D20 Stained Glass Soldering Tutorial Using Jig/ Mold from bluehillglass.com

Make a D20 with me. You can make an enclosed shape like I have, or create your own unique design. From jewelry boxes, to hanging plant holders, this mold helps you make icosahedrons in a breeze. Remember, temperatures of irons vary greatly from models, so always start with your lowest temperature that will allow you to grab the solder with the iron (for me this is 360C). If your solder doesn't ...

Where can this mold be purchased and what is the price?

Excellent soldering!
Great products but, being a pensioner and living in Canada, shipping, and USD makes them all unaffordable. However, thank you for your instructions.
awesome video, I've made 3 now
@@Elyon113 so glad it helped you!! Thanks for watching
If you put a plant in it, there are no holes for water drainage It just won't work
I added stones, soil and moss and it’s still surviving a year later, growing too big for this terrarium.
Did you just tack the inside or did you solder all the lines?
can you ship to south africa
We ship worldwide!
Do you do repairs??
Wow! I think you have the best soldering I've ever seen! Brilliant!
Thank you so much for the compliment 😊
What black patina do you use for lead-free solder?
I use novacan patina
I want purshase the mold and the pentagon templetes.
Great work of art. I am truly inspired. Thank you very much.
Ty! That’s great to hear hope you have fun creating
I love it
Thanks so much!
Both looks great! would love to try the teardrop one.. do you have a pattern for that?
Thank you! Both patterns come with the jig 😀
A bowl of dry rice should hold it level
Great idea thanks so much 😊
Do you put a raised bead on your solder on the inside and out?
Yes I do. It’s good practice but not completely necessary for insides you won’t see. It does provide more strength overall.
did you ever figure out a way to hold it?
Can you be more specific? It’s been a minute since I made this video 😂❤
At roughly 15min mark you said it can be hard to hold it for a while and asked for ideas.
@@BenHarper1984 no let me know your ideas! I just got used to holding it but it’s tiring 😊
😊😊❤
Where can I get the night light you used in the video?
I have them on my website under stained glass tools 😀
❤❤❤❤
What is the green scrubby sponge looking thing you clean the glass with?
Hi! It’s those scratch free scrub pads. I use the dollar store ones cut up because they are cheaper than the name brand and they are a little less abrasive. They work really well with less mess than steel wool. Just be gentle on iridescent or super slick(Oceanside) glass because they can cause a scratch if you push too hard. Hope this helps 😊
@@bluehillglassstudio tyvm! All the info I needed ❤️
So excited to get started with my new mold! It arrived yesterday, so look out on my first day off! Thank you for this great instructional video 😊
🎉 have fun!! 😊 you’re welcome glad you enjoyed it
Beautyfull work ❤ can i buy it send to Holland???
Thank you! Yes we ship internationally. 😊
Loved it! <3 Thanks for the video!
Thanks so much!
Hi Bluegrass! I am in Canada! Do you ship to B.C., Canada?
Hi! Yes we ship internationally. Shipping is calculated automatically at checkout and it’s usually pretty accurate unless you buy multiple items. I always refund shipping overages if they occur tho. Please be aware you will have to pay vat fees upon delivery 😊
Hello! Just received my kit in the mail and am looking forward to making these. Could you please tell me what size the dichroic glass blobs are? Thanks for the tutorial!
Hi 👋 I used 10mm dichroic gems I fused in my kiln. I actually just added them to my shop 😊 Happy crafting
@@bluehillglassstudio Thank you!!
How do I access your shop? I’m in NC too. What town/city are you in?
I may have missed it- did you use 60/40 solder or lead-free? And does it matter with plants or votives?
You can use either depending on what purpose it’s for. I used 60/40 for these two and the succulents I have in them are thriving so I don’t think the lead effects the plants too much with the rock/soil/moss layers I did in mine. If you’re making something that’s touched daily I would do lead free. For lead free you may need to solder at a higher temp.
@@bluehillglassstudio Thank you!!
I will literally share ur account with whoever I can because you are insane and deserve the whole world to see
Thank you so much! Word of mouth really helps small creators and small business owners like us!
Thank you for being one of the only creators I can find that actually explains the process and what all the materials are for. I feel so much more confident trying this new hobby because I actually understand why I’m using/doing the things
Hey! I really appreciate that. You’re going to love it. Be patient with yourself and really work on perfecting one step at a time❤️
Do you need to apply any kind of water proofing to avoid rust? Absolute newbie here :)
I prefer to put my stained glass pieces inside because of oxidation that occurs in weather. Stained glass rubbing compound or car wax is what I use to prevent that but it’s no match for rain.
Classic, elegant, modern. I love it! Any reason you are not using the mold instead of wedges to hold it in place when you solder the outside?
Thank you! The mold is made of plastic so to make it last longer I just use the mold to tack and solder off it. In the beginning of making these I was soldering the outside in the mold. When turning it the outside seams are still really hot and they would damage my mold and it will also stick in the mold if solder bleeds through. By soldering off the mold you’re going to get years out of it.
Hi, I have cut all the pieces for a "soccer ball." How do I solder the last few pieces on the inside? How do I clean the flux out? Thanks!
You can make two bowls and then solder them together. Or you can leave 3 pieces off. Solder those 3 then attach. I clean the flux off the inside before closing the shape.
@@bluehillglassstudio Thanks!
Hi, What size foil did you use? Thanks
I used 7/32”. I use this size mostly unless a piece is really curvy. Then I use 3/16” I find it bends easier without ripping. If you have thick glass use 1/4”
What is that liquid you using? What is the name of that
It’s stained glass flux. I use Novacan brand. A little goes a long way so don’t use too much or it will spit and pop at you.
Can't wait to see more from you. I've always wanted to learn how to do this type of art projects.
Why do you not tin all the petal edges before assembling?
Because it would prevent a tight fit. By assembling first, then beading the edge, I make sure there’s no solder obstructing the connecting seams and also bind them together on the edges
I wish I had seen your video before I purchased another person’s single mold. Your tutorial was great!
@@MThom-ck9ld glad you enjoyed the tutorial! We like the three levels and petals sized to fit perfectly for a consistent polished look every time. We also offer other jigs for d20,d12 and truncated icosahedrons in our shop. Be sure to check out our other tutorials for those 😊
Awesome tutorial! That mold is genius
Thank you!❤
Great demonstration. Thanks!
Glad it helped! 🎉
Wow! A very nice tutorial! Just went to your website. Didn't know y'all were originally from NC. I do stained glass and live in Fayetteville, NC! Sending good vibes your way from your "Southern Home!" 😀
Hey neighbor. Glad you enjoyed the tutorial :)
Just received my order of molds … thank you for creating them and offering them to your customers… these creations are so much easier now … well worth the money !
Glad to hear it Patty! Hope you make tons of lovely flowers with them
Another way to assemble is to make the top half, then the bottom half, and then solder together. You won’t have the strength the method above has but still will give a good hold
Sell the petals with the kit! A complete DIY kit!
You got it!
That’s lovely
Thank you
@1:47 should have said keep the FOIL from ripping. 😂
