and Nicks are fitting similar.
Red wing was 10 D and my builder pros are 9.5 D. I kept my brannock size of 9.5 D for my nicks because I like the room. If I said F, I misspoke.
But I like a bit of extra room in my footwear. 10 D felt best on my redwings, and 9.5 D feels great in my nicks.
Looks good
Even if you don’t have a reason to get one get it anyway you will not regret it
Would you just look at it!
I used to use the Iron Laces too until I realized the wear they will put on my eyelets. I found fatter leather laces that won't stretch so easily and I like those a lot better. Idk, maybe it isn't something to worry about or maybe you personally don't mind/care but I found I just prefer the leather laces over anything. Just gotta get some fatties. Also they look better than anything else and they stay tied, so there's that.
Guess I didn’t realize they made fat leather laces. Will have to keep an eye out for those, because I hadn’t thought about wearing down the eyelets.
@@dossreviews I'm honestly not sure how common it is or how quickly it would happen - just heard of it as a possibility. I don't feel like sending my boots out (locally or not) to replace eyelets. What a pain.
Speed hooks are the main problem...the power cord type laces are more prone to trapping fine bits of dirt and grime and they sort of act like a saw on your speed hooks over time. Leather laces are indeed much better imo.
I want to be the one the scuffs up my boots. Come on Franks, a couple of plastic bags cost almost NOTHING.
About a year later, you still wearin em? Are you still enjoying? I'm about a month in on my Builder Pro's and I did the same as you, jumped right in wearing them for the first time during a 12 hour shift, that shit sucked but it was well worth it looking back.
I am! Just splitting my time with these and franks patriot boots. BPs for work most days, then patriots for days off. I’ve been lazy and haven’t done a video yet for the one year. Overall they’re great. Pretty well water proof, at least for just being in the elements. And just gets comfier with time. The heel is wearing a bit faster than I’d like, but better than my Chippewa loggers by far. But I do a lot of walking.
mmm i dont condition my boots untill first half a year i just accept a bit of sorenesstbh tho for 350 the boot is alot better than anything else for the price ever seen a thursday boot made in america? now thats what u call trash quality and poorly made haha
Extremely good video thanks
Nice kicks! Try some Fiebings edge dressing on that midsole if you want to keep them blacked out.
I have the same problems that you I have really high instep and it just takes time to break in and 50/50 HO2 and 70 rubbing alcohol and time heat inside the leather stretch time
Consider the caustic chemicals that wet grass probably had in it. They spray with nasty stuff sometimes..nice boots
Did you mention goat heads?
Just think if you actually wanted to take care of them
The hot spots that you get, you should use the 50/50 solution and spray on those spots before you oil them. I have both th T1 and the Patriots the T1 took 2 months to break in and maybe a week for the patriots. Thanks for the video.
I ordered the full rough out. How do you think it's different having the upper smooth like that?
If your uppers are covered by pants, not much difference. If you like to wear shorts and boots, the rough out will make the leather more scratch resistant than smooth out. Otherwise I think it’s personal opinion on the looks. Rough out will smooth over time, with pants constantly wearing on it. So I think the patina will look better, but unless the boots are exposed due to shorts, or you’re going through mesquite bushes and getting those needles in your boot uppers all the time, not much difference. Also if you climb trees and have extra abrasion on the uppers, all rough out would come in handy.
Can’t beat a pair of Nicks
Doesn't sound like you're letting them rest a day between wears. Could be why.
I’m doing that now. When I broke in my nicks, I just wore them straight. No breaks. Tried the same. But not working this time.
