Under-rated channel. I've been running nights playing the Aliens AGDITC boardgame, where I basically GM'd since there is a lot of logistics to get new/many players through and keep track of everything. I have thought of this starter set too, while it sounds awesome and right up my alley, I've never actually run a roll play before so I have to admit, this one sounds quite intimidating for me to learn. Will think about it, cheers/subbed.
That looks like a fun game. I want to try out some Alien board games now.
This sounds really interesting. I'm more surprised the game only came out in 2019 & not sooner.
That’s how I want to go
Woo! Dying horribly and alone in the vast expanse!
I know this was about The One Ring, but you said something about how you were struggling at first because you were leaving stuff up to the dice was hard for you. And you gave your example of the orcs and the. Said “This isn’t how I’d run this for players, I wouldn’t leave it all up to chance. I’d have stuff that was going to happen no matter what.” And I don’t people understand how important this passing statement was. I see so many people play solo ttrpgs as “gmless” but this isn’t true. The game still has a GM, thats you. The oracles are there to add randomness and twists to keep things interesting to us, but the majority of solo ttrpgs out there will say “Follow the narrative and use dice only when you need to.” This is because it is still mostly us making the story happen just like a GM at a table would. I think so many people struggle with solo TTRPG because they think they’re not supposed to do this. That the oracles are purely supposed to drive and they just sit back and experience the story. Then they flop and flounder and don’t find it fun and run off to Reddit to talk about how they don’t get it. Once I understood I’m still playing the role of a GM, it changed solo TTRPGs for me so much, and I mean in a really good way.
This is a good reminder for me as well. I've been testing out the Moria solo rules and have been finding it challenging. But I've got to remember to prep a solo game the same way I would a group game. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
@@willattheworldsend thanks for the video! I know it was a passing statement, but it was a mentality shift that took solo ttrpgs from unplayble, to enjoyable for me. I wonder if a lot of people who struggle with solo ttrpgs would have more fun with this approach.
Just a quick question that isn't related to the fun adventure detailed here in this video. Tthe Custom Blank Sheets in your Ko-fi shop are very nicely made, but the sides of them appear to be just geometric shapes, rather than the intricate scrollwork and symbols seen here in this video. Do you also have blank maps with the more elaborate borders for sale anywhere, or only the simpler ones with geometric shapes? For clarity's sake, I don't mean the red along the top an bottom, but rather the borders on the left and right.
@Cyricistic Sorry, I don't have the more detailed versions up anywhere. That was using the official Free League pages, which I don't have the rights to use or share. They're also more complicated than I know how to replicate, but maybe I should try again.
Where did you get those tokens? They seem very well-made!
@Cyricistic Thanks! I made those right in After Effects, I think.
Did you try strider mode with this settings? Es the white towers?
@andreasilvestrini1199 I haven't used any Ruins of the Lost Realm content with Strider Mode. I have used Tales from the Lone Lands and Moria.
@@willattheworldsend do you think it's possible use that ruins for strider mode? How do you play with them?
@@andreasilvestrini1199 It should be possible. I find it helpful to set up the adventure in the same way I would if I was going to run it for other players. So if there are any notable set-pieces or events have them ready to go and include some elements that are connected to your character's story. Obviously, as the LM you are going to know everything so there won't be any surprises, but your character doesn't know everything. Use the telling table and the other tables from Strider Mode to introduce some random elements as you go. That's how I'd do it at any rate. Running an rpg solo is a tricky thing. Probably watch some videos of people that do it a lot to get some pointers. Hopefully this helps.
Thanks for uploading this. Hope to see more guides in future!!!
I have been looking forward to this!
Are you thinking of creating scenarios for Alien like you have done for The One Ring? (Which are all excellent, by the way)
Thanks! I don't currently have any plans for that. I have some big One Ring projects I'm working on so that will take up all my writing time for the next few months. I also don't think I know enough about the Alien universe to really write good stuff for it.
Great break down of character building! I like the personal goals and achievements and how they can play into the game!
Hi, this is really good. Do you think you will make the conversion to lord of the rings 5e?
Hmm, I had not thought of that. At some point I would like to make a few more 5e videos but I've got quite a few other videos that need to get finished first so it will be a while.
@@willattheworldsend alright, thank you for your answer!
Really helpful and useful video. Thank you.
Around 2000 I fell in with a group playing 1977's Chivalry and Sorcery 1st edition who not only did not know that there had been 2 editions since then, and was about to be a fourth, but they only had the main rulebook, and did not know there had been supplements
The One Ring can also be played solo if i am not misstaken in strider mode. 5E does not have that option.
