Making of a Silver Filigree Crown
Просмотров 14 тыс.5 лет назад
Overview of how I made a full size silver filigree crown utilizing traditional filigree techniques. Crown is made entirely of fine and sterling silver and features a traditional Middle Eastern flower motif.
Beautiful ❤️, Cost?
Depends on the design and whether it is a crown or a tiara. Filigree Tiaras start at $1,000 USA
We need an updated tutorial
China would probably make a Bactrian camel , I think Italy !
Thanks for the feedback!
Every step of the process is very careful. It's a wonderful technique. I am very impressed✨✨✨
Thank you, I appreciate you taking the time to watch.
Good for you! Keep up the hard work.
I would have loved this for checking trichomes in my growing days
bravo
Superb 👏👏👍😎🐈⬛🇦🇺
Great experiment, thank you .
Thank you!
🎉 perfect 🎉
Thank you
Great video, Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
What brand torch do you use
For filigree I use the EZ Torch, also known as the Orca Torch. Otto Frei sells them under EZ torch. It is a propane air torch
By chance do you know where can i get torches with larger nozzles “large soft flame torches”
Its for large peices
Happy to help. How large are the pieces and what are you soldering? ie are you using high temperature solders like the ones we use to solder silver
We do filagree plates and vases
We need to see MORE from you!! Maybe show us how to make powdered solder....?
Thanks for your feedback. I do have a video on how to make powdered solder. It is on the Ganoksin website. Gold level members can view the video for free. @ganoksin
Thanks Milt, nicely done!
Very good video. Thanks for sharing. One question; where did you get your powdered solder and what grade is it, easy, med, or hard. Thank you
I make my own powder solder. I create the ingot, file it down and then use it as you saw in this video. I use easy solder for my filigree
Thank you@@mfmetalarts5782
well done SIR Thank you I hung on too EVERY word wrote it all down thank you
Glad it helped
Did he say 30 minutes and then 13 as i recall useing them 13 minutes sounds more like it 30 minutes seems less bad but years ago when i tried it the propane was like $2.50 but like $10 or so and it takes so many to empty the $2.50 of propane
Ya thos oxygen bottles should be criminal to sell they dont have much in them
You sir are a true artist, I have been watching RUclips for years and making jewelry for years also but you are my favorite. This is only my second of your video's that I have seen but I am hooked.
Thanks for your very kind comment. Very much appreciated!
How did you use that much ox I never used anywhere near that . Even using it for years as a professional jeweler
Hi Warren. The video clearly shows how I did the tests. How I set up the torch etc. The results are consistent and accurate. Is there something you feel that I did incorrectly in the design of the experiment? Do you have any specific data on the number of disposable oxygen bottles you used per disposable propane bottle ? I would be very interested in understanding your experience with disposable oxygen bottles
Disposable oxygen cylinders are a heinous wasteful ripoff of a hobbyist population who don't know their options but they'll get ya started. I was browsing small torch videos and noticed this one so here's my highly experienced two cents. I just saw Zoro tools advertising a disposable oxygen cylinder for $31.16 before shipping. That's a lot for a hunk of tubing and so little oxygen the cost per ounce may be a penny or so. Vastly superior are small (or any size you have space for and don't mind handling) industrial oxygen cylinders as used on "HVAC" torch kits. Cylinders are filled by exchange at your local welding supply so I buy used cylinders cheap via Craigslist etc. Oxygen regulators are quite reasonably priced in the smaller sizes. Industrial cylinder valves are CGA-540 thread. Pic shows a standard CGA 540 oxygen regulator for non-throwaway cylinders for Little Torch use. These easily last many decades and if you somehow managed to wear out a seat etc are rebuildable via your local welding supply or online. Miller bought Smith so you may see both names in adverts: www.crhill.com/smithlittletorchoxygenregulator-2.aspx Compare disposables to 20 or 40 cubic foot industrial oxygen cylinders (never lease gas cylinders BTW, just buy as cheap as ya can since they're refilled by exchange which is fine but you don't get a pretty new one back not that it matters) for which you pay once and cry once. A little 20cf cylinder is about 120 via Amazon and a 40 about 155. You do not need a Smith brand oxygen regulator but they're well made. ESAB, Victor etc are fine too. The Weldingweb forums are very noob-friendly and can give you PROFESSIONAL detailed explanations of what to buy to suit any purpose. I'm not affiliated but have over 4000 posts there because I like the place and learnt a lot from them when I ran a welding school toolroom.
qual tocha voce usa hoje boa e economica . Obrigado
I use the EZ torch, also called Orca Torch for all of my filigree work
@@mfmetalarts5782 Obrigado. E valeu pelo vídeo
After watching this video, I would like to say much appreciated! Thanks for the detail. Question: What type of setup do you suggest for a jewelers torch and tanks. Thank you kindly!
