I love this idea of talking through math strategies. Seems to really help with that Growth Mindset! When you write down their solution strategies; are you writing it on board OR typing it on board or using a Tech like Voice Dictation to document it on smart board/etc? Seems like I'd get tripped up trying to write their solution using my hand writing on the board.

This is an awesome explanation of how to use this, we are supposed to use these activities in my third grade class and I always struggle getting them to dig deeper.

I also shared this with my students last year (5/6 class). I’m going to share it with my grade6 this year as I really loved doing this.

I like to get my board ready for the next day before I leave each afternoon. I drive about 30 minutes to school and I would hate to come in late with nothing posted. I usually arrive early but then I can use that time to make copies and quickly go through the outline of my lesson for the day.

I really liked the discussion at 6:13! He added 1 but really there are 3 x-1's because it's being multiplied. So he just needed to add 3 ones to the right, super close! Thanks so much for this example of number talks!

Love this!! I'm wanting to be a math teacher as well!! Finishing up my undergraduate and then going to start a career changer program that our state offers (a training then one year of shadowing an existing teacher). It was working with middle school students in the Americorp program called City Year that sold me on the career. So looking forward to it!! Always so nice to see videos like this and yours was really descriptive!!
