OK, this is really odd. My wife and I have been watching "Death and Other Details" with Mandy Patinkin and were just talking about him today. Meanwhile...I've been listening to the "Something Rotten" soundtrack, where the song "A Musical" includes a lot of brief nods to musicals over the years, and one of them was Evita ("Stand back! ...It's a musical..."). So I went looking for this commercial to hear the "Stand back, Buenos Aires" line again (as a kid growing up in the Chicago suburbs in the 70s-80s, I must have seen it a million times). And who shows up in the commercial? Mandy Patinkin. Weird.

Libretto writer James Lapine said he never even saw _Evita_ on stage, but was interested in Mandy Patinkin as Che. He thought he looked a bit like a certain pointilist painter from 19th-century France, and both he and Stephen Sondheim chose him to be a part of the OBC of _Sunday in the Park With George._

Julia Roberts is ON 🔥 here. I remember when I was Directing & playing Ned Weeks in a community theater production of The Normal Heart in Portland, Oregon back in 1996. It had been WELL over a decade since the height of the AIDS epidemic had crested, the new ARV medications were just starting to come out, and the actress whom I'd cast as Dr. Emma Brookner BURST into tears EVERY TIME she had to play this scene. Which worked for the dramatic arc because let's face it: when Dr. Linda Laubenstein (whom the character is based on) presented her evidence she was ridiculed. How would that make someone feel who's spent YEARS treating AIDS victims, collecting data and watching young gay men die and NO ONE gave a 💩? INCLUDING the NIH & the Reagan Administration! 🤬🖕 Julia Roberts work in this was PHENOMENAL! I WISH this had been made into a movie back when I was doing my production of it so that the actress could have analyzed Robert's performance. Just TOUR DE FORCE! EPIC!
