The dog.

I rescued a Dogo from the pound who was formally trained. He would not only obey off leash commands. He also understood hand signals and would go into guard mode if I encouraged it. I did not know enough about either topic so I never gave or implied those commands. The dog has been gone for 10 years now.

I was lucky enough to have a dogo. Best dog I ever had.

The key to this behavior is constant maintenance. Walks are a daily routine not "when you have time". This includes in the rain and snow. As the dog gets older the routine becomes cemented in. Great to see other people doing it. Having a dog is a way of life to get these results.

I can do this with my akita but if there's any male dogs around or rabbits or squirrels then it's out of the question

My dog has instinctually walked like this beside me to the point he almost trips me. While trying to teach heel, I accidentally just taught him to stop and sit when I stop while I’m walking. I don’t think he even responds to the word “heel”. 🤦‍♀️ He’s so smart and picks up so quickly. I just think I’m confusing him and ruining a potentially very easily trained dog. We are great off leash until he hears our goat cry....he sees another dog or gets tired of the treats I’m feeding. I need a class like this....not just for me but for him. I literally feel that if I don’t get him proper training that I’m wasting his potential. Sounds crazy but he’s just that bright. I’ve never had a dog this smart. He picks up what I’m laying down within minutes. I then work daily on reinforcing. I’m at a point where I don’t know what to do next or how to proceed with it. Sigh. I’m in Anniston Alabama. Do u know any trainers down south?
