Did you discharge the refrigerant for the ac before removing the engine? Or were you able to leave all the lines connected and push them out of the way?
@@solo25fly ac was discharged you need to undo the lines to the condenser before you remove the front core support, I mention it in the video 👍
No thanks, that is not a job for me. More power to the ones that can
For what it’s worth it can be done even if your slightly handicapped, the day before I did this I fell down the stairs outside and wrecked my back, neck, and ribs 😂 Also minimal tools required. Can take this whole thing apart with a 10mm, 13mm, t20, and a Philips screwdriver. But I hear ya. Sh*t can be intimidating.
How long did it take u to do it?
Started in the evening had it out before lunch next day and I take a LOT of LONG breaks 😂
I've had two older Explorers and this one issue of changing the water pump has discouraged me from buying any newer models of Explorer or any Ford for that matter that has a timing chain driven water pump. In the older Explorers changing the water pump was pretty easy. You definitely didn't have to take apart half the engine to do so. The design of these engines are ridiculously bad.
Yea but the older explorers had timing chain guide failures that required you to remove the engine due to the one chain being on the back of the cylinder head. I’ve owned multiple and loved each one of them, my point I’m trying to make is don’t let the water pump issue shy you away from an otherwise great vehicle and a failing water pump isn’t always a guarantee. If you would’ve heard about the older explorer chain issues would that have pushed you away from purchasing those? Because it sounds like they where good vehicles for you, same as the newer explorers would be, don’t let the internet scare ya, you’ll always see the small amount of failures and complaints from people, but you’ll never see the thousands of happy owners of these vehicles
@@dom_not_torretotedesco5707 I hear ya and I knew about the timing chains in the older Explorers but I never had to change my timing chain in either of my Explorers. In my first Explorer the engine blew before the timing chain did. I just think to design and engine with a part that is common to fail so hard to repair is not good.
Ive watched a few how-tos but this answered everything i needed in my mechanic brain, other than "is that back screw really necessary when i put it back together?" 🤣
@@tommyhuffman8781 😂😂
Is this worth fixing ?
I've watched your video and another one that shows top engine removal.. Do you have any idea of a bracket that says "to engine with a arrow" 2 bolts.. thats somewhere on the back..
Could it be the rear engine mount bracket?
@@RiggsCo no clue i've looked and can't find this thing.. if you don't mind i'll post a link to my google drive of the image.. might end up in your spam or something on yt..
Sorry for all the comments.. just watched like 20 more video's and finally seen it..its right beside the catalytic converter.. Mine was just missing, hence why i could not find the stupid thing.. .. Thanks so much for the video and taking time to reply to help out..
So why would we buy a Ford of any kind after seeing what is displayed in this video for changing a water pump which should have been designed outside of the engine in the first place?
@@thatgregguy honestly it’s a somewhat common design to see nowadays. There’s other manufacturers making timing chain driven pumps. That said, these explorers aren’t terrible rigs. This one wasn’t ours but my gf has a ‘15 sport and it’s been a reliable truck. I have another customer who has a ‘13 with over 300,000 miles on it. I have done his pump probably three times though 😂
@ it’s shit anyway you slice it. I had no idea this garbage was being done or I would not have bought my 2017 Explorer. Foolishness!😡
I'm glad I had this video for help. Saved me a lot of time for my first 5.0 r&r
@@blakeveit2061 hell yeah 💪 thanks for watching!
Yes man ♂️
Probably wont respond because of old video but what you use for engine mounts to hoist the engine out?
@@christianleibfried329 yeah it’s been awhile but if I remember correctly I used a chain and a couple bolts into the exhaust & intake sides of the head
Can't see anything. Bad video.
@@jerrypruitt7432 thanks it’s captioned in braille for the blind 😂
Do you think this will work with the 2.5L engine? The engine is a little wider, I only have about 1 inch on the passenger side between the engine and the frame rail. Or do you think I'd have to take the transmission out the bottom and then pull the engine out the top?
Been charged $3500 today. Too much for me
Commentary is goldddd 😂
Do not install yourself unless you want to be miserable guys, he makes it look way easier than it actually is😂
@@thatvibemusic it’s not that bad! But I’ll take the compliment 😂🤝
It was way easy for me after watching this video! Thanks for the video!! While all apart I changed the plugs and cleaned up everything and changed the thermostat!!
just had to go from a 05 tahoe to a 16 ford explorer, so much more work just to take the water pump out
Just booked this job in at the garage. As of October 2024, Price for waterpump, gaskets and install is $2138 - We have gone for timing chain replacement too and bill has come to $2900 all in. - Warranty are only covering $1700 though.
@@raljix1566 find a local mechanic friend like me. I did this for $600 labor.
Changed mine at home along with the oil pump. Took a couple of days. Not that bad honestly.
Your very lucky a warranty covered some of the cost. This just happened to my 2016 with an external leak, some reprieve, but still $3,000 with my mechanic $5-6,000 with Ford dealership. Terrible design on a car and should be a recall as it was with Ford Canada.
@@Barbara-r6v6cthere was a recall in Canada for this? 🤔 The problem is so outrageous there should be a class action lawsuit over this. It’s bullshit!
My kia rio 2006, has been giving me trans issues lately. Some u start it up and it drives normal, sometimes u start it up press accelerator, engine revs but no movement. U need to turn it off and back on before u get movement. When this happens and u shift to reverse or drive there is a huge jolt and clunk sound.
@@kaytube5645 have it scanned. I’m betting there’s some line pressure codes in there. Pump is probably going bad in the trans. Likely will need a rebuild/replacement.
