To me, this is Kanye’s essentialist personality manifest. The sparsity of elements. The lack of a fundamental rhythmic section for most of the instrumental. The slight timing variations of the sample. He’s attempting to give you a full song’s worth of ideas with less than a handful of ideas. Man’s making the cookie stretch to a degree I’ve never heard before in hiphop. He’s made minimal productions before, but this is barebones. Each sound is full and well thought regarding what it’s meant to convey at each second. Listen closely to the flute sample early in the track. Notice how the colour of the gating (contrast between no sound and sound) shifts. One second, it spawns in without a trace of its entrance. The next instance, it a pronounced transient. Same idea for how the sounds fade out and their reverb tails. This is no basic midi programming. This is microbiology level attention to detail. All while under the constraints of a minimalist art palate. i wish they fully fleshed out the lyrics
