Here is a perfect example of the rationalist bent of the Calvinist. Notice how incessantly the word "objective" is employed. The assumption is that each of us can "rationally" divide the objective and the subjective with utter ease. Alas, this is not so. Rest assured, this caller did not go forward from this lecture with his problem solved, or even improved upon. Instead, there is a good chance he went forth with his feelings telling him that, perhaps the promises of the Bible are not as ironclad as they would suggest in their verbal form. I am reminded of those Jewish religious leaders who had "assurance of salvation" based on the fact that they were sons of Abraham. Jesus disabused them of their confidence in the objective fact of their Abrahamic lineage by telling them that God could raise up sons of Abraham from the very stones. Reformed Calvinists are rationalists. The trust in their RATIONAL understanding of Bible's words. But, wait ... isn't it God himself who has created us as emotional beings as well as rational ones? Why then are we instructed by Reformed Calvinists to blockade this God-given part of our humanity? What if God were to communicate to us through our entire being, not just the rational? What then should have been the counsel this young man received, rather than chopping off his emotional nature? Perhaps what would have helped him is the knowledge that doubts about salvation, doubts about even God's existence, are a normal part of the Christian walk. If it is true--and it is--as Paul says that for "Now we see as in a mirror dimly..." we should expect that the partial knowledge of God would mean also an imperfect confidence in our salvation. Luther, himself, was assailed by doubts. And, when he was, he would lay hold of his baptismal certificate and tell himself loudly, "Yes, but I have been baptized!" Yes, you Calvinists are right ... that is a rational maneuver on Luther's part. My point is that he had to do it ... because his feelings of doubt about his salvation were present on occasion. Tell the poor guy that his feeling of doubt are normal, and that when he experiences them to consciously, prayerfully turn those feeling over to God ... and to develop a habit of doing so every time. I am an old retired pastor. I have an MDiv and a DMin (big deal). I still have doubt from time to time that any of it (Christianity, along with God himself) are true. You could read me all the promises of the Bible, but they still would not disappear. Why? Because the Bible itself is part of that package that the doubts are about! I am content, therefore, to live by faith--simple faith--knowing that from time to time doubt will creep in for a spell. So be it. Please stop telling people you have the panacea for it.

Whilst this is true, it is essential that there are some feelings and some times in the Christian life. There should be some level of a sense of peace and spiritual joy. This will go up and down much more if you struggle with assurance but there should be something, sometimes. The love of God which is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. For many people this happens at conversion, but for others that may not be the case. Either way, trust in God in the Lord Jesus Christ by His word. If you take God humbly at every part of His word you're in a good placs. The more you let go of self and believe with dependent trust the more you will come into assurance of salvation.

If you do Not read the Word of God and believe it's Truths you can Not be saved by the Faith that comes with Salvation. Believe in your Heart and confess with your mouth/actions and you have the Gift of Eternal Life as God has promised to those that Love Him. AMEN.

Define trusting in what you read, this could go really deep, what ifnyou struggle to grasp what you're reading as reality becuz you need a feeling or expect one, really struggling, in crisis and very ill mentally physically and spiritually, i just want to read and not question or analyze, idk if this is spiritual attack, yrs of suffering, years of lies

I have the exact same one, same color, I think it's a synthetic leather. though the design on the cover is a little different I think. The print is a little small but this is the personal size, it's a little thick but the again it is a study bible that tries to be a handy size for carrying around in Church that compromises a little in ease of reading vs being compact.

This happened to me. I started reading, watching lectures, listening to podcasts... from all sources and with al kind of arguments. In the end. The evidence just destroyed my doubt. All glory to OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST.

Perhaps people don't have any feelings because they are not saved. An absence of feelings is a clear sign of lukewarmness. Scripture tells us that lukewarm Christians are not saved, but they are going to be spit out.

I disagree with the idea of dr lawson. If a professing christian commit suicide then he is not a true believer. He is not part of Gods elect in the first place because taking ones life is forbidden. Hope he will not teach homosexual will go to heaven.

Interesting to me that he points out the idol of trusting in a prayer prayed for salvation, rather than trusting in the promise of God to save through the death of Christ - which he is correct, then however he turns and wants people to find assurance in their fruit! This is also different than trusting God's promise in Christ, and also another idol. He is almost just trading one for another. Don't trust your fruit for salvation, trust Christ - then the fruit will come naturally

My question is this. I feel joy and peace, because I rely the truth of the Scripture. is this wrong because I feel joy and peace? Everytime I know that the promise of God is sure? I know that the promise of God is sure, that's why I feel joy and peace? is this Okey?