@@RiggsCo yeah i got a P0745 code. Pressure control solenoid valve. It happened again today, i got on a hilly environment with speed rumps, after crossing the first speed rump and stepping on gas pedal, car revved but did not accelerate , had to shift to neutral and back to drive before i got movement.
@@kaytube5645 yeah I’d check fluid level (warm at idle in park) and condition first before condemning the transmission. But likely need a replacement.
What was the problem causing it to not move in gear..I have a 2020 kia rio and a mechanic says it's a bad torque converter and the transmission needs a rebuild..why would both be bad 🤷♂️
@ when a converter fails they tend to take out the pump in the trans
Awesome thank you day hello to the dudes
Do you think adding a very thin layer of rtv where the gasket sits will make the pump seal last longer?
@@arnoldm889 no I wouldn’t add any rtv to that gasket
Thanks I got one to do like that and I'm a mechanic I'm trying to figure a way to do it but I take the dash out glad I seen your video that helped me out a lot thanks
👀👀👌🏽😎🏁🏁🏁
I have the chain back in place with pin pulled from tensioner, a slight jiggle in chain at one side of crank gear. will oil pressure pump the tensioner a little tighter ?
So you can do a 2016 pretty much the same way?
@@willbrian2001 yeah I’d assume pretty similar. Grille removal is probably a little different.
What ended up failing on the engine?
@@gabesanders1119 buddy just sent me a video of it knocking really bad and then dropped the truck off with the replacement engine in the back so I didn’t diagnose it. If I had to guess probably rod bearing failure. Didn’t take the core apart to verify company he bought the engine from wanted the core back complete.
Step 1. Remove horn relay.
@@jpl57210 😂😂😂
I have a 18 5.0 (40k miles) and I am having intermittent misfire on startup and it wants to die after warmed up at stops. Dealer said he didn't see anything wrong with engine and it must be my tune. Tuner says check all vac lines which I have done and I can't find any leaks. Seems to run fine under load above 800 rpm and definately on highway. It is only at a stop when in gear or after warm up in idle at low rpm Do you think it could be my injectors?
@@NXCoyoteF150 hard to say without diagnosing in person obviously but did you have data logs you sent the tuner? Fuel trims lean at idle? Did you smoke test for vac leaks or just visual inspection? Has the manifold been off recently? This customer replaced his manifold (for whatever reason) after this repair himself at home and he rolled over the intake gasket on cylinder 8 and had a similar issue but also a noticeable misfire.
Part number?
😂😂😂😂😂😂t
Hey not sure if youre still on this but i did this job too but when i started it i got a code and noise because the “exhaust cam is over retarded.” By any chance is there any resetting that needs to he done computer wise or soemthing? The engine i got shouldve been good
@@pizzahut6537 first thing I’d check is all the wiring. Posssible you missed a plug somewhere. I’d start by checking on the valve cover the cam position sensor is up there IIRC
Very informative video. Thank you
I replaced the engine for a new 2.4L everything is bolted back together but I have a no crank issue. Does the ECU need to be reprogrammed?
@@notworthit1096 nope computer won’t care as long as it’s the same as what you pulled out. Check your wiring. Something isn’t plugged in or a ground isn’t bolted down. 👌
@@RiggsCo i noticed that the shift leveler is not lighting up white when ever a gear is selected. It’s not going into any gear. So im guessing thats my no crank issue. Bell housing ground good, head ground good, chasis ground under the fuse box area good, any other ground im missing? Any ideas why the trans would act up like that. I have an electro mechanic coming Monday/Tuesday to take a look at it.
@@RiggsCo also when ever i do try to crank it even do it doesn’t the dash goes out.
Just 30 seconds in and already laughing. I have to laugh. I got to replace that shit and force to pay to get it fix as i dont have tool, space, body strength or flexibility to be able to do this on my own. This is so frustrating but yes Ford got me saying B.F.P.S lol 😂 i love my explorer but still makes me wanna *smfh* 😰
Thanks for watching anyway! My girlfriend also LOVES hers… I wish she didn’t. LOL 😂 but they are very nice rides aside from a little fix here and there.
@@RiggsCo lmaoooo ty so much for showing us what it takes! And making the video, Very much appreciated. I was able to understand where and what it was and how hard it is to replace it. Ty for another extra laugh ❤️😜
I apologize but you seem to know more about this then what I can find on the Internet. I had my actuator replaced about a week ago. After spending almost 600 dollars 🤬 now my defrost isn't blowing. I am taking it back today. I just wanted to see if you can at least keep it real with me. After fixing the blend door actuator, shouldn't this issue been fix ? Or can there be a different actuator that they missed and didn't check and replaced ??..... I apologize to bother you with this. If your not sure, I understand . I figure it wouldnt hurt to ask. I feel like they didn't do a good job, looking at everything. My AC is blowing better but nothing is blowing out of the front defrost vents. Tyvm
@@SuperLallypop no worries! They likely mis-aligned the actuator, didn’t set its position correctly with a position re-learn, or it’s bad out of the box (I’ve done two others that went bad again within a couple days of install it’s just a real shit part) I’m sure they’ll take care of you! Should be at least a 1 year warranty on that part. It is only one actuator that controls all “modes” (from defrost to floor vents) aptly named the “mode door actuator” so they definitely shouldn’t try selling you another actuator. There’s only three jobs three actuators are responsible for (unless you have dual zone climate then you have two temp doors) but that’d be one mode door, one recirculation door, and one (or two) temp doors.
