Ah yes the yellow emporer, i once made a video about him for uni
Are there any books (and/ or translations) you would recommend for a person who wants to dig deeper into daoism? :) Im new to this way of being in the world but i would not mind literature that is a bit more complex but also gives good introductions into this philosophy
Really nice. Helpful. Serious. Thoughtful. Useful. Should be part of Western education. There seems no reason why Christians, Moslems, Buddhists, and everyone else shouldn't include this is in their studies. Where religions are aligned against the Tao, this of course is dangerous. Even if Taoism is in any way against the Tao, the same is true. We all have much to learn.

Funny that this should pop up in my feed. Two days ago, I received a book in the mail, 'When The Shoe Fits", Talks on the stories of Chuang Tzu, by Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh.
have attempted many times to know Zhuangzi yet not much of a progress to date. simply an out of the world teachings with fairyland tales. Thank you for making this as a good guide into his world of thinking, motivates me to go for it again
❤
I am fascinated by Zhunagzi books and its seem more practical for society rather than other more enlightenment-oriented as a goal schools. I would like know more about how this teaching can apply in our daily life of work, society duties and thriving existence full of ebrace and aliveness. How can society exist with leaders who are like them and not fade from a lack of structure? How can modern leaders lead this world into that pursuit, as humanity we all want that, the continuing of structure that serves humans in the best way? rising above scientific advancement that is not making people's lives full of vibrance and freedom, its the opposite humans are not fullfilled in our days mostly and its based on pursuit of material stability that neglects anything like true self. Tank you for shedding light on this teaching!
Zhuangzi's work, along with other Taoist classics, is rich in wisdom and hence can be interpreted on many level in meaningful and inspiring ways. But it's important to also study it as based on its own spacial-temporal context. Taoist solutions to society are not as they literally appear, but are words from a different framework, which views the cosmos, society and individual distinctively from the paradigm that we the modern people are taking as default. We think it will be helpful to learn about Taoism systematically, and you will find your own answers to those questions through the journey.

Stunning, brilliant ! The best presentation of Zhuangzi on youtube to date. Congratulations for the wonderful work. Zhaungzi has been my favourite book for the last 44 years when I discovered it by chance. I have bought all the editions in English ever since and those translations made before, all of those in Spanish, French and Portuguese. I could without falling into tacky emotionalism say that I fell in love with his writings that have inspired me in so many ways. One section of a chapter would be so rich that I could find maybe several possible deep and mystical interpretations for it. In the last 10 or so years I have benefited from buying some of the few traditional commentaries of obscure passages available today in the West. Only a couple of years ago the famous complete commentary by Guo Xiang was made available in English for the first time ever, adding some important ideas to what we had until then for those of us who don't read Chinese. Overall, he was a mystical genius, and the ideal to be looked up to. This book offers the most perfect set of ideas, vision, literary achievement, poetic enchantment. It is the best wisdom of all ages, ever.
Is there one book or many? Could you make a guide through that priceless knowledge, where one should start and what not to miss? If that's possible, i haven't heard someone into it that much. I am listening to audiobooks and knowledge feels difficult to grasp while my soul calls to it over and over again, the implementation is something that feels complex for the mind. When I have listened the book my biggest question was, is it possible society would be structured that way, can we use it and have enough structure to replace today's profit driven life order, or should we seek more implementations from Confucianism something closer to shed light on political aspect as it is still quite important.
While attracted to this knowledge from my essence i am still can be often caught in the fight for my existence and money, what could be the first step walking towards it while not getting too hight on the idea of carefreeness is it even possible to learn this in the early stages of life.
I think many would benefit and be glad if you would create videos that would teach your viewers, particulary those who live outside of East Asia, specific Taoist practices or exercises that anyone could do. Thank you for another educational video. More power to you and your channel.
Great suggestion! We'll teach practices in the online course currently being developed. Thank you for the support.
Thank for the video, I prefer him over Kung Tse and all his theory of relation!!!!

