This channel will be the "extra section" to our main Model Railroading Channel, The Bennett Railroad aka Stephen Bennett's channel. On this channel we will post material that doesn't exactly fit with the theme of the main channel- railfan videos, quick blog videos on various model and real railroad items, workshop tips- basically anything we feel just doesn't fit on the main channel. Please subscribe and enjoy!

New Acela Trainset- Fairview, PA on 2/17/20
A new video on the Extra Section channel! I don't do much railfanning of late due to concentrating on my HO Scale layout. But I had an opportunity today to see something a little different.
I was following the progress of the new Amtrak Acela trainset heading out west to Pueblo, CO. I ran over to Eaton Road in Fairview, PA (just to the east of CP97) on the CSX Lakeshore Subdivision to grab this short video.
Also check out our main Bennett Railroad channel, with layout updates and Product Information videos:

Heritage Units on the Blairsville Industrial Track
Просмотров 7686 лет назад
I am finally starting to catch up on some videos from my time in Blairsville, PA. This video shows the Lehigh Valley and Monongahela Heritage units working the 518/519 coal trains. The NS brings the trains to Blairsville via the Conemaugh Line. They then head up the Blairsville Industrial Track to the Rosebud coal unloader. It is a rather lengthy process, and can often take 2-3 crews to unload ...
B&P Freight at East Butler, PA 11/3/17

I was able to sneak away from the plant for a quick weekend home, and while approaching Butler, PA on Rt 422 I noticed a bit of orange off to my left. Turns out it was a southbound B&P freight heading to Butler. I raced ahead and pulled over at the Keck Road crossing and got this video- nothing fancy, just a spur of the moment lucky grab of a train! Google Maps location: 40.865278, -79.823136 P...
NS 518 in Blairsville, PA 10-22-17

On Sunday, 10/22/17 I caught the NS 518 arriving in Blairsville, PA then taking the first cut of coal to the Rosebud tipple for unloading. The train arrives on the Conemaugh Line, then works on the Blairsville Industrial Track (BIT) up to the tipple. This is one of the more obscure operations on the NS, but interesting to watch. Coal comes from the Bailey Mine into Shire Oaks, PA then is sent t...
Backwoods Railfanning: Norfolk Southern

I finally pulled together a video of NS action in some lesser traveled locations. This video shows action on the NS Conemaugh line at Avonmore, PA. We then see a 562 coal train at CP Salts, also on the Conemaugh Line, then we catch the train a little farther north on the Keystone Branch at Clarksburg, PA. Finally we see a 518 coal train in Blairsville, PA on the Blairsville Industrial Track. Al...
B&P Departs Homer City, PA

On my way into the plant on Friday, 8/4/17 I arrived JUST as the conductor was climbing back on the lead unit to depart northbound with a train of covered hoppers. I quickly jumped out of the van and shot this video. A bit shaky as it was done hand held and out the van window at a road crossing! And please excuse my breathing- results of a lung condition from my deployment to Afghanistan and a ...
B&P Train BTRI near Butler, PA 7/10/17

On the way to Homer City, PA for work I was buzzing along Rt 422 just east of Butler, PA. I noticed a B&P train stopped and the crew climbing on. I quickly stopped at Keck Rd and got the camera up just as the train was departing. I was later advised this was a BTRI train, from Butler to Riker Yard (I am assuming- I am not a B&P expert!) Ya gotta love the B&P's dogs breakfast of motive power! An...
Three NS Trains, Fairview PA on 6/11/17

Another video from my home area! On the way home from a graduation party I heard the 14M indicate he was stopped at Wallace. This could only mean a westbound was close- actually it turned out TWO were coming. First the W09 cruised by, followed quickly by the 287. After the 287 cleared, the 14M headed east. There actually was another eastbound in the siding at Swanville, but I did not hear which...
B&P in Homer City, PA: May-June 2017

Here is a collection of action caught in the small yard below the NRG Homer City Generating Station. The B&P hauls in the coal and then takes back the empties. I saw a few of these empty moves, as well as the plant switchers lugging a cut of cars up the steep branch to the plant. Late Amtrak #48 and two freights
Просмотров 2397 лет назад
I have not posted many videos from my "home turf" of Fairview, PA. I seem to do more video when I am away! But today Steve and I had to drop of his car for inspection, and heard that Amtrak #48, The Lakeshore Limited was going to run around two freights at CP 97. We decided to stop at Eaton Rd and catch the action. Nothing real exciting, just an almost 3 hour late Lakeshore Limited and then the...
NS @ CP Pack 24 & 25 May 2017

