I live in FL so I've always had slab. Now building in GA and have a choice. What worries me about the crawl space are the wooden floors. Just seems there is a potential for rotting floors.

​@the757homeguy --- Why not have piers going through the slab so you have a slab (ground level or below) and then the piers and walls above it that the house is built on to have a crawl space too for storage/utilities?

You did not tell about the flood damage and mold damages on crawl space . You never experienced the flood damage weather water disasters?

I wanted to buy a lot of land near a lake area to create a house for airbnb rentals. When I realized there was an HOA, I sought the rules and regulations. The HOA imposed a lot of rules and regulations. They charged $200 to maintain the "amenities". The parks, tennis courts, swimming pools, and so on. However, I wasn't interested in living in the area. I wanted a rental property in a nice area near a lake. If I rented a property, the HOA charged the $200, plus an additional $450. THEY had to approve the renters. and despite the $650 in fees, the renters had no access to the privileges of the HOA. Neither did I. It raises the question. Who owns the property? What gives a HOA the power to profit from your property without them having to give anything in return? And then, have the power to foreclose your home if you don't follow their rules.

to call a raised slab "the best of both worlds" seems a but off, as it also has some bad aspects. unless they fix those problems (mostly plumbing and wiring) then i would avoid any slab, raised or not. crawl-space AND a slab? hey maybe we're getting somewhere. lol

I believe that home look better on a basement or crawlspace foundation, but that is just me.

Good video, Tommy! Having designed/built around 90 homes, I prefer the raised foundation, too! The slab was once considered the "poor man's" foundation, but with recent code requirements, the engineering often involved with slabs- post mention, etc., can make the cost difference a toss- up. The raised foundation can feel "warmer" in cold climates (easily insulated), less humidity, and offer easy access to plumbing, etc.. The slab can easily accomodate radiant heat. Dave Osland

to me there is no competition. You should always build on a crawl space. too many houses suffer flood damage due to excessive rain water etc. If you have a busted pipe with a slab your house would be flooded,, with a crawl space that is flooded. Working on utilities with a crawl space is much easier than a slab.... to me anyone who lives in a flat area on a slab is a fool waiting for a flood. My father framed houses in houston for years and always said building a house on a slab is complete ignorance and this whole place is gonna flood and he was 100 percent right..... Houston was under water and all that damage could have been avoided.

I too like the accessibility of utilities in the crawl space. The thought of having to jackhammer through a slab floor to access an issue is scary to my wallet. I will say this though about crawl spaces. You WILL have to enter the crawl space from time to time. A well-constructed crawl space is worth the extra money spent to build it. Ensure it is tall enough to crawl around in. Give yourself an entry that accommodates entry without an amazing contortion act. Would you rather scoot around on a mechanic's creeper on a poured crawl space floor or crawl through the muck and grime of visquine and pea gravel? A poured floor also better accommodates a well installed sump pit that isn't going to fail from mud and gravel entering it. Also, I would use ICF to form a reinforced insulated monolithic wall for the perimeter. Every failure I have ever seen on basement or crawl wall was with CMUs. I have lived with a poorly built crawl space...NEVER again.
