RTS games will never die. Just because there isn't widespread casual appeal doesn't mean that there isn't money to be made, and so long as there's money to be made, RTS games will continue to be made. For that matter, part of why Starcraft absolutely dominated the RTS genre was BECAUSE it has such a high skill ceiling. Compared to other games at the time, Starcraft was faster paced with a heavier emphasis on unit micro. Not to mention also having to memorize multiple different race matchups. Starcraft was the original esport, and had significant cultural sway at its time. That's not to say that casuals should be entirely ignored. Obviously a huge reason why Starcraft was such a juggernaut of its time was because casuals played it. I think the real issue with Starcraft's future is what even makes it stand out anymore. It used to be pretty clear in that it was a cutthroat universe with constant betrayals and backroom politics. It tricks you by making you think that racial lines are what divides you from your enemies, only for Mengsk to screw you over after New Gettysberg. SC2 utterly gutted the franchise's identity. The new models, while definitely more presentable in the context of an esport, lighten up the graphical tone set by the first game. The story is sappy and predictable with nothing of particular import ever occuring in most missions. The entire Protoss race was completely redesigned for the worse. They ditched the mysteriousness of the first game and just made them gaudy pricks. Compare a Zealot or High Templar of SC1 to one of SC2 and you'll see what I mean. Not to mention the addition of cartoonishly specific factions within races and the flanderization of previously nuanced factions from the previous game. The Umojan Protectorate, the Primal Zerg, the Tal'Darim, the Ihan-Ri, etc.