I tend to visit CP Pack when I get frustrated by not seeing anything on the NS Conemaugh Line. I know something will run on the Pittsburgh Line! This brief video highlights a few trains seen on the evenings of Wed-Thurs, 5/24 and 5/25 2017. Google Maps coordinates of this location: 40.416700, -79.225513. It is located in Torrance, PA. The Torrance Rd overpass is a nice location, but there is a ...
NS Pittsburgh Line Sampler- April 2017
Просмотров 3627 лет назад
It sure has been awhile since I uploaded a video on this channel. Most of the videos I do are for the main Bennett RR channel and are model railroading related. Well, I have been away from the layout for a bit and was able to get some trains on the NS Pittsburgh Line. Here is a short sampler of some PITL trains from April, 2017. Nothing real fancy, but I was able to catch the NYC heritage unit ...
NS911 on 287 plus a few other trains

I actually do shoot video at home...I have briefly escaped from the on site job in Homer City and took a break from working on the layout to catch the NS911 "Honoring First Responders" unit leading the 287. A few other trains were about so I made a short video of all the action. I am still learning the Sony RX10 Mark II, especially for video. I need to figure out how to keep the focus better an...
B&P Coal Empties at Homer City, PA [4K]
Просмотров 7567 лет назад
On a VERY frigid 12/15/16 late afternoon I happened to see the B&P collecting empty coal cars in the small yard below the Homer City power plant. I stopped to video the action, but could only stand it for a couple of moves as it was just too darn cold! This is the first upload in 4K from my new Sony RX10 Mark II. Excuse the shakiness- I was using a monopod and was actually shivering so much it ...
NS 38Q at Blairsville on 12/4/16

