I have quite a bit to say about this. First and foremost, I’m a white guy. And as a white guy, I absolutely have a right to “speak on it.” Why? Because we all live in a broader community. I want that broader community to do better because I am either directly or indirectly affected by it - I’m a part of it. That out of the way, regardless of race, people need to take personal accountability for their actions. It’s one of the single best ways to take control over your own life. I’m speaking, in this case, specifically about sex, contraception, and pregnancy. Growing up, we experience all numbers of taboo placed on the concept of sex. And it can often times confuse things, cause angst, and certainly it can seem almost authoritarian at times. And while it would seem that no adult populace has ever mastered how they treat the topic of sexual intercourse with our youth, there is absolutely a reason behind why there are taboos. That reason is because the act of having sex can result in arguably the two most extreme consequences that there are in life: the creation of new life and the possibility of death. And to fully grasp these concepts, to fully appreciate what can result from sex - the absolute life-changing results - it takes the maturity and perspective that really can only come from being an adult. Children are all but universally unable to process this. And meanwhile, adolescents are absolutely filled to the brim with the kind of hormones that drive them to have sex more than pretty much any other age group. So yes, adults make major social norms and taboos out of this topic. The main theme being, in short, you are not ready to take on the responsibility of having sex. In our modern age, it has become commonplace and generally accepted that teens and young adults will break from these taboos. It happens. That’s the reality. But it doesn’t change the biological fact that sex inherently comes with major consequences. Through medicine and technology, we have been able to circumvent those consequences to some degree. But it would seem within the fabric of the larger general community exist cultures that do not pay heed to these consequences and the risks. I’m a child of the 80’s and much of the 90’s. I grew up a GIANT fan of hip hop. The old school stuff. Rakim, KRS-one, Big Daddy Kane, The Juice Crew, Wu Tang, Mobb Deep, and I could go on and on and on. But I digress, this music was FULL of metaphors and warnings about the dangers of having unprotected sex. FULL. And I give the music and the culture of that time a lot of credit for doing their level best to try to play a role in preventing the disasters that are so commonplace today. But looking back, I can see how it might not have been framed in the most effective possible manner. Within those lyrics and messages, were embedded the theme of getting “burned.” In other words, you were putting yourself in direct harm by flirting with HIV and other STD’s. But I do not recollect such a hard push towards a warning simply about how much one’s life could change even without the risk of STD’s. What we have seen is, by not paying heed to these warnings, not only are STD rates higher in those more specific communities they were speaking to, but so are unwanted pregnancies. In fact, they became rife with them. And I just wish that more had been said about what that does to the parents’ lives, the child’s life, their families’ lives, their specific community, and the general community at large. I’m not blaming rap. I think many tried. Hindsight is 20/20 and I’m just saying I wish some things had been framed a little differently or perhaps more accurately. It’s about personal responsibility. This is the message that needs to still be pushed. You want to take control of your life? Do you? If so, you’re already off to a great start. So take accountability. No more fast money. You want something real? You gotta work for it. You wanna be a man? You gotta earn it. Not by how much money you have. By how hard you worked. You want love? You gotta earn it. Not by how many bitches you slayed, but by a deep connection you developed with another human. You want loyalty from your fam? You gotta earn it. Not by building short term networks out of trap houses. By building a community where people can safely grow and succeed. Where investments are made in time, hard work, honesty, and in each other. Do it through steadfast expectations of morality, ethics, and integrity. You need to fight for it? Be a man about it. Do it with your mind and your work ethic. Not pulling a trigger. If worst comes to worse, knuckle up. But don’t pull a trigger. And for the women? Don’t allow yourselves to be labeled bitches and hoes. Set the bar higher than that and demand respect. And above else, treat your bodies like the temples they are. We live in a world now that is rapidly changing. It’s a global community. Everyone can become integrated. Everyone can begin work with and for each other. Those who risk being left out, both on a community and individual level, are those who fail to catch up. The way to get there is not by blaming the past on others. The way to get there is by taking personal and community accountability for what you are doing now and where you are going. And a huge part of that - one of the biggest determining factors on all of that - is the approach to sex and its consequences. It can pave the way for a future full of love and success. Or it can stop growth right in its tracks and ruin an individual, a community, and a culture. And it all comes down to personal accountability.