Is the setting shoehorned into being repetitive, ie the synthetic working its own agenda; kill the xenomorph before the Company can capture it for use in a secret weapons program; survive an infestation until help arrives? How many scenarios can a GM extract from the setting?
That is something I'm not sure of yet. It certainly could get repetitive if the GM or the published adventures don't get creative, but that would be the same with any game. I think having different types of aliens as well as different human factions with their own agendas you can create some fun scenarios if you subvert some expectations.
you should check out the dune role playing game by modiphius. it’s pretty good
Where are the character sheet for companion
Currently they're not anywhere to download. But if you have the Moria book they're on pages 227 and 228.
Super helpful, thank you!
How different is 2nd Edition compared to the first. I have all the first edition books I got from Humble Bundle years ago.
@SB-yn7mj I'm afraid I can't help you there. I only started playing with 2e, so I'm not too aware of what the changes are. The main one that I know of is the time period and setting. 2e takes place closer to The Lord of the Rings than 1e did and focuses on Eriador instead of east of the Misty Mountains.
Ah okay! Thank you though. I've never played a TTRPG before and don't have a big group either. I'm hoping to implement some of the Strider rules to go through 1E campaigns.
@@SB-yn7mj Amazing! If you use Discord at all there is a great community for The One Ring. Lots of people on there have played 1e so they'd be able to help a lot plus people have made lots of 1e-2e conversions, adventures, and other stuff that might be of interest to you.
Great interview, here and GRH both, thanks!
Hey there! Im just getting into the One Ring, but have some experience with different systems and their magic. I love that you create this as I know one of my players would LOVE to play an Istari. I have some ideas that I would love your thoughts on as I'm still new to the rules overall: One of the magic systems i've played in allows you to conduct any magic that you want - you think of it, and it happens. The catch however is that the less "subtle" it is (i.e. the more it doesn't make sense in the real world, for example: conjuring up a big fireball out of thin air, and hurling it at the enemy, the higher the consequences are (you roll on a consequence table). If, on the other hand, it very subtle, such as just making a campfire a bit bigger...seems that could probably happen anyways, so almost no consequnces. I'm wondering how this could fit in to the One Ring and the Fatigue system. I.e A wizard making his voice a bit more foreboding would be minor fatigue, but the "YOU SHALL NOT PASS" and cracking a bridge with lightning so to speak, would cause much more fatigue. All determined by the Like I said, i'm new to the rules, but I feel like it your idea of fatigue would fit great with this: The GM states how much fatigue they would acquire as you mentioned - so maybe these spells are good "examples". What's not clear from your video however, is do you ROLL for the spell to occur? And if it causes damage, how would you determine that. Would love a discussion!! Thanks!
I think your idea could certainly work. The One Ring also has an Eye Of Mordor mechanic to it so you could mix and match consequences a bit. So a spell might have a mix of Endurance* loss and/or attract the attention of the Eye. *I made some changes to the Istari culture to have casting spells result in Endurance loss instead of Fatigue. Fatigue takes a lot longer to remove so gaining Fatigue from spells would quickly make the character a bit useless. As for rolling for spells, in "The Wizard's Staff" box on the second page I have players use their Combat Proficiency in Staves to cast spells against their Wits TN. Hope this helps and if your player does end up using it, I'd love to hear their thoughts on it.
@@willattheworldsend Hi there! Thanks for the response! I'll definitely have to get familiar with the rules more to really see if Fatigue vs Loss of Endurance is better, but for now i'll take your word for it! However, from what I remember reading Gandalf didn't use his powers very often, so maybe less frequent and affecting fatigue is more in line with what Tolkien had in mind. I'm never a big fan of rolling for magic to happen or not (have played games where that happens and it just never fits the narrative and is disheartening for the player when it costs so much resources). But I could see for damage, etc a roll would be needed; but as I mentioned, I'll have have to familiarize mysefl with the rules. I'll let you know my thoughts as I go!
@@DGB_Smyth That's a good idea to have magic just work. Especially when it costs Fatigue or Endurance. I feel like some of the spells will need to be more powerful than I originally had them to help it be worth the cost.