Thank you for sharing this wonderful knowledge, can you make a video about Liezi specifically?
Thanks for letting us know that you're interested in Liezi. We'll try to cover him, if not in the video, then probably in course content.
I highly respect you for your work. Thank you very much, I greatly look forward to more. As someone who is just starting learning about Chinese culture and language, I would greatly appreciate more context around the Chinese words used and especially the stories that capture the essence of these concepts and masters.
Great video, but what is The Dao?
I am so happy I found these videos.
I feel like some of the passages you mentioned within the Tao te Ching are a bit of a stretch, but there are plenty of more mystical daoist works from that early period even if they are less famous. And many of the famous mystical works predate Daoism. It could be what they mean. But it seems like reading into the text. My personal theory is that the early daoists were religious, but were more focused on the persuit of the truth and moral cultivation in a practical way, but that by the time the Han Dynasty started, that the folk tradition of Wizards, geomancers, and medical practitioners discovered and adopted the broader works. But, I don't know enough to verify it. If we look at the story of Laozi, he didn't set out to create a philosophy, but rather someone happened to ask him to write down his Thoughts. Zhuangzi was more intentional, but was more focused on specifically refuting the Confucians and Mohists, within the context of the School of names. Regardless, Zhuangzi in particularly advocates fairly strongly for a moral form of cultivation, and his Talk of immortals and such clearly refute the more biased view that it is incompatible with a pursuit of immortality, because he expresses death as something to be accepted. Regardless, even before religious daoism was instiutionalized. It was still closely tied with traditional medicine and folk classics. And pretty much all philosophies of the time were also heavily influenced by religious and folk aspects. The original 5 classics of Confucianism included the Yi Jing. And to a broader extent, many early Philosophies before the Han Dynasty could be viewed as alternative methods and theories about what nature is like both outside and inside of people. And there is general agreement for the most part that trying to get to the core nature is good. And there was also a notable period before Daoism was institutionalized where it was commonly syncretized as a more personal or metaphysical element underpinning Confucianism. Where Confucianism is like the branches of a tree and Daoism was the trunk or roots. And that is was the growing influence and contact with Buddhism which actually spurred Daoism to become organized, it was still to an extent religious, and involved meditation and magical practices before that point. (Part of the issue is what practices.) From what I can tell chanting, talismans, and a greater focus on internal vs. external alchemy in comparison to geomancy and divination is part of the Daoist Response to Buddhism. If there was a distinct "philosophical Daoism" historically, it clearly merged with and joined up with Zen Buddhism. And wouldn't have been a pure version of the classics, but rather an retroactive reflection during the Han Dynasty.
The term cultivation, seems to be an interesting metaphor. To an extent it also seems to mirror some confucian ideas. I am curious if the term you are translating as that in the Zhuangzhi, is literally cultivation as in growing a plant. A word that shares a similar root to that, or a unique word that only refers to (presumably internal) spiritual/moral development or as a synonym to internal alchemy. I like the metaphor. But Zunagzhi to an extent speaks against the idea of Menzi, that you can create virtue by cultivating or tending to the sprouts of righteousness or propriety in ourselves. As the sprouts of righteousness are tangled, and discerning our natural inclinations towards good from selfish or perverse desires is difficult. How can we know what righteousness or morality is? However, if Zhuangzi was actively using a gardening or farming metaphor in a possitive way, that might possibly undermine the above interpretation. Or potentially suggest that the issues wasn't with what Menzi wanted to do, but rather that his attempt wasn't in harmony with the greater Dao of the universe, and the Dao inside us. And that the first step would be the suppression of harmful/distracting preferences and desires that might obscure the truth, and morality, rather than trying to take the elements of good we instinctively realize and working to generalize them. Which is closer in some ways to a buddhist perspective. Or to use a pre-buddhist source, would be an interpretation closer to what I read in some translations of the Huananzi. On that topic, do you consider the Huananzi to be a good Daoist text? Or do you think it might be too influenced by Confucianism. I found it to have some interesting insights about the I Ching, and how to synsergize it under a more Daoist perspective derived from the Zhuangzhi.
Subscribed. Recommend you to buy a better mic. A decent Shure is not that expensive. The quality of your voice is quite bad, there is a reverb perhaps from the walls behind you and and there is a strong noise also.
Very good, thanks
I'm a taoist practitioner, i'll be following you, thanks, there is always something new to learn.
What I want to know about Daoism is that why do Daoist texts sound anti-wealth? Yet at the same time, Chinese worship the god of money and pay homage. Why is that?
This is actually a great question. In short, there are two main reasons. First, as you will start to see from the Zhuangzi episode, Taoist tradition has different branches and approaches; each has its own set of variances. There are Zhuangzi, Liezi, Yangzhu etc on the one side who adore more a hermit style of self cultivation (and texts from this tradition generally sound more anti-wealth), while you can also see Huang-Lao school taking on a more worldly engagement who cultivate themselves through governing a state like a body, as well as Fan Li, who was an extraordinary cultivator, a successful minister, and a legendary businessman at Pre-Qin era. Those directions in cultivation created a culture ground for worldly engagement. Taoist religions later on also inherited those variations, which will be clear as we move to the episodes on Taoist religion. Second, there are stages to Taoist pursuit. Those "anti-wealth" passages speaks directly to the ultimate goal: transcending our fundamental existence. Hence from this perspective, wealth, power, anything from human society, and even the natural world, are fundamentally illusional. Attachment to those things is therefore discouraged. However, there is also elemental stage. Transcendence is valued because Taoism thinks this state allows infinite possibility. But an expansion of current possibility is also valued. For most people, being better off economically generally opens up possibilities. So at this kind of stage, Taoism is not anti-wealth. When they can better take care of themselves, their possibility increases, which is already something good.
