Your guess is as good as mine...but actually the author (during his intro) seems to hint that Porteus survived to share his tale of near death.

During his intro the author defenitely stated that Lt.Porteus narrated a hunting incident to the author which was fresh in the lieutenant's mind . There was nothing about a near death experience . But the ending of the narrative indicates trampling by the elephant.

The author seems to have deliberately left the ending open to interpretation as a literary device, allowing listeners to decide whether Porteus truly met his fate at the hands of the rogue or survived his injuries to tell the tale. Too bad we can no longer get clarification from the author as he is long deceased...

Glad to know this rare incident happened a century ago and hasn't been a big problem since. It seems conservation efforts have made sure wolves are no longer in the endangered species in spite of continued human-wildlife conflict like in Eastern Europe.