@@willattheworldsend They could be, i'm not quite sure how punishing the Endurance mechanic can be as I haven't played yet, but I think an Endurance loss of 1-4 based on the LM discretion could cover most things - and if it is a damaging spell, or one where, say, there would be "resistance" from an NPC, then you could roll a target number for its effect. So therefore MOST spells would just autowork, but if they involve an NPC, then a roll may be needed. Something like that
I have the starter set and have run most of it for some friends (we ran out of time to finish things). Overall impressions are v positive, the pre written quests are really low states hijinks which means they can completely ignore the shadow points mechanics (something that I'd love to play around with in a longer campaign but isn't essential for running the core rules of the game). The maps are great as mentioned, and the equipment cards are extremely useful. My main criticism is just how linear the adventures are, I understand why in a starter module you'd want the training wheels on but I also think they could have expanded out the starter adventures with some more options as to how the players might acheive their aims. It plays out as a bit like a telltale game where players are along for the ride and making dice rolls at key moments rather than properly having their own adventures.
How do we know that the Severe Injury takes 6 days to heal? I couldn't find it anywhere how long a Wound takes to heal.
Right, I didn't make that fully clear in the video. When you roll on the Wound Severity Table, if you get a 1-10, the Wound takes as many days to heal as the result of the die. In this example I rolled a 6 so it will take 6 days to heal.
@@willattheworldsend By the way, I have also been the editor for the Portuguese edition of Vampire the masquerade, Mage the Ascention, Gurps 4th edition, I was elected as the editor/writer for the Living Forgotten Realms RPGA Campaign in 4th edition for Latin America that edited all 4th editions adventures for Baldur's Gate at that time, I am also editor for Cyberpunk, and The Witcher... and I also building a Multimidia RPG Campaign Setting for 5th edition
That is quite the impressive list of projects! What does a multi-media campaign setting entail?
I agree that it does initially sound complicated but your video definitely helps! Thanks!
Great video and explanation, good job. I cannot express how much I love the Moria book; and this solo mode is a gem I'd say, as finding a group or time is not easy either but you get to experience it which might give further inspiration and ideas for normal play.
I appreciate your video's, thank you for it. I'm curious - if you were to create a new TOR game for new players, what will you incorporate from Moria?
That is a tough question. There's a lot in Moria that I like. I think for my solo play, I'll start out as slave dwarves who get a chance to escape. That'll get right to the action, and instead of exploring Moria, the whole adventure will be about getting out. This could work well for new players as well.
Minis is a big plus for me! I play in person with my friends and have been using the figures from another glorious day, which work fine, but I've always wanted more variety! So awesome to hear they plan on supporting long term
When will you do a review on Moria?
It will probably still be a while. I have a few Alien videos to do, and I need to find the time to actually play Moria a bit.
@@willattheworldsend OK, you take all the time you need, and don't feel like you have to play just for RUclips and have fun! 😃:)
With the updated version with a failed introduction roll, it would set the time limit to 3. If the roll is a success, the time limit is equal to 4, plus 1 for each Success icon rolled. As an example, a bold request ( 6 ) would have to succeed with at least one 6 each attempt if they only get to roll 3 times.
Thanks for the update. Sadly, a lot of my videos are out of date since the rule changes.
Wow, these rules are much more in depth than I imagined they would be! Thank you for for the video, very clear and easy to follow.
Hi Will! Two questions- 1. Would this system work well outside Moria? Would it work with multiple player-heroes? I'm imagining a game where like the Hobbit, with Bilbo, Thorin, Balin, Fili, and Kili as PHs and the rest of the dwarves as a band! 2. How do you gain new members after a loss?
1. Yes, this system would work perfectly outside of Moria. The rules do include a little section about having 2 players, I'm not sure how it would go with more than that. I suppose it could work but it might slow down play with that many players but I expect it would be better to just use regular rules for it. 2. Throughout your game any friendly NPCs could potentially join your band. During a Fellowship Phase you can choose "Recruit Allies" as a Fellowship Undertaking.
@@willattheworldsend thank you! All makes sense
Thanks i was literally looking for a video on this topic yesterday. I agree its alot to wrap your head around. Im thinking to stick with strider mode for now and if i start gathering allies, see how the Moria rules play out.
Are the solo rules in the Moria book, or is this a new pdf like Strider Mode? I’m just picked up the core rulebook last week and haven’t been able to play yet, but the Moria expansion was definitely the reason I picked it up.
These solo rules are included in the Moria book. You don't need to buy Strider Mode for this. However, Strider Mode has a few different rules for playing a solo hero without a band.
Are all the Strider mode rules contained within? Does it make the Strider mode booklet redundant?