On a dreary Sunday after work I heard a 38Q was on the way towards Blairsville, PA. Not having a lot of time I tried this location as it was close and with the overcast skies I could shoot from this side of the tracks. A very long 38Q is seen at MP12 on the NS Conemaugh Line. Always that Expression, I believe a famous Modeler, whose name escapes me has said: “Good Enough”! I like the looks of the bridge! Perfection doesn’t last a long time in the “Real World”. Right?
Any word if this tipple in Blairsville will be reopening?
Love the old PRR signals! Do you ever get out to Ohio to railfan at the major hotspots?
Nice catch!
I noticed how old all these comments are but let me assure you the pain and suffering of building a CVM bridge is still just as real. I'm almost done with mine but just wanted to comment on how nice the paint and weathering is. Also the satisfaction of tackling a CVM bridge immeasurable. Now, no comment on the instructions.
Nice video. It's a shame that this is all gone now!
With the announcement of the closing of HCGS last month, I'm guessing this train is already done. I'm guessing the plant is working through its stock pile until it closes, likely in July.
WOW- I did not even know the plant was scheduled to close! Thanks for the info, I'll have to check it out. There were rumors of it closing- back in 2015-2017 when I was there.
You did an absolutely fantastic job on this bridge. It looks amazing. The best I have seen yet. I’m not sure if you have ever built any Micro Engineering Steel Viaduct bridges, but if you have, I was wondering what your opinion of the difficulty level is between ME and Central Valley bridges? I have just completed a ME 150’ Steel Viaduct and while not extremely difficult, it is the preparation of all of the parts just to assemble it that is the real pain. I would say it takes about 40 - 50 hours to assemble it. I’m now weathering it which is not easy either. I have heard that Central Valley Pratt Truss bridges are on another level of difficulty. They are a lot of money wasted if one were to mess it up. This rail work alone is almost enough to scare me off. Thank you for posting all of this assembly and painting of the bridge. It’s a museum piece!
I've got a question i saw theese online and thought about buying them 1 can you put ho scale track already assembled and 2 do the pieces come underneath to hold the trestle up because I can't tell by the picture online
Good video. Lots of information I didn't know. Thanks
The tallest of the four smokestacks in the background is actually the tallest smokestack in the United States as well as the third tallest in the world. 🙂
Excellent tutorial. I’ve ordered the same bridge and I have one question. My existing rails approaching the bridge are 2 1/4 “ apart center to center not 2”. Would it be a big deal to accommodate the extra 1/4 “ ? Thanks in advance. T. Tucker
Nice Subscrito
Where did you get the yellow fixture that holding the bridge at an angle for painting?
Just watched this series Rob, took me a while.😁 The bridge looked great five years ago and still looks as good today. You had some trouble with it but isn't that half the fun? I don't think I've ever seen you build anything that went perfectly from start to finish. The end result was well worth all your effort though. One thing I've noticed with your projects over the years: even when you're struggling with bits of kits that aren't fitting, you're still adding extra bits/tweaking things. Great attitude.👍 I was interested to hear you say that the safety rails were 39' in length. Did that apply to running lines too? Here in Scotland, our rail sections were, and some still are, sixty feet in length.
Back in the days before welded rail the rail pieces were 39ft in length- from what I've heard this is so they would fit on a 40ft flat/gondola.
@@robbennett1965 Interesting stuff Rob. Like I said, ours were 60' so, presumably, our flats were longer. There's still some 60' sections in use on minor routes but more and more are being replaced by long welded sections. The old "clicketty-clack" sound of rail travel is disappearing.😒
Amazing catch I catch these trains as well as the B&P trains in butler Pennsylvania
Nice video like and subscribed from Czech Republic 🙂👍👍👍
Great catch I catch these B&P trains in Butler Pennsylvania
Sure glad to see this. I'm building a new layout and incorporating this bridge into my layout.
Just got this kit from Walthers for my husband and it came with a full diagram of the bridge.
Great job. NS 1067 was also in Freeport on this line as well
5/64 is common size American
I just caught a BLE train
Always a great day to see the B&P at HCGS. I remember walking across the bridge just below the yard in this video - twice - while it was partially washed out. A foolish thrill of my youth :). About 5 years ago I saw at least a dozen hopper cars - the tall white kind that might hold plastics - at the yard in the video. Would anyone know what might have been in these?
I have watched this series like 5 times, awesome work, beautiful outcome. Want to build one myself but need it like 32 to 36" long. Need to figure out how to expand it. with out buying two bridges. Anyway, awesome job.
contact CVMW. they sell the expansion hits you can buy seperatley to make it longer.
Why four rails instead of two? -Sean
Those are the guardrails. Most bridges have them.
I wanted to take a few moments out of my day, and thank you; thank you! I found this video to be very helpful. Nice work too...
Man, that is one badass bridge. I only hope my bridge comes out half as good...
Fantastic video series I am building mine at the moment and your videos are a very big help and I will keep rewatching them till its complete, 😊
Your doing a good job in correcting and learning from your mistakes. Besides we all will have a learning curve when it comes to building a model kit.
Just started on the CVMW #1901 bridge kit, basically the single track version of this bridge. This series will come in very handy!
Based on Alstom Italys Avelia / Pendolino Design, makes me wonder if their trains are as reliable as their cars/motorcycles/helicopters or anything else very technical made in Italy.....?
Nice that they’re finally making their way but I’m not a fan of the colors. Makes it look like a model and to me, makes it look like Amtrak went back in time with the color.
Nice rob thanks
You are welcome!
Awesome shot! Such an opportunity to see! I'm waiting West of Cleveland as we speak!
Rob thanks for doing this build series. I have been looking for something to span a table gap as a duck under and i now know this aint it. As a matter of fact i recently bought this kit and have not opened and i think im going to return it. Too detailed for me. Im not that patient.
Outstanding action
Rob, that is one good looking bridge! I have decided to use Central Valley's single track truss bridge on my layout, won't have two tracks where the bridge is. This series will be really helpful when it comes time to build it! Very well done, indeed!
Super job Bob, after watching you build this Bridge I have purchased one & will be watching your you tube pics again & again next to my modeling table just to keep checking the build up, thank you for sharing., Cheers U.K. modeller Bri
Brian- very glad the videos helped! The bridge was fun to build, just take your time and it will turn out fine. Show us some pictures when done!
@@robbennett1965 Will send pic when the bridge is built , it may take a while Im coming up to 80......
You will never use all that paint 🎨 unless you make and sell models or crafts . Nice though 👍🏻
Not with that attitude!
What are they hauling? That definately wasn't a coal train.
Stunning mate, stunning!
If you know nitnoy you must have been in Thailand.
Nice video! How was your camera positioned on the route 20 bridge? I’ve never gotten a good shot up there due to the setup of the structure.
Thanks- and I don't recall how I shot this, been so long. I likely just had a monopod and was standing on the sidewalk.
+Rob Bennett Ok thanks! I had to shoot through the slits in the rails because they were so high for my tripod. The shot came out fine but it isn’t as good as this.
Rob that was a nice catch on the Erie Heritage unit. and the 309 with 14 cars and 3 engines. When I worked for NS back in the mid 90s, we would of called this engine overkill.
Nice work. The many tabs that hold are not there to hold the parts.. they are the channels neded to cst the parts with no missing plastic. it is incredible the way they have them down to such tiny sprues in today's pressure injection molding processes. Better to trim a few extra nubs than to have a bad casting.
I didn’t realize that you had this channel. I liked and subbed to ya. Now I need to go make sure I’m still subbed to your home layout channel. Which I am unfortunately way behind on watching. 😜😃
I know this was years ago but what a great build. Don’t put yourself down still did one hell of a job! Bobby
Okay I know where that is,thanks
It looks like a 100 yr. old rusty bridge, great job