Hi Steve. My preferred torch is a simple EZ Torch which is propane /air. This is not a precision torch but is perfect for the filigree work I do. If you are looking to set up a fuel/oxy torch, I would suggest something like a Little torch, with 1 pound disposable propane bottles and an oxygen concentrator.
Hi. Thanks for posting this video. Would it make sense to use the Smith Little Torch with those small disposable propane tanks with an oxygen concentrator?
Yes, you can use an oxygen concentrator, that is a very common setup
This is some seriously amazing talent and craftsmanship! wow!
Thanks for the compliment!
Phenomenal filigree work! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Wow. So it’s just best to bite the bullet and buy an oxygen tank. Thank you very much!
Some welding shops will rent you the oxygen tank and just charge you for the oxygen. Note that if your studio is in your home you should consider whether you insurance company is OK with you having an oxygen tank in the house. I personally would go with an oxygen concentrator.
Can you use worthington oxygen and propane disposable tanks with the smith little torch
To the best of my knowledge, yes, all of the disposable tanks have threading systems that will work with their respective regulators ie propane needs a propane regulator made for disposable tanks and same goes for oxygen (different regulator).
You're vastly better off buying small industrial oxygen cylinders than spending far more per tiny low-pressure fill for disposables. Worthington and other standard disposable LP cylinders fit because the LP thread is a Compressed Gas Association standard.
I recently bought the same torch I just need to find the right regulators before I can use it. What brand regulators do you use?
I use Smith regulators
Compellingly shows to go one that a M or R tank will probably save mucho dinero comipared to the 1lb’ers. Though I am guessing, having done no comparative calculations.
Yes, you are correct. The other option would be to go with an oxygen concentrator
It's no contest re:oxygen. A Homefill concentrator can also refill small industrial cylinders if you assemble an adapter using high pressure fittings (Western dominate that market) and the Homefill male QD, or you can and I do use an adapter with medical cylinders (in my case for running a cutting torch in the field for very short tasks) and run a standard oxygen regulator. Some time spend reading about CGA fittings and welding oxygen in general is well spent.
this was a very helpful video. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
How come on test 1 you used a #7 tip but test 2 & 3 it looks like you're using a Rosebud tip. Definitely not the same tip being used. Just curious.
Hi Stacy, Thanks for your interest. The reason I switched to the rosebud tip was to make the testing go a bit quicker as the rosebud tip uses a lot more fuel than the #7.
Are you related to Kenneth Fishbein who works as a researcher?
Not that I know of. He also spells his name differently as I have a c in my lst name Fischbein....
Странно а что фон такой страшный. Цветки красота а фон!
Hello, do we know the composition of filigree solder? Thank you in advance.
I use paste solder which I purchase from RIo Grande. I think it is about 65% silver
Just came across your channel last night and love it! May I ask what are the large blocks on the bottom of where you do your heating of the metal? I need to set up an area for my torch and really like your setup. Thank you for sharing your talent and helping new jewelry makers like me. have a wonderful week.
Hi Paul, Glad you like my RUclips Channel. The large blocks are called soldering blocks. They are heat and fire resistant and are readily available from all jewelers supply companies
@@mfmetalarts5782 Thank you very much for your help! Have a wonderful day.
@@mfmetalarts5782 By the way I see you use Pepetools have you used thier ring stretcher? I am in the market for one so thought I would get your advise I dont have much experience with Pepetools. Thanks again.
Hi Paul, I have never used the Pepe tools ring stretcher, so I can not give you an opinion on it.
👍
It would be great if you could elaborate more on the tools used in filigree and all the various filigree designs/patterns are created. I have been studying it on my own, but a more detailed approach on the wires and processes used would be greatly insightful. Thank you!
Hi Krystyna, thanks for your thoughtful comments. I am considering developing some Zoom based classes on Filigree. Those classes would cover some of the topics that you are interested in. Stay tuned......
Excellent video! Thank you for showing the process on filigree. I wanted to know if the 0.4mm each twisted wires is the standard size in filigree making? Thanks
Hi Krystyna, Thanks for your question. 26 Ga (about 0.4 mm) fine silver wire is very commonly used for filigree. 95% of my filigree work is based on that size of wire. Many other sizes are also used. I have used wire as low as 38 Ga or about 0.1 mm. This takes a lot of practice to use. If you are just beginning, I suggest you start with 26 Ga fine silver wire. You can see more of my work and can contact me through my website at www.mfmetalarts.com
@@mfmetalarts5782 Ah, Thanks. I was also wondering if it is fine to use sterling silver for the filigree patterns?
Most filigree artists use fine silver for their filigree wire because it is less springy ie has less memory. Sterling can be used and in some cases is preferred, but it is very difficult to make tight coils with sterling silver as it is very "springy" and the coils tend to spring open and not maintain their shape
@@mfmetalarts5782 Ahh, Okay I understand now. Thanks again
Wow, I had no idea the number of steps & the amount of skill involved. And the resulting crown is absolutely beautiful!
Thanks for your feedback.