@@tnttiger3079 Basically all the same rules are there with a few minor changes. A number of the random tables are slightly different but mostly the same. Strider Mode also includes some Patron Quest ideas and a bit more information on what a Solo RPG is. It does seem to make Stride Mode a little redundant but I'm not sure yet. I haven't sat down to actually play through a game playing Moria solo so I'll have to do that for a bit and see.
How do I get this supplement?
You can find it here: ko-fi.com/s/a5c1caeaad
Your maths are a bit off there for your TN numbers 20-5 for strength isn't 13 and the same with the rest of the TN. Or am I just thick?
I used the alternate TN of 18. However, I did forget to mention it in the video.
Thank you for a relevant and inspiring review, I've had this book in my shopping cart for a while now. I love all the books from this game. I havent had a chance to play it yet but I collect them in vain hope for a future campaign for my regular players :D This campaignbook is pure magic in its sweet sad poetic name and the vast and unforgiving landscape of the cover art. For me, it brings back the sweet nostalgia of reading Tolkien for the first time as a 13 year old <3
Love it! Very envious of all the RPGs that you get to explore!
I wonder if there's a good way to have wizards use Hope as their spell-casting resource. Maybe give them more ways to regain Hope to balance it out (as an additional reward for rolling 6s on ability tests perhaps?) I like the thought of a wizard growing closer to darkness the more magic they use, and needing to take a break to compose themselves lest they fall prey to the temptations of their power. But players will have to decide when to hold back, and when to push their luck.
I did consider that but since Tolkien doesn't mention that as a side effect of using magic I didn't include it. But I fully see what you mean. I think to accomplish something similar it could be up to the LM to give Shadow Points depending on how any why the player is using magic.
really good stuff
Definitely prefer ToR, but there's two things I like about this game- firstly, the 'Crafts', because I do think ToR is missing magical player options for those who are not Elves. Additionally, I think 'Anguished' is a better name for the condition than 'Ill-favoured', to make it distinct from _rolls_ being Ill-favoured.
Awesome interview! You have a good channel, for sure - and I love Free League.
Please make the solo mode!
How are you able to play the campaign in Strider Mode? Presumably you would have to read the adventures first (as a loremaster), which would spoil everything, so that when you play it as a solo player, you already know all the big reveals and plot elements, which doesn't sound fun. Unless you read them as you play, paragraph by paragraph, so as not to spoil anything? The whole fun of playing a premade adventure as a player is that you don't know what will happen, it's a new experience, like reading a book for the first time with no spoilers. I don't see how it would be fun if you already know everything that will happen because you already read it in loremaster mode first, in order to run it.
I read through the entire book first before playing it. The solo experience is very different when you know all the big plot elements. When playing it I know that someone will try to ambush me here (for example) but my character doesn't. So I have to just try to imagine what my character would do with the information he has. I use the whole thing as a writing exercise to try and write the adventure like a novel. There are certainly pros and cons but I have enjoyed it a lot. I've also made a separate video on Strider Mode that I talk a bit more about this kind of thing.
@@willattheworldsend ah okay, thanks for the response! I know that some people treat solo RPGs as a journalling/writing exercise, but I have tried it and don't find it fun. I play it like a choose your own adventure, using the oracles/AI constantly so that everything ends up being a surprise for which I have no foreknowledge. Unfortunately, this style of play makes it impossible to enjoy prewritten adventures, since it's not fun (for me) when I already know all the plot twists beforehand.
The host needs a better mike. Sound is awful and it’s a shame.
Agree that the reverb is noticeable but on the positive side, the questions were prepared, useful and concise (unlike some creators’ interviews where I get as much of their opinions as Tomas).
I am about to run this in a couple of weeks with my group and was reviewing the adventure in the starter box, and thought how lackluster, no consequence it all felt. This is PERFECT!!!! Love it. I was already going to modify but your groundwork is SO GOOD I am using to springboard the remaining 4 adventures after 1 and 2. Thanks for your effort and hard work and love of the source material!
Amazing! I hope you have fun. If you read through some other comments on this video there's some good suggestions for ways to improve the adventure as well.
@@willattheworldsend One of the players turned me on to your channel I'm new to the system, So I might soak in some actual playthroughs that you have on your channel to help me compress the rules correctly a little faster than reading the book as well alone looking forward to it though
Great questions and great answers! Thoroughly enjoy your interviews, you seem to have a natural ability for them
Thank you! I am always very nervous doing the interviews but it's also one of the most fun things I get to do.
